June 10th, 2015

With the team under the control of pitching coach Manny Cortés, I headed to Secaucus, New Jersey, the location of the June rookie draft. We held the second pick, since we got the first in the expansion draft. After nearly eight hours, the first twenty rounds were completed. I came away with my eyes on three players in particular:

OF Tommy Weaver
1st round, 2nd pick
Trajectory - 2
Contact - C(10)
Power - F(71)
Run Speed - B(13)
Arm Strength - B(12)
Fielding - C(10)
Error Resistance - E(6)
Tough Out
Clutch Hit 2

At 24 years old, Weaver is an interesting case. A tall, lanky outfielder, he redshirted his freshman year of college but quickly emerged as the team's leadoff hitter and premier player; however, after being drafted in the 23rd round of the 2014 draft (likely due to his age and past at a less-than-stellar college program), he elected to play for an independent league team. There, he led the league in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, and stolen bases, all while capturing the equivalent of the MVP award and a championship title. He then re-entered the rookie draft, and I found myself drawn to both his talent and his name.

SP Brian Bridges
2nd round, 2nd pick
Top Speed - 93
Control - E(111)
Stamina - C(104)
SLD - 3
CB - 3
KN - 2

A four-year player out of NC State, Bridges was a mediocre reliever until he developed a knuckleball before his junior year. After that, he became the top pitcher for the Wolfpack, leading them to two college world series berths and tossing two no-hitters. His ability to mix his breaking pitches in with a low to mid nineties fastball makes up for his control, which admittedly has room for improvement. I hope to bring him up later in the season to see how his knuckler fares against major-league hitters.

C Eric Stynes
6th round, 2nd pick
Trajectory - 2
Contact - E(6)
Power - F(59)
Run Speed - F(5)
Arm Strength - D(8)
Fielding - E(6)
Error Resistance - D(9)

Eric Stynes will never be a star, but I believe his respectable defensive abilities mean he can soon serve as a backup to Matt McCarthy, since Patrick Warr's skills lie primarily as a DH and playing Donnie Wilde at catcher is not always desirable; however, his hitting needs work before that can happen.

San Diego Padres (28-35) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (37-26)

Final Score:
San Diego Padres - 0
Honolulu Gunmen - 1

June 11th, 2015

The second day of the draft was brutal; I longed to be back in Honolulu with the team.

San Diego Padres (28-36) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (38-26)

Final Score:
San Diego Padres - 2
Honolulu Gunmen - 0

Can a player from an independent league actually re-enter the draft though?

Edit: Hmm, I guess so. Apparently JD Drew did it

Honolulu Gunmen (38-27) vs. New York Mets (42-23)
June 13th-15th

The reigning World Series champs are dominating that National League (with the exception of the Phillies, who sit at 44-21). This is going to be a tough series.
