Padres beat Mets behind Johnson's stellar start
August 15th, 2015

New York Mets: 2
@
San Diego Padres: 6

San Diego -- Josh Johnson threw 6 innings of 2 run ball (1 unearned) to notch his 11th victory of the year over the Mets. Zack Wheeler threw only 4 innings, becoming 3-13 on the year.

It didn't look good for the Padres in the first inning, as Eric Young Jr. led off the game with a hard single. Curtis Granderson came up and bashed an RBI double making it 1-0 Mets. In the bottom of the second, the Padres struck back. Seth Smith led off the inning with an upper deck bomb to right field, making it 1-1. Willie Dickinson then walked and the next batter, Hiroyuki Nakajima, roped a 2-R homer to right field to make it 3-1. After an Ellsbury double the Padres weren't able to accumulate any more in the inning. In the third, Jedd Gyorko and Seth Smith laced back-to-back singles. Willie Dickinson stepped up and grounded into a double play, but Gyorko came home to extend the lead to 3. The sixth was a shaky inning for Johnson. Ike Davis led off with a double to center. Callaspo and Kouzmanoff flew out not advancing Davis. Anthony Gose lined a base hit to left field bringing Davis to third. Chris Snyder hit a hard ground ball to third which was played easily by Dickinson, but the ball was airmailed over Alonso's head as Davis came in to score, 4-2. Lucas Duda came up to pinch hit but struck out swinging. Jim Connifer came in to pitch in the seventh for the Padres and gave up 2 base runners but shut the door on a fly out to left. In the Padres have of the seventh, Tommy Medica pinch hit for Connifer and crushed a solo homer to right making it 5-2. In the eighth, Chris Denorfia gave the Padres a little more insurance on a solo homer to center to make it 6-2 Friars. Casey Janssen pitched the ninth and ended it easily, 6-2 Padres.

April Analysis

April was a great month for the 2016 Padres, and this could finally be their year. They. Are currently 5.5 games up on the two second place teams, the Dodgers and D'Backs who are both sitting at 14-14. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been a huge asset to the Padres, currently batting .372 with 6 homers and 17 RBI's. Andre Ethier is also batting .330 with 3 homers and 10 ribbies. Jedd Gyorko has also gotten hot lately, batting .309 with 3 shots and 19 runs batted in. Gyorko leads the team with 10 doubles, and Dickinson leads the team in triples with 2 (both in the same game). Salty leads homers with 6, while Alonso, Ellsbury, and Dickinson have all contributed 5 apiece. Yonder Alonso has a team-leading 24 RBI's as well. Casey Kelly is having quite a good season, going 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA. Josh Johnson is 3-2 with a 5.80 ERA, Robbie Erlin is 3-2 with a 2.84 ERA, Alfredo Aceves is 2-1 with a 4.01 ERA, and Andrew Cashner is 1-2 with a 4.36 ERA. The Padres definitely aren't getting what they hoped out of Cashner and Johnson, but are getting more than what they expected from Kelly and Erlin. Tyler Clippard was perfect through April, 14/14 in save opps.
