I'm actually hoping to go over to a friend's (read: girl's) house for New Year's. So there's that.

But other than that, I really don't want anything for Christmas.

There's a difference between wanting a gaming PC, and just a regular one for just everyday use. If he's looking for the latter, a prebuilt is fine

Shameful double post, but skittles, you could build a PC that could run almost all AAA titles at high settings and if it was exclusively for Minecraft you could go much lower, here's one. Only $620 and it's a console killer, with an SSD

If you took away the SSD you could upgrade the mobo and then swap out the fx-6300 for an i5 or 8350, it would be able to run bf4 on ultra settings for sure. nevermind the ridiculously good steam sales over 10% at like gamestop

tl;dr building your own pc can be cheaper or can be more expensive if you want more, also, steam sales.
