:P ah, the joys of being stuck in the twilight zone... Yet another reason I don't do the S/R thing... just asking to push my weak sanity over the edge.

Why not get it through work? The easiest abilities to get are the ones tied to dating and work. There are only so many events that can pop up at work, unlike reloading a day where just about any event can show its ugly face. (Oh look.... Marvin's late for practice again  )

That's great stuff. Do you think you could add the likability gains (ie +.66) to these reference sheets? I've only recorded ups and downs so far.

Oh yeah, forgot to thank you for the great information about the heart increases. It'll help me plan things out a little better. Good to know I won't have to use 23 turns to seal the deal...

On a separate note, why do you want Gd Small Ball so badly? Its really only good for the weakest of hitters; and on top of that, only when you're simming. Or maybe you're like me and you have to make a success player with every freakin' ability known to man.

MrSims-

Well, couple of reasons. I defintely do like having guys with many abilites. I'll even sacrifice the main attributes (pwr, con, fld, etc.) as those can be improved on steadily in practice.

Another thing to help you with Becky, for now or for the future. I generally don't even call her until xmas of yr. 3. If you call her after a long absence, she'll always dump your sorry ass, but if you wait to call her on xmas (nobody wants to be single during the holidays), she invites you over and you get 1 heart, and bam, you're back in the game. So you can save time in yrs. 1 and 2 and put off getting Intim. until spring of yr. 3. all the other events where she likes you less during this time, who cares? you can't get negative hearts and saves alot of worry about fate cards.

So the pattern is this:

Y2 Xmas w/ Annie for surprise bag, which i turn into scrts of httg.
Y2 Valentine w/ Sarah for secrets of defense (just challenge, already documented)

Y3 xmas with whomever you want to end up with. if you don't care, i go annie for the surprise bag, another scrts of httg
Y3 Valentine w/ annie for another scrts httg.

Immediately start dating Becky after Y3 Valentines (or who you want to end up with), and you're good to go. By not having to date in yr. 1 or 2, I have most abilities and ranks i want by then and can concentrate on dating every other week. *Sometimes, you may have to throw in a date right before valentines day with becky but after xmas, to tide her over so you can whore yourself out for scrts of httg, but usually i'm ok just going back to becky immediately after valentines.

and I want smll ball for my no. 2 hitter. I'm making an all CAP team and plan on simming most of it, so just trying to make guys to fit the mold at every spot in the lineup.

I was just going to get it in practice during the season, with the help of Tadahito Iguchi, the only player with Gd Small Ball, but it can't be learned. Neither can "walk off hitter" nor "BL Hitter" nor "Refined". So if you want those, you have to get them in success mode.

As for getting small ball, did you use Marvin card when the Boss asks "another day, another dollar"? or when a customer comes in complaining about hot coffee? I'm close to giving up and my girlfriend is even closer to breaking up with me.

Sorry for the long post. my high school english teacher would be sorely disappointed with my lack of conciseness. And the fact that i'm still playing video games.

EDIT: I forgot, on occasion, calling Becky on Y3 Xmas will only give you a .67 heart boost (may be tied to ladies man rating, pr sense, etc, not sure).

You can either Sv/Rld before Xmas to get the full heart boost, or just date her again on Valentine's (NOT the weeks btw, though) to get her 1.33 hearts, and then you can start calling her for regular dates. 1 full heart seems to be the minumum threshold of when she will still accept your phone calls.

Alright, so does that mean Intimidator could possibly be unlearnable? This would stop some of these guys from posting about "Uz learz skilz 4 me k?"

Use a Marvin card on "Another day, another dollar" or if you're delivering pizzas on "Deliver those pizzas while they're warm" (or something like that - basically anytime you can challenge for a wage increase). Just save right before you work; it shouldn't take that long, although I don't think its been determined if luck has any bearing on gaining abilities. That being said, I've always had excellent luck and it's never taken me longer then 30 minutes (and that's uncommon).

Thanks for all the dating info, unfortunately I'm at Yr 3, Mar so I'm unable to take advantage of some things. I actually almost lost Becky. I dated her for the first time at Christmas and must've gotten the .66 heart because I tried to date her after that and she dumped me! But I reloaded, thinking she surely wouldn't dump me on Valentine's and I got the likeability bumped up enough to put me back in business. Now after reading your post everything makes sense.

Appreciate all the info, you'll do nicely on these forums!

Should I conclude that only the abilities able to be gotten from the success mode ability boost screen can be learned? i.e. none of the secrets of whatever exclusive abilities.

Wow, I missed that one. I would think that if an ability is on the list when selecting an ability to learn that it would be obtainable.

Good point mrsims.

Maybe they just take A LOT longer. Or maybe something where it needs to be a group with TWO people who know the ability and one without it.

Regarding learnable tech/abilities in season mode...

I was just going by what techniques are available in practice during season mode. When you choose a player to learn a technique, a separate list of available abilities comes up, and BL HTTR, REFINED, WALK-OFF are not there.

One might think only the abilites that can be bought might be listed, but INITIMIDATOR and RALLY are both there, which makes it confusing and somewhat arbitrary.

I've tried putting two players, one already w/BL HTTR in practice and group them to see it if the other one can now learn, but doesn't work either. So it would seem those 3 are most important to get as the others can be obtained in Season mode practice.

Actually, I'm somewhat surprised more of you guys didn't see that. You all seem very familiar with the game, so it makes me think that I am actually missing something. For instance, the "UZ skillz, learz" whatever, i have no idea what that is.

I hope i'm not and haven't been giving out amateur, uninformed advice here...

Meanwhile, the quest for small ball continues...

ah. pkwgn you have embarrassed me ...

once again you are correct. I have never noticed that for two reasons:
1. I rarely practice for technique - prefer to get all A's first
2. If I do, I'm obsessed with getting an Intimidator.

I have no idea what the Uz learnz whatever is. I think he's mocking us.

On some other forums I troll, the comments come a lot more in leetspeak rather than in real english... or broken english at best. I'm surprised it hasn't infiltrated this forum yet

I understand why walkoff/bl hitter isn't a learnable ability, but intimidator seems to be giving everyone the pits... though I've created a guy w/ it and artificially gave him 10 years exp in the majors, still isn't working... i still say my wii makes bad dice rolls.

I have a different take on Becky so I thought I'd chime in:

If you reach 9 hearts with any of the girls your likability won't drop no matter how long you put off dating. Also if I'm going to spend turns dating, I'd rather do it before getting the Champion Ring than after, when training becomes more efficient. Intensified Strength Training (via Bookworm Lv4) is also a factor here; You probably won't get that till the latter half of Year 2 using the Mind Training Necklace route.

So, I think you're better off dating in Year 2 and spending most of Year 3 training than the other way around. Plus you usually have 1 or 2 hearts filled before the Year 2 Xmas from listening to Becky's Love woes (Oct Year 2) and getting her number (Nov Year 2) - if you put off dating till they go back to zero you're basically wasting turns for the lost likability. Thus in dating Becky I usually take advantage of the Year 2 Xmas and Valentines, and also the turns immediately before the Year 2 games (reason explained here) to get married and get her affection up to 8-9 hearts. Year 3 Xmas is a must for the Becky ending, and that should fill out the rest of the hearts.

After that I forget about Becky and spend all my turns training.

Interesting take on it...Definitely advantages to your method, including efficiency of the hearts.

I think in the end, it boils down to what kind of player you want. If you want guys with tons of abilities, but are okay with B's and C's all around (I'll end the Y3 with about 300 exp. points in each category that i don't use to keep purposely keep their lvls down, so you can end up with a much higher player, if you wish) as you know it can be improved steadily over season mode, then waiting until Y3 i think may help as you get one more Secrets of Httg (Y2 Xmas w/ Annie) as well as Scrts of Defense (Y2 Val w/ Sara...only important for OF's though as Spdr Ctch can only be gotten from the Defense book)

In addition, waiting until Y3, I've been using gambling tickets (I've found you don't need a ring really) after each practice or random event that gives me points so it's not so important to max out exp. gained from each practice. By the way, in this method I've found I actually attempt to start with guys who have poor sense...shoot, maybe i'll try to post some sorta guide later (but i'm pretty sure something very similar is already up here and i just haven't come across it. Everyone seems to be very familiar with the game.)

But if you don't Sv/Rld, then your way definitely might be more beneficial.
