The Rays couldn't hold on to their 3 run lead as they fell to the Blue Jays. Going to the 7th inning, with 2 outs James was pulled for Ryu to get the final out. A throwing error by Longo sent 2 runners home (the 2 unearned for James, 1 for Ryu) with 2 outs. Ryu failed to get an out as Glover had to clean up the mess. The top of the Rays' order did most of their scoring but even with a 9th inning 1 out double, the Rays weren't able to tie it up.

The Rays had a hit party against Oakland in a 7-2 victory. Smoltz pitched very well to earn a win. With a comfy 6-1 lead the recently struggling Mulder came in to eat some innings. He yielded 1 run of his own slightly lowering his atrocious ERA to 7.07. Upton, Votto, and Gomes all sent the ball over the fence, while each all having 2 RBI.

short update i guess lol

The Rays once again came out in style slugging 3 home runs in a 7-3 win. The Rays' bullpen found some trouble in the 7th inning as the Orioles managed to swing the lead into their favor: 3-2. The next inning, Upton tied the game with a lead off home run. Two batters later, Votto followed and smoked his own solo shot giving the Rays the lead again. Eventually, Zobrist drove the nail home and also hit a solo home run. Even though it wasn't a save situation, A. Miller still came in and closed out the game.

Upton's power continues to surge as he is tied for 3rd in the AL for home runs. Votto just passed his last year home run total and this could lead to a breakout season for the young 1B.

The Rays concluded their draft with the following players:

1st Round, 27th pick:
Jesus Lizarrado, catcher (21 y/o)

2nd Round, 27th pick:
Rod Stultz, long relief pitcher (21 y/o)

3rd Round, 27th pick:
Luke Rush, catcher (21 y/o)
(courtesy of PP27)

Reports indicate that Rush might be more MLB ready than their first round pick; in which case would mean they found a nice gem in the 3rd round. Navarro can elect FA after 2010, so we might see one of these 2 newly drafted catchers crack the roster for 2011.

The Rays woke up late in the game to defeat the Rockies 4-1. Oddly enough, each sides' bat were quiet until the last 1/3 of the game. Iwamura started it off with a double, to be bagged home by Votto. Gomes proceeded to go deep dead center for a 3-0 lead. Upton eventually drove Crawford in during the following inning for their 4th run of the game. Sonnanstine ran into some trouble in the 7th inning when there were runners on 3rd and 2nd, no outs. He intentionally walked Atkins to load the bases. Lefty killer T. Miller was called upon but ended up walking Helton leading to Sonnanstine's 1 ER. T. Miller got out of trouble after. Percival had issues of his own where he also loaded the bases with no outs. A. Miller was put in to face Ian Stewart (has Lefty 1) with 2 outs. The matchup worked in the Rays' favor as A. Miller got Stewart out and finished the 9th inning as well.

(Decided to fast game sim this one since MLBPP crashed on me 2 times :angery:)

The Rays rallied late once again to beat the Braves 4-2. Hinske got the start as the DH today, giving Aybar off. Kazmir had to battle runners each inning but limited the damage to 2 runs. Glover came in and was lights out - in a very efficient manner. In the 6th inning, Crawford lead off with a single and stolen base. The next 3 batters all got hits leading to Votto's game-winning-RBI.

and i will post season stats when the half way point of the season arrives

TRADE ALERT:

The Athletics (35-50) and Rays (48-37) have come to terms on a trade.

Rays received - Frank Thomas 1y/9000, and Keith Foulke 2y/400
Athletics received - JP Howell, Andy Cannizaro, and Eric Hinske

The move is great for the Rays who can now slot the heavy hitting veteran in the DH role as Aybar had been hitting far below last year's production (.266 this year, .322 last year). Foulke - veteran as well - has been outstanding this season and will help bolster the Rays' middle relief corps. We do not believe the Rays will be able to afford to keep Thomas for another year or so, making him a rental for another playoff push. The Athletics get 2 players with excellent team control (Howell, and Cannizaro; and to be fair, I've been training them a lot while buying practice items so their letter skills are much better than default), along with having Hinske under a 2 year contract.

When the trade was verbally agreed upon, the Rays elected to release Trever Miller to compensate for Thomas' 9000 salary hitting their payroll budget; the buyout cost 6000. T. Miller had a 5.33 ERA in 23.2 innings. He might be able to find a home later on as the veteran is excellent against lefties. Non-edit update: eventually got scooped up by the Brewers (39-46).

Rays' payroll/cap: 81170/82500
Trades used/allowed: 1/3

TRADE ALERT:
The Rays (49-38) fired out another transaction, this time with the Giants (43-44).
Rays receive - Noah Lowry, Nate Schierholtz
Giants receive - Adam Wainwight, Jason Hammel, and Willy Aybar

We think the move is based on Waino's contract where the Rays would like more space to work with (Wainright still has 2 more years). Lowry's contract is up at the end of the season and he can elect FA if desired. With an already young pitching core, the Giants now have Wainwright, Lincecum, and Cain locked up for a couple more years. Schierholtz is an interesting pick up and could become a corner OF for the Rays in the next few years

In other news, the Rays have swapped Andy Sonnanstine from the starting rotation for Edwin Jackson.
Sonnanstine has been rolling with a 6.11 ERA, the team's worst; whereas E-Jax has been occupying the team's long relief role with a 3.42 ERA.
Sonnanstine will now become the team's long reliever for the time being until he can get his ERA back on track.

Shields out dueled Vazquez in a hitting fest. The Rays got on the board early in the game only to have the lead be taken away a few innings later. Frank Thomas hit his first home run as a Ray, which tied the game in the 5th inning. The other runs came from a combination of hits that the Rays were able to put together. Percival almost ran into some trouble by allowing 2 base hits with 1 out but managed around it.
