Cueto was 2 outs away from a CGSO but will settle for a 1-run CG instead. Hamilton hit a pinch-hit solo shot in the 9th inning to get rid of Texas' goose egg. After Crawford's lead-off triple in the 3rd, Upton smacked a home run of his own. The Rays still remain as the only above .500 team in the AL East as they continue their dominate season so far.

The Rays won in extra innings against the Athletics. Thanks to a plethora of Rays' bullpen arms, they managed to keep up the fight for 6 innings, giving up a combined 4 hits. Chavez went yard, for the A's, in the first inning; Crawford and Upton answered by scoring 1 for the Rays.

Also cool to see that players I traded: Hinske and Howell (A's), and Day (O's), having starting jobs on teams.

Cueto has been placed on the 10 day IL with forearm soreness. This doesn't bode well as Cueto has been cruising through the season with a 2.66 ERA so far. He will undergo more evaluations, but we do not want to jump to conclusions at the moment. Edison Volquez has been called up from AAA and will take his spot in the rotation.

The Rays fell to the Cubs from a walk-off 3-run home run from Soriano. The game was interesting from the Cubs' side as they pinch hit for their starter, Zambrano, in the 3rd inning but their bullpen held up. The Rays struck early in the game but that managed to be the only offense they could produce. Majewski gave up 1 run in the 8th which came from a Soriano solo shot - his 1st of the game. With 2 outs Miller came in and got the LHB Felix Pie. Unfortunately, the inning after Soriano cracked his 2nd home run of the game the inning after (with two strikes too); which promptly ended the game, being the walk-off. The back end of the Rays' pen seems to be the weak point for now, the coaching staff likes to use Dohmann in any situation which is why he hasn't been placed as either the set-up or closer for the team.

Some good news is that Cueto's evaluations turned out to be fine, it appears that it was just general soreness. He's expected to return about 18-20 days after his placement on the IL (activation around June 19th-21st).

The Rays have made a FA swap; they have effectively released Cory Wade and then signed Joba Chamberlain (both have a 400 salary). Joba was struggling with the Yankees sporting a 8.13 ERA so far. If he shows top tier talent in AAA, he may end up being part of the bullpen some time down the road.

Rays FA signings use/allowed - 1/2
Rays payroll/cap - 84720/84750

Draft day has completed, the MLB commissioner has allowed the Rays to exceed their salary cap to allowed them to sign their new draftees. They only signed 2 of their drafted players this year:
Yamato Koga - 3B
Zenzo Kawamura - SP/RP

Both were born in Japan and played against each other a few times during their little league travel ball games.

Rays payroll/cap - 85500/84750 (exceeded but allowed)

Prior to the game Chamberlain was called up from AAA and Orvella was sent down.

The Rays clobbered the Braves en route to a 10-2 victory. The heart of the Rays' order had themselves a home run each, Iwamura, Votto, and Upton. Wasting no time, Chamberlain made his Rays' debut throwing 2 IP with 1 ER. Even though his ERA is sky high, the coaching staff has confidence that he has lights out stuff when he finds his groove.

July 2nd, 2011

Matt Thornton was placed on the 60 day IL with elbow tightness. Already being placed on the shelf for tow months is saying a lot. Orvella was called up to take his place in the bullpen.

The Rays had a late comeback in the works, but managed to beat the Indians 3-1. Verlander (on the indians????) was keeping the Rays' bats in check until the 6th where they knocked 2 runs in. The inning after Zobrist hit a solo home run which happened to be Verlander's 2nd to last hitter; struck out Gemoll to end the inning. No trades have surfaced for the Rays so far, with their salary cap issue it might prevent them from pursuing any players for the time being.

A lot of moves have been completed by the Rays over the past week. The first set of moves were back-to-back trades; one being with the Pirates and the other being the Rockies.
The Pirates sit on the bottom of the league standings with a 42-57 record
The Rockies actually have the 2nd best record in the league at 59-40 record
And the Rays top the league with a 65-34 record
.
.
.
The trade with the Pirates was to acquire 1B Adam LaRoche. The Rays gave up Brian Anderson, Connor Bowie, George Sherrill, and 5000 cash. The Rays lose a great defensive outfielder for a great hitting bench replacement. Anderson is to become a FA at the end of the season, and it seems that he would want a large pay raise if they offered him a starting role next season.

The trade with the Rockies had them acquire Jose Capellan for one of their top relievers Scott Dohmann, the injured Matt Thornton, and 2000 cash. Dohmann returns back to the Rockies (played there from 2004-2006). The Rays managed to satisfy the Rockies' needs by still giving them a top player for their playoff push.
.
.
Both trades have the theme of receiving serviceable players for very team friendly multi-year deals. LaRoche is locked up for 4 years at an AAV of 410 and may be either the Rays' 1B or DH next season since Garko is a FA at the end of 2011.
Capellan has a 3 year deal with an AAV of 450 and will be used in general relief. Even though his ERA is at 4.85 - a downgrade from Dohmann's 2.98 - they seem to have confidence with him.
.
.
.
After both trades were completed, the final piece of news is that the Rays signed Jeremy Affeldt from the FA pool. He had a 4 year 4960 deal at the time of his release and the Rays now have proper cap room to make the move and inked him to absorb that contract. They already moved Affeldt into the team's setup role and move Majewski to general relief as he was sporting a 4.76 ERA

Rays FA signings used/allowed - 1/2
Rays trades used/allowed - 2/3
Rays payroll/cap - 84020/84750

The Rays beat the Red Sox 7-2. Shields looked dominate for the first half of the game, around the end of his outing he gave up 1 run on 3 hits in the 7th inning. Capellan gave up a run of his own. Luckly, the Rays padded a nice lead before the Red Sox got on the board along with a Gomes 3-run home run in the 7th.
3 days left until the trade deadline so we'll see if the Rays make any moves before August.

With a win over the Tigers, the Rays have now won 22 of their last 23 games augmenting their AL East lead. Cueto's first 2 innings didn't seem to foreshadowing anything good but managed to settle down a bit. The Rays had a big 4th inning: having 7 base hits while scoring 5 runs in the process. With a comfy lead, the Rays brought in general relief pitchers to end the game.

No other player transactions went down before the end of July, and it seems that the Rays already have a stacked team.

Price was dealt a loss in an outstanding efforts by both pitching staffs. Price actually had a perfect game through 5.0 IP until Everett (literally, their worst hitter lol) got the Red Sox's first hit of the game. That inning proved to be lethal as the Red Sox strung a couple more hits together to score the only run of the game.

The Rays only had 5 call-ups this season, those include:

Mark Prior
Edinson Volquez
Elliot Johnson
Nyjer Morgan
Nate Schierholtz

September 9th, 2011

The Rays had a walk-off win against the Royals where Lincecum couldn't stretch his outing to 9 full innings. Affeldt blew the lead in the 8th inning but managed to hold it at a tie game. Garko ended the game with a walk-off home run with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. Including that, the other 2 runs came off of Zobrist's 2-run home run.

Zobrist came in clutch late in the game against the Orioles. Trailing for almost 5 innings, Zobrist's bat struck and knocked in 2 runs to swap the lead; Gomes later drove the final run in for insurance. Kazmir has been MLB's best pitcher so far owning a 19-2 record. He leads the AL in Wins, ERA, and K (leads MLB in wins and ERA). He is slatted to have 1 more start, game 162, and then may be the Rays' game 1 starter for the playoffs.
