Mid-September 2009 Update: Padres Preparing for Return to Postseason
In the time since the last update, the Padres have clinched both the NL West title and a 100-win season. They have returned to full health with the return of Victor Martinez, whose impact on the team's lineup is already evident. Martinez's .617 slugging percentage is good for second on the team, behind only Jack Cust. If he would have avoided injury, he'd potentially have accumulated 50 home runs already. The team's rotation is as dominant as ever, although Greg Maddux and Chris Young have been struggling recently. The playoff rotation has not been determined yet, and it will likely be a debate between Chris Young, Anibal Sanchez, and Phil Hughes for the fourth spot. Joba Chamberlain has secured the closer spot from Clay Hensley thanks to his recent save streak. The New York Mets will likely not surpass the Padres for the best record in the NL due to San Diego's recent surge. The Padres now have a 6-game advantage with 12 to play, so they could potentially benefit from resting a few players and giving younger players opportunities. It's a bit bittersweet that the best regular season in franchise history is coming to a close, but there is still so much more for the Friars to accomplish.

September 30, 2009: Padres Conclude Greatest Regular Season with 107-55 Record
The Padres closed their 2009 campaign in a disappointing shootout loss at Coors Field. Greg Maddux could not finish on a great note as he allowed 5 runs in 5 innings. Maddux has been quite poor following his return, which is concerning for a Padres team that relies so heavily on starting pitching. Although they trailed 5-2 after the second, the Padres roared back to score five runs of three home runs from Kevin Kouzmanoff, Adrian Gonzalez, and Khalil Greene. The Friars failed to hold the lead, giving up clutch hits to Todd Helton and Garrett Atkins. Despite trailing 8-6, the Padres rallied to tie the game thanks to some stellar baserunning from Aaron Albion. Albion scored on a rundown after a grounder to second, showcasing his prime strength. The rest of the team could not build off this momentum as Andrew Brown gave up a walk-off home run to Troy Tulowitzki. It was a disappointing end to a tremendous season, but the Padres will now turn their focus to the postseason, where they will match up against the Atlanta Braves. Although they will be heavily favored, there are some concerns with a pitching staff that has been struggling in the last week or so. Mark Teixiera awaits, so the pitching staff will have to get back on track to avoid an early exit.

2009 Season Recap: Padres Among Greatest Regular Season Teams in League History
While most expected the Padres to be highly competitive in 2009 thanks to an aggressive offseason, they did not project them to shatter records on the way to their first NL West crown in three seasons. It is hard to think of any offseason moves that didn't work out. Orlando Hudson, John Lackey, and Victor Martinez were all directly responsible for the team's success. It is also hard to think of any player who regressed from 2008 as most players either replicated or improved upon their 2008 numbers. With no regression and top-tier reinforcements, it was clear that the Padres were bound for success. They still have work to be done in the postseason, and their potential road to a World Series will not be a walk in the park. They will first face the Atlanta Braves, whom they defeated 5 times in 8 contests during the regular season. However, Mark Teixiera haunted Padres pitching with several key home runs in those eight matchups, so he will be a key factor in the series's outcome. The Padres have decided to go with Jake Peavy, John Lackey, Greg Maddux, Anibal Sanchez, and Chris Young (if necessary) in that order for their rotation. This rotation is the best in the playoff field on paper, but there are some potential concerns with Greg Maddux's regression since his elbow injury in July. To combat this and additional fatigue, Bud Black expects to only throw starters between 5-7 innings, leaving the rest to a bullpen anchored by September's pitcher of the month Joba Chamberlain and dependable setup ace Cla Meredith. San Diego has the pieces for a title run in place, but they must perform how they did in the regular season to avoid a disappointing October.

2009 NLDS Preview: Padres and Braves Meet in 1998 NLCS Rematch

Pitching Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

The Padres maintain a clear advantage in the pitching battle with arguably three top-5 Cy Young finishers. Tom Glavine was the only Braves pitcher under an ERA of 4, but Tim Lincecum has given the Padres some issues in the past. Atlanta also faced some bullpen woes as they do not necessarily have a reliable closer. The Padres, in contrast, have the benefit of Joba Chamberlain. The young closer did not allow a single run in 14 appearances in September, winning pitcher of the month. If all remains steady, the Padres should have the clear pitching edge.
Advantage: Padres

Hitting Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

The Padres are also expected to have a bit of an edge here, but it is not as strong as their pitching edge. The Braves scored over 180 more runs than San Diego in the regular season. The Padres had issues putting runners on base with a league-low team OBP. San Diego's offense has been notoriously streaky in the past two seasons, so they will need to remain consistent in October. Adrian Gonzalez may be the X-factor in this series since he went through a decent amount of cold/hot streaks in the regular season. If Mark Teixiera terrorizes Padres pitching as he did in the regular season, it could end up as a highly-contested series. Still, the powerful Padres offense should be able to have an easier time against Braves pitching than the Braves will against theirs.
Advantage: Padres

Series Prediction: Padres over Braves in 4.

2009 NLDS Game 1: Padres Take 1-0 Series Lead
The Padres made their long-awaited return to the postseason to a sold-out Petco Park. Jake Peavy and Tim Hudson both looked to build off their postseason success, and they were soon locked in a pitcher's duel. Brian McCann and Victor Martinez were thrust into the spotlight early once they both threw runners out at second. McCann's throw was the most impressive as he caught the league's leading base stealer in Orlando Hudson. The game was scoreless until the fifth when Yunel Escobar singled. The Padres refused to be disheartened and tied the score in the sixth. Orlando Hudson had hits in each of his first three at-bats, but his third was by far the most important. Hudson tripled into the right-field gap and was driven in by a V-Mart single. With the game tied, the Padres seemed to take the momentum away from the underdogs. Immediately after the 7th-inning stretch, Jack Cust homered to straightaway center, causing Petco Park to erupt. The Friars then turned to Rudy Seanez, Cla Meredith, and Joba Chamberlain to finish the job. Chamberlain allowed a leadoff double to Mark Teixeira. Fortunately, he retired the next three batters to keep his hot streak alive. The Padres claimed a deserved 1-0 lead in the series while Atlanta rues a missed opportunity.

2009 NLDS Game 2: Padres Take Commanding Lead with Commanding Win
The San Diego Padres are one win from reaching the NLCS after a 6-2 victory over Atlanta. Although they only won by 4 runs, the game was never in doubt. The Padres struck for three runs in the first inning, powered by a 2-run Jack Cust double. Cust is making the clearest case for series MVP with two home runs and five RBI in just two games thus far. Cust drove in four this game with another home run in the second inning. Victor Martinez has also been a strong performer as he hit a solo home run to extend the cushion. As expected though, San Diego's pitching has shined. The staff has given up only three runs in two games, with the bullpen only allowing one run. While Mark Texieria has not been silenced, he has been minimized to have less of an impact. Atlanta's decision to star Jeff Bannister has been heavily criticized as Tom Glavine or Tim Lincecum would have given them a better chance to even the series. Instead, they will have to win three in a row against the league's best team.

2009 NLDS Game 3: Padres Make Quick Work of Braves for a Sweep- Advance to NLCS for First Time Since 1998
Image
The San Diego Padres have advanced to the National League Championship Series via a quick sweep. The Atlanta Braves barely led in this series- they were ahead for only one inning by one run. Jack Cust will now be Braves fans' least favorite player thanks to his three home runs in the series. He hit a two-run blast in the first inning today, but it wasn't the winning hit this time. The Braves scored twice off Greg Maddux in the second, causing some concern for Maddux's abilities. Luckily, Maddux settled down to only allow just those two runs in 5.2 innings. It was Kevin Kouzmanoff's turn to play the hero as he drove in the two winning runs with a double to the deepest part of the ballpark. Victor Martinez had a similar hit to make it 5-2, which was an insurmountable lead against this Padres bullpen. With two outs in the ninth, Brian McCann grounded out to Orlando Hudson, and the celebrations began at Petco Park. The Padres will now face the fellow 100-win New York Mets in what could be a classic series.

2009 NLCS Preview: Two 100-Win Teams Meet in Highly-Anticipated Series

Pitching Comparison:

Although the Padres' starting rotation is statistically superior, Mets starting pitching has given San Diego's offense difficulties in the past. The Padres have yet to face Mark Buehrle and Justin Verlander, but Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey have good career numbers against San Diego. In the regular season, the Mets won five of six matchups, and their pitching staff was a major reason for it. The key to shutting down San Diego's offense is to keep the ball in the park as the Padres struggle to get on base. Luckily for New York, this is one of their strongsuits, so they could claim an advantage there. San Diego is well-rested after a quick sweep of the Braves. No pitcher threw more than seven innings, so fatigue will likely not be an issue for the Padres' staff. Jake Peavy is likely the Cy Young winner, so he will intimidate Mets hitters. The key could be Greg Maddux, who has been a bit shaky since his elbow injury in July. If Maddux can have one final postseason run left in him, the Padres will claim the overall pitching edge. Overall though, the teams' pitching units are close to even.
Advantage: Padres

Batting Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
ImageImage

While the Padres hit way more home runs than the Mets in the regular season, the Mets scored almost 300 more runs. New York was 67 runs shy of the 1931 New York Yankees' record for most runs in a season. They were highly-aggressive in both the offseason and regular season, building a power-hitting trio of Adam Dunn, Carlos Delgado, and Frank Thomas. They are also well-versed on the basepaths thanks to Luis Castillo, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran The Mets are as close to an all-around team as it gets, which will certainly give the Padres issues at some point. As stated in the NLDS, Adrian Gonzalez may be San Diego's X-factor. Gonzalez was quiet in the NLDS without a single hit, but the Padres will need their franchise cornerstone to perform well to win the series.
Advantage: Mets

Prediction: Mets in 7

2009 NLCS Game 1: Padres Shut Down Mets in Thriller
The highly-anticipated meeting between two 100-win National League teams is finally here, and it did not disappoint. Tonight's game belonged to Justin Verlander and Jake Peavy. It was clear from the outset that the matchup would be a pitcher's duel as Peavy only allowed 1 hit through four innings, while Verlander allowed three in that span. In fact, it was Jake Peavy who sparked the only offense in the game with a two-out double in the fifth. With Peavy on second, Orlando Hudson singled to left to give San Diego the first lead of the series. Despite limiting his pitchers to 6 or 7 innings in the NLDS, Bud Black decided to roll with Peavy until the ninth. The decision paid off as Peavy finished the game with 11 strikeouts. Some even criticized Black for pulling him too early after he allowed a 1-out hit in the ninth. Black turned to lights-out closer Joba Chamberlain, but he gave up two consecutive hits to load the bases. Carlos Beltran and Adam Dunn needed just a base hit, or even a sacrifice, to tie or take the lead. Instead, Chamberlain reared down and struck out both. Adam Dunn finished a horrific night with four strikeouts in four at-bats, which drew the New York media's ire. San Diego will be thrilled to have a 1-0 lead, but they cannot continue to score only once and expect to win this series.

2009 NLCS Game 2: Padres Score Five in the First, Take 2-0 Series Lead
The Padres responded to scoring only one run in Game 1 by scoring five in Game 2, all of which came in the first inning. Mike Pelfrey has pitched well against the Padres in the past, but tonight was a much-needed exception. Adrian Gonzalez had his anticipated breakthrough with a 2-run double with no outs. After Cust followed with a single, Khalil Greene stepped to the plate and crushed a 3-run home run to left field. The Padres led by five without even recording an out. This took all the pressure of John Lackey, who finished the night with one earned run in six innings. Adam Dunn broke an 0-5 slump with a solo home run, but this was meaningless in the grand scheme of the game. The Mets only mustered two runs tonight, pushing their average to a pitiful 1-per game this series. It has been a shocking display of ineptitude from a team that scored 1,000 runs in the regular season. The Mets will now have to hope that traveling to New York will end their offensive woes, but the fanbase is not too optimistic.

2009 NLDS Game 3: Mets Make it a Series
The Mets shut out the Padres for their first win of the series. Johan Santana was absolutely dominant, allowing only four hits on the night. This was despite him striking out only two batters, meaning he kept the ball on the ground. His counterpart, Greg Maddux, was also strong for as long as he could pitch, allowing only one run on a Chavez single. However, Maddux was forced to leave the game after the fifth inning due to an elbow injury. Luckily, test results did not indicate any significant injury, so Maddux can rest for the remainder of the series. It will be interesting to see how Bud Black handles the 43-year-old's injury situation as it is a re-aggravation. If Maddux cannot finish the remainder of the playoffs, it will be a blow to the league's best rotation. Anibal Sanchez will make his first-ever postseason start tomorrow night, hoping to make his mentor proud. He will face Mark Buehrle, a much-more experienced pitcher, so one can assume that the pressure now lies with the road team. This game was also the first road game of San Diego's postseason, so that may have been a contributing factor to the loss. Either way, the Mets brought themselves back in the series with this victory.

2009 NLCS Game 4: Padres One Win Away From Fall Classic
The San Diego Padres are a win away from their first trip to the World Series since 1998. They did so in thrilling fashion with an offensive explosion in the eighth. The game did not start well as Adam Dunn homered for the second time in this series, which would not be the last. Dunn hit three solo home runs, accounting for all of New York's offense tonight. Mark Buehrle was as good as expected, but New York may have left him in for too long. Prior to the eighth, Buehrle allowed just two runs on doubles from Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff. The game was tied until the eighth, where Adrian Gonzalez and Khalil Greene each homered, giving the Padres a commanding 5-2 lead. It was a lead the Mets could not recover from, although Adam Dunn hit his third home run to make it 6-3. It was a shocking loss for the Mets, who seemed to be in control of the game until Buehrle fell apart in the eighth. If the Mets would have turned to their bullpen, they may have won it on an Adam Dunn walkoff. Instead, they trail 3-1 and are the verge of elimination.

2009 NLCS Game 5: Padres Win NL Pennant
Image
The San Diego Padres are headed to the Fall Classic after a 3-2 victory over the Mets! Although the Padres were technically the favorites in the series, it is surprising that they won the series so quickly. Most experts expected the series to go to either six or seven games, but the Padres won comfortably in five. This can be attributed to their starting pitching, which did not give up more than one run in any game this series. Tonight, the Friars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on home runs from Jason Kubel and Jack Cust. Kubel had a poor run of form prior to his clutch hit, so it was great to see him turn things around. The Mets picked up a run in the fifth, but the game was silent from there until the ninth when pinch-hitter Frank Thomas homered, giving Mets fans some hope. With two outs in the ninth, Joba Chamberlain stared down Eric Chavez. With an 0-2 count, Chamberlain threw a curveball to strike out Chavez and win the pennant. This will be the Friars' first World Series appearance since 1998, and they face the same team that swept them that year- the New York Yankees. The Yankees won the World Crown in 2008 and will be looking to once again win back-to-back titles. In contrast, the Padres will look to win their first title in their third try. Early betting odds favor the Padres, but this New York offense may prove to be better than the other one, which may be too difficult for the Padres to overcome. Still, with home-field advantage and momentum, the Padres have many reasons for optimism.

2009 World Series Recap: Four Wins From Glory

Pitching Comparison:

The Padres' pitching advantage is probably clearer against the Yankees than it was against the Mets or Braves. Veteran Mike Mussina was the team's best pitcher in the regular season, but his ERA was barely under 4.50. At 41 years old, it would be quite interesting to see Mussina face Greg Maddux in a World Series game, but the Yankees have not indicated what their rotation will look like. The Yankees' other pitchers nearly had 5-ERA seasons and struggled to prevent home runs, which benefits the Padres. Their bullpen was a bit better than their rotation, but they ironically gave up their two best relievers to the team they will face in the Series. Latroy Hawkins and Mariano Rivera are still a lights-out 8th and 9th duo, and they may overshadow Cla Meredith and Joba Chamberlain. Still, it is clear that the Padres have a major advantage in this category.

Advantage: Padres

Hitting Comparison:

New York's offense is high-powered enough to offset their pitching disadvantage. They have several players with A or B power ratings, including likely AL MVP Alex Rodriguez. They also feature former Padres Ricardo Alvarez and Tony Clark, the former of whom lambasted the Padres' front office to the media after failing to fulfill their promise to provide him regular playing time. Alvarez was slated to become the everyday second-baseman, but the Friars signed Orlando Hudson instead, only using Alvarez in pinch-hit situations. Alvarez will bat second for the Yankees, giving him plenty of opportunities to make the Padres regret their decision. The Yankees shocked the baseball world by trading legendary shortstop Derek Jeter for Torii Hunter, and Hunter has been heavily criticized ever seen he arrived in the Bronx. Because of that, he will also be hungry to prove himself. The Yankees nearly scored 1,000 runs this season, almost 300 runs than the Padres. While the Mets could say the same, the Bronx Bombers' raw power is superior to the Mets'. Due to this, the Yankees have the clear edge over the Padres at the plate. The question is whether it is enough to offset their pitching disadvantage.

Advantage: Yankees

Prediction: Padres in 7

2009 World Series Game 1: Yankees Steal Homefield
The New York Yankees ripped home-field advantage right from the Padres with a 2-1 win Friday night. Yankees hurler Ian Kennedy had the night of his life, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on six hits. His counterpart Jake Peavy was his usual self, allowing 1 run while striking out 9 and allowing only 5 hits. His only blemish came in the third inning when Johnny Damon drove in former Padre Tony Clark to score the first run of the series. Kennedy's only blemish came in the seventh when he allowed a tying single to Khalil Greene. The game was tied until the ninth, when Joba Chamberlain allowed a crushing home run to former teammate Alex Rodriguez. With Mariano Rivera waiting, most knew there would be no way for the Padres to recover. The loss was a shocking result since many expected an offensive battle. Instead, the Padres offense failed to live up to the occasion and left 3 runners in scoring position. If they drove in any of these runners, it could have been a much different result. A game 2 win is essential or else the Yankees will be heavily favored to become repeat champion.
