Alright agent, what do you think of our return for Hamels? Was it the right move?

I'm going to take a look at it from both sides:

TEX gets: LHP Cole Hamels, LHP Jake Diekman, $9,500,000 cash

Incredible. I didn't like this deal originally, because I thought Hamels was 33, only under contract through 2016, and getting paid a bunch of money. But he's only 31, he's signed through 2018, and the 9.5M cash PLUS shedding the 26M owed to Harrison essentially makes his yearly average salary eight million dollars -- a ridiculous bargain. Diekman is a reliever. The Rangers desperately need relievers. As long as Freeman stays around, I like that part of the deal. In addition, they did all of this without giving up Mazara, Gallo, or Chi Chi (and they also kept guys like Odor, Profar, and DeShields). I give them an A.

PHI gets: LF Nick Williams, C Jorge Alfaro, RHP Jake Thompson, LHP Matt Harrison, RHP Alec Asher, RHP Jerad Eickhoff

Also incredible. Williams is a guy who's changed his approach this season, becoming a more patient hitter. He is known to have plus speed, a plus arm, and great bat speed. He's been playing some center field this season but is probably a LF long-term. Alfaro is currently injured (torn ankle ligaments, I believe), but he has an 80-grade arm. Thompson has a big-time slider, a rapidly improving changeup, and two good fastballs (four-seam and two-seam). Williams, Alfaro, and Thompson are pretty much consensus top-six prospects for the Rangers (with Gallo, Chi Chi, and Mazara joining them). Harrison will get a fresh start in Philly. He's a great guy, but his velocity is down to the mid-80s and he's basically going to live and die by the ground ball. He could become Jamie Moyer 2.0 maybe. Asher and Eickhoff are also decent pitching prospects, Eickhoff has a mid-90s fastball and a hammer curveball and Asher is viewed as something of a Colby Lewis lite. Tremendous haul for the Phillies.

For another (incredibly qualified) opinion:

Thanks for all this. And yeah Hamels and Darvish will be a great one-two punch next year. Good thing they didn't overpay for CJ Wilson a few years back.

Dish joined in 2008, so PP31 is the second oldest.

Oh damn I thought he was sometime in 09.

I was in 4th grade back in 08. If I had joined back then I would have suffered the same fate as ham bone once did. :P

Yeah it is kinda amazing that I was able to assimilate as well as I did given how I was when I was younger. Though we were all younger back then I guess, and you could find some pretty embarrassing posts of mine if you tried. :P
