Gunner ignored them, glancing back at the brawling kids some, but also keeping an eye on the rest of the playground. The kid who had been hit in the face was angry, but the other kid was much bigger than him. The bigger kid grabbed the smaller one, pushed him against the fence, and started yelling at him. After Gunner continued to sit there, the bigger one took the kid and threw him into the rocks. Gunner still did nothing. The smaller one got up, brushed himself off, and laughed. The bigger one started laughing too. They came over to Gunner and told him he sucked. “Why do you say that?” “We were faking it the whole time to see what you would do, but you just sat there,” the little one said. After a teacher arrived, Gunner went inside. The school day went by without anything else odd happening, and in volleyball practice, Gunner thought he did pretty well. She took the belt and…started looping it through his pants? Jeffrey had been expecting a whipping, so this seemed odd to him. “Jeffrey, dear, you need to start wearing a belt. If you don’t, people will see your undies and make fun of you!” his mom said, pinching his cheeks. His cheeks flushed with red, and he suddenly became infuriated. “Get the hell out of my room, and my life!” Jeffrey said. He slammed the door shut, locked it, and started thinking about how he was going to escape from this hellhole he once called “home”. Back when his dad was around. Back when he didn’t have to worry about his embarassing, abusive, helicopter of a mom all the time. Jeffrey laid his head in his hands, quickly falling asleep in his dress clothes. His mom made him wear those, too, because of some “reason” that was a total load of crap, like “good first impressions” or something like that.

“Awesome,” Jordyn wrote on the paper. She turned it in, and the teacher gave her a sticker. Jordyn flashed a fake smile, then sat back down. She fiddled with her sticker, trying to make the teacher like her. When the bell rang, she went to her next class, AP European History, in which they did nothing. Jordyn took the time to think. While she liked her dad and her brother (well, most of the time), her mom just pissed her off sometimes, mostly because of her expectations. I mean, maybe in the ‘50s, it was good to be “ladylike”, but this is the 21st century, and Jordyn felt that she shouldn’t have to live up to her mom’s unreasonably outdated expectations. She decided maybe some basketball would help her clear her mind, but first, volleyball practice. That went well, but they wouldn’t tell anyone if they made the team or not. After volleyball, Jordyn went home, parked the car, went around to the backyard, and started shooting some hoops.

Come on, getting a sticker from the teacher doesn't improve street cred?

Just be lucky that French hasn't turned to cannibalism yet and eaten Jordyn.

MARK: Hello, today we have an exclusive breaking story. Twenty firefighting crews have been called to the scene here, where a group of children is rumored to have set fire to this field, and the six school campuses surrounding it. The firefighters are in the buildings putting out fires, but one crew chief has informed me that there is basically no hope of being able to restore these buildings. The police were called to the scene here at about 3:35 in the morning, when neighbors claimed they saw flames and smoke coming from the field over here. Now, the way the field is set up, there is this large, empty field, surrounded by athletic fields, and then those are attached to the six high school campuses.

MARK: …Okay then. We now have reports that all fires have been put out, but there is irreparable damage to all six buildings, and a plan will be finalized sometime in the coming weeks. For now, though, it looks like no school for anyone in this town. Mark Jones, Channel 5 News. Back to you, Janet.

JANET: Well, that’s certainly good news for kids all over town, but what about those who started the fire?

RON: We have reports indicating that the kids, college-aged, were starting a bonfire when it got out of hand. The report suggests that the kids, after the blaze started spreading, quickly fleed the area. The Tech Institute, one of the six schools located on this property, has 24/7 security cameras, and hopefully they will be able to catch the kids who set the fire.

JANET: Good morning. This is KRPG Morning News. I’m Janet Pope, here live with Ron Wellerman. Today, we have more details on the city’s plan for the many students affected by the major campus fire a week ago. The city council and school board held a joint meeting last night, and the plan was unanimously approved. Their plan is to begin construction on a new, massive, all-grades school in the heart of downtown. All students from the previous six schools: Ghetto Academy, Powerful High, School of the Arts, St. Luke’s Academy, Suburban High, and the Tech Institute will be given the rest of the year off, with local organizations agreeing to host events for those students, such as social events, recreational sports leagues, and the like to keep these kids from causing any more trouble like those college kids did.

RON: And speaking of the college kids, today authorities have announced the arrest of three young men relating to the case. Michael Alvarado, 21, Kenneth Miller, 22, and Ivan Poole, 20, were found on security tape to be guilty of causing the fire. All three have been charged with arson and jailed without bond.

JANET: And isn’t it almost a miracle that the cameras survived?

RON: Well, the Tech Institute very specifically designed those cameras, and the thick cover around them, to be resistant to adverse conditions such as rain, heavy winds, and fire. So I would like to think that is why the cameras survived the fire.

JANET: (censored)

PETEY: Well, today we’re gonna have a high of 87, with winds around 5 mph coming from the northeast. There is a 70 percent change of rain, with a 90 percent chance later in the evening…

RON: Yes, today authorities rolled out the first version of a new website, which will guide students through the process of securing their spot at the new, larger high school currently under construction. Any student who does not sign up in the next month will be charged an additional $100 fee, and another $100 is incurred for every week after that.
