Pittsburgh Pirates (42-35) @ Seattle Mariners (33-44)
June 26, 2013

Iwakuma and Company Limit Pirates to Just Four Hits

The Mariners really took control today, taking the lead early, and holding it all day. Seattle started off with two in the second, with a single from Eric Thames, and a triple from Endy Chavez. They got another two in the third, as Kendry Morales shot an RBI double to left, and Thames struck a fly-ball to shallow center, just deep enough to score Micheal Morse from third. They took a break in the fourth, but got another two in the fifth, as Thames came through once again with a double down the right field line, plating two. They finally wrapped up their scoring in the sixth when Morales singles up the middle, bringing home Brenden Ryan.

The seven run output was a bit overkill, as the Pirates had trouble making contact today. They managed just four hits all day off of Hisashi Iwakuma, who was lights out. His only mistakes came in the seventh, when he gave up back to back solo shots to Garrett Jones and Russell Martin on two straight pitches. However, the game was all but over by that point, since the Pirates were still down by five. The Mariners wouldn't look back, as they held on by a score of 7-2.

Are you saying it's wrong to talk to a bag of Skittles? Because if so, I'm going to need to rethink a lot of things. :P

Oakland Athletics (51-38) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (48-40)
July 8, 2013

Pirates Smother Red-Hot Athletics

The Athletics entered their series with the Pirates as winners of seven straight and up against one of their former players, Dallas Braden. Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Brandon Moss launched a fastball to right, breaking up the short lived perfect game. The Pirates countered in the bottom half, when Russell Martin grounded out to Scott Sizemore with the bases loaded. Despite being a disappointing outcome, it was good enough to score Starling Marte from third.

Scoring stopped once again until the seventh, when an unlikely hero in Clint Barmes mashed a two run shot off of Bartolo Colon into the center-field foliage, just his sixth of the season. The Pirates bullpen was once again superb, having an extra workload due to Braden leaving the game early with a strained tricep. As a group, they gave up just two hits in nearly four innings of work, culminating in Jason Grilli striking out the side in the ninth for his twenty-sixth save of the season.
