He's one of the players I made up. They're scattered throughout the league.

Kansas City Royals (21-23) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (24-20)

Kansas City Royals - 0
Honolulu Gunmen - 9

This game was absolutely nuts. We started things in the first, when Juan Hernandez and Matt McCarthy hit back-to-back solo shots. By the start of the 7th, we had just the two runs on a whopping 13 hits. Finally, we managed to score the guys we got on, as Matt McCarthy homered a second time and Derek Wayne followed that up with one of us own in the bottom of the 7th. We really poured it on in the 8th, as Matt McCarthy hit a two-run shot, his third of the night, and Derek Wayne hit his second solo homer.

Meanwhile, Akinori Otsuka turned in the best pitching performance of his career, allowing just seven hits and striking out seven as he picked up the complete game shutout.

Box Score

Kansas City Royals (21-24) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (25-20)

Kansas City Royals - 3
Honolulu Gunmen - 4

Wow.

Just... just wow.

This has got to be my favorite win of the season.

Things started shakily for Johnny Rivera on the mound, as he gave up three runs on six hits in his first three innings of work. We managed to get a run back in the 3rd on a Matt McCarthy home run, but failed to score in the 4th, 5th, and 6th as Zack Greinke shut down our hitters.

Then, in the 7th, with a left-handed reliever on the mound, I put Danny Millwood in for Colin Raines. He thanked me by hitting a solo shot to pull us within one. Devin Edwards worked a 1-2-3 8th, and Matt McCarthy tied the game by singling home Marcus McElroy, who had singled and stolen second earlier in the inning.

With the game tied, I had Adam Wilson come in to pitch the 9th. He only used six pitches as he recorded three quick groundouts, and to the 9th we went. Royals' pitcher Jimmy Gobble, another lefty, easily shut down Donnie Wilde and Steve Bernard, and I began to prepare for extras.

Danny Millwood, however, decided that wouldn't be necessary, taking the first pitch he saw and blasting it into the pool past the center field fence. The park, which was admittedly fairly empty, roared with excitement, and Danny was mobbed as he stepped on home.

Box Score
Win: Adam Wilson (2-0)
Save:
Loss: Jimmy Gobble (0-2)

May 22nd, 2015

Kansas City Royals (21-25) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (26-20)

Kansas City Royals - 2
Honolulu Gunmen - 6

Box Score
Win: Michael Davis (5-0)
Save:
Loss: Gil Meche (1-5)
HR: Marcus McElroy (4), Matt McCarthy (16)

We played well this entire game, but Marcus McElroy's 3-run homer in the 8th really put the nail in the Royals' coffin. And what can I say about Matt McCarthy? With today's home run, he now has 13 in the month of May, five short of the American League record and seven short of the major league record for most home runs in a month.

J. Medrano - 1-2, RBI, K, .302
SS: M. MacKenzie - 2-2, R, SB, .296
M. McElroy - 3-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, .304
J. Hernandez - 0-4, .303
M. McCarthy - 1-4, HR, RBI, R, .273
D. Wayne - 1-4, .347
P. Warr - 0-3, .262
D. Wilde - 0-3, .299
S. Bernard - 0-3, .300
C. Raines - 2-3, 2B, 2 R, SB, .277

With today's win, we're now tied for first in the American League West at 27-20!

Series Preview: Seattle Mariners (18-29) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (27-20)
May 23rd-25th

Key Players:

Erik Bedard - SP
7-2, 2.41 ERA, 55 K
97, C, A, 2SFB(2), CUT(2), CB(3), CHG(2), VS LH Batter 4, STR Finisher, Dr. K, Consistency 4, Choke Artist
Bio: A 29-year old in the prime of his career, Bedard is a lefty who consistently shuts down opposing hitters with his blazing fastball and solid curve. Acquired from the Orioles in a February 8th trade, he has since become the undisputed ace for the Mariners.
Analysis: Bedard's line has only gotten better since we saw him a week ago, so it's a good thing we won't see him at all in this series.

Ichrio Suzuki - CF
.313, 18 2B, 12 SB
2, A, E, A, A, B, B, Clutch Hit 4, Contact Hitter, Push Hitter, Hot Hitter, Gd Bunt, Grt IF HTR, Throwing 4, Durability 4, Base Running 4, Spider Catch, Cannon Arm, Gd Rain, Pr Day Game, Star, Slap Hitter, Aggressive STL, Aggressive RUN, Aggressive FLD
Bio: The pride and joy of Seattle, Ichiro Suzuki has dominated the majors since his transition from the NPB in 2001. He may be getting on in years, but he is still easily the best leadoff man in the game.
Analysis: When Ichiro inevitably gets on base, Matt McCarthy will have to be ready to gun the ball down to second quickly if we have any hopes if nabbing him.

Bryan Thomas - 1B
.260, 5 HR, 16 RBI
2, B, D, D, C, A, A, Throwing 4, Gold Glover, Barehand CTH, Star, Slap Hitter, Aggressive FLD
Bio: Thomas definitely deviates from the typical first baseman, but that doesn't mean he's any less of a superstar. Like his teammate Ichiro, although to a lesser extent, Thomas focuses on singles and doubles rather than home runs. Despite his relatively large stature, he rarely hits more than 25 home runs. He's also the best fielding first baseman in the AL, and regularly wins the Gold Glove award.
Analysis: A great fielding first baseman can make his entire infield better, and the Mariners are already one of the best fielding teams in the league.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Cesario Castillo (2-4, 4.15) vs. Miguel Batista (3-3, 3.09)

Game 2
Charlie Huff (4-2, 3.67) vs. Jarrod Washburn (1-4, 6.02)

Game 3
Brendan Bikowski (3-2, 3.70) vs. Gio Cruz (0-1, 1.86)

Seattle Mariners (18-29) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (27-20)

Seattle Mariners - 2
Honolulu Gunmen - 1

I thought we had this one in the bag, but sending Cesario Castillo out for the 9th turned out to be a mistake. He gave up hits to the first two batters he faced, and Mike Colyer served up a triple that gave the M's the lead and, eventually, the win.

Box Score
Win: Miguel Batista (4-3)

Loss: Cesario Castillo (2-5)

May 24th, 2015

Seattle Mariners (19-29) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (27-21)

I'm starting Danny Millwood in left field today with lefty Jarrod Washburn on the mound.

Seattle Mariners - 0
Honolulu Gunmen - 1

Matt McCarthy blasted his 14th home run of the month with a solo shot in the second to straightaway center field, and that was all we needed as Charlie Huff turned in another incredible start, finishing with eight shutout innings and seven strikeouts while only allowing five Mariners to reach base.

Box Score
Win: Charlie Huff (5-2)
Save: Rick Allen (15)
Loss: Jarrod Washburn (1-5)
HR: Matt McCarthy (17)

J. Medrano - 3-4, K, CS, .305
D. Millwood - 0-4, .313
J. Hernandez - 1-4, .296
M. McCarthy - 1-3, HR, RBI, R, .273
D. Wayne - 0-3, .344
P. Warr - 2-3, .269
D. Wilde - 0-3, .292
S. Bernard - 0-3, .305
C. Raines - 1-3, .278

W: C. Huff - 8 IP, 4 H, 7 K, BB, 3.16
SV: R. Allen - IP, 5.89

May 25th, 2015

Seattle Mariners (19-30) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (28-21)

Seattle Mariners - 3
Honolulu Gunmen - 2

We rallied in the 9th to tie the game at two, and I sent Rick Allen out for the 10th. He gave up a run on two hits, and we were unable to come back to tie again in the bottom half.

Rick was pretty upset after the game, but I assured him he was fine. After all, the first hit was an infield single by Ichiro, who advanced to second on a passed ball that was 100% on McCarthy.

Box Score
Win: Gio Cruz (1-1)
Save:
Loss: Rick Allen (0-4)
HR:

J. Medrano - 0-3, RBI, SF, .300
M. McElroy - 2-4, R, .318
J. Hernandez - 1-4, .295
M. McCarthy - 0-4, 2 K, .268
D. Wayne - 1-4, 2B, RBI, .342
PR: C. Raines
D. Millwood - 2-4, .327
D. Wilde - 1-4, 2B, .291
R. Schapp - 1-4, R, K, .200
M. MacKenzie - 0-4, .258

B. Bikowski - 6.2 IP, 6 H, 8 K, 2 BB, 2 ER, 3.56
D. Edwards - 2.1 IP, H, 3 K, 3.05
L: R. Allen - IP, 2 H, ER, 6.05

Immediately after the game, we hopped on a plane and flew to New York to face the Yankees. It was a ten hour flight, plus there's a six hour time difference, so we didn't arrive until 9:00 EST. Luckily, we have the 26th off, so hopefully our players will be well rested.

Hm, I'm starting to feel a little hungry...

As if on cue, there was a knock on the door. I headed over to and looked through the peephole. I sighed.

"What is it, Claire?"
"Come on, we're going out to eat!"
"...Let me guess. Burgers?"
"No, Italian! Jeez, Matty, don't you ever eat anything other than burgers?
She can't possibly be serious.

I weighed my options and opened the door. Claire looked up at me with a smile.

"Ready to go?"

I rubbed my neck.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

Claire, forever unshaken, took this as an excited "Yes!" and attempted to pull me out the door.

"Hold on," I said, yanking my arm away from her grip. "I need to get my room key."

I headed into the bedroom and looked around for that small card. I checked under the nightstand, on the bed, and on the floor before finally finding it on top of the television. As I grabbed it, I heard Claire talking to someone out by the door.

"...just came to see if Skip wanted to head out with us."

I opened the bedroom door and saw Evan Lorrier standing outside in the hallway, talking to Claire who was now standing inside the door. Both turned to me as the door opened.

"Hey Skip!" said Lorrier. "A bunch of the other guys wanted to see if you were interested in tagging along with us for dinner."

I immediately saw my opportunity to get out of eating with Claire and jumped on it.

"Yeah, that sounds like a good time. I'm in."
"Awesome!"

He turned to Claire.

"You're free to come as well, if you'd like."
Evan...
"I'd love to!" Claire said, beaming.
"Great!" said Lorrier. "I'll tell the guys."
"Come on, Matty! Let's go!" Claire said, reaching for my arm. I pulled away and gave her a look.

Evan led the way, talking on the phone to some other players as we walked. We exited the hotel and Evan hailed a taxi, motioning for me to take the front seat when it arrived.

"106th and Manhattan," Evan told the cabbie. I turned around.
"So where are we going, anyway?"
"This great burger place. I used to go there all the time as a kid."
"Burgers! That's good, Matty loves burgers," Claire chirped from behind me. I ignored her and continued the conversation.
"You grew up around here?"
"Yep. I've got my family coming to the game tomorrow."
I better make sure to get him in the game, then...

We drove for a while in silence, but it was broken by Evan.

"So how long have you two been dating?"

Initially confused, I turned to look at Evan. I then looked at Claire and realized what he was asking.

"Oh. Oh, no. No. No... no."
...
"No."
...
"Really, Matty? Five no's?" asked Claire.

Evan seemed a bit embarrassed, but brushed it off.

"Ah, I'm sorry, it's just that when I got to your room..."
"No, no no no, she isn't staying with me, she just came by to see if I wanted to go out for dinner and stepped in while I went-"
...
"No, not go out for dinner in that way, just like-"
...
"She's my assistant."
...
"Ah, sorry about that then."
"Er, no problem."

I felt my face reddening and turned away from Evan and Claire as they conversed for the rest of the drive.

(To be continued...)

I was about to say, is Claire his assistant.. or? I was confused myself, heh.

We arrived at a place called "The Green Door". Evan kindly paid for the taxi, and we headed inside to grab a table.

The place appeared to be a typical sports bar. The lighting was minimal, there were a couple of pool tables in back, and the walls were lined with flat screen television sets, most of them turned to ESPN or MLB Network.

"How many will there be?" asked a smiling hostess. She was stunningly attractive, and I found my heart leaping when I noticed her. Evan, however, didn't miss a beat.
"I'd say about ten," he told her.
"Just a moment."

She left, then returned about a minute later.

"Right this way."

She led us to a spot where four tables had been combined. We took our seats just as another group arrived. Evan waved them over. Among them, I saw Roy Schapp, Adam Wilson, Akinori Otsuka, Derek Wayne, and Devin Edwards. They all took their seats. Nearest to me, besides Evan and Claire, were Akinori Otsuka and Adam Wilson, who sat across from me.

"Did you see that hostess?" asked Derek Wayne. "Hot damn."
"You should talk to her," suggested Roy Schapp with a smirk. Derek laughed.
"Yeah, I was just thinking it's been too long since I'd been blown off by an attractive girl.
Derek punched his fellow right fielder jokingly as our waitress came back with drinks. She took our orders and left. Conversation resumed.

"So, Evan," said Edwards. "How many shutout innings do you have to throw before skip gives the closing job?"

I, caught off guard by the unexpected question, stumbled over my words.

"Oh, uh... well-"
Evan intervened. "I think Ricky would have to blow a save before he lost his job," he said with a smile.
Edwards laughed and turned to me. "It was just a joke, Skip. Jeez, you really need to loosen up."
I laughed nervously. "Oh. Heh. Heheh."

The other end of the table began to talk amongst themselves, leaving Adam, Otsuka, Evan, Claire and I to talk. Adam gestured to Claire and I.
"So how long have you two-"
Evan stopped him. "Been working together? About six months, right Skip?"
There was a brief silence. "Oh, um, yeah," I confirmed.
"Oh, sorry, I just assumed..." said Adam. "You guys'd be cute together, though."

Claire flashed a crooked smile, and I shook my head at her. Noticing Otsuka was on his phone, I decided to change the subject.

"What are you looking at there, Otsuka?"

He looked up at me and formulated a reply.

"Oh, just some baseball scores."
"Yeah? What'd the Angels do today?" asked Adam.
"Oh, no, not MLB. NPB."

None of us seemed to understand what he said, so I decided to be the one to ask.

"The NPB?"
"Yes," said Otsuka, nodding. "Professional baseball league in Japan."
"Ah. What team?"
"The Yomiuri Giants. I've loved them since I was small."
"How'd they do?"
Otsuka shook his head. "Not good. They lost 14 to 2. It's those damn Knights."
"The Knights?"
"Yes. Came into the league last season, but they're already one of the best. Their first baseman, Kurihara, is the best power hitter in Japan. I'm glad I don't have to face him here."
"Hm. Matt, you should get him to join the Gunmen," said Evan.
"I don't think that will happen," said Otsuka. "Their GM is very good at keeping players in the NPB."

Our food came shortly thereafter and the talking died down as we ate. By the end of the meal, we were all stuffed. The players were going to split the bill, but I offered to cover it. They graciously accepted, and I assured them it was no problem. The bill was only a little over $100, so I didn't mind at all.

After everyone else said their goodbyes and parted ways, Evan offered to split a cab again back to the hotel, but I told him that wasn't necessary. He took the first cab that came by, and I hopped in the one after that, Claire following.

"Hey, who said we were splitting a cab?" I asked half-jokingly.
"Oh come on, Matty, what kind of couple takes separate cabs?"

I froze and gave her the evilest look I could muster. She laughed and pushed me into the cab.

"I'm not sure what's cuter, when you're embarrassed or when you're mad."
"Don't say that."
"We could be cute together, just like Adam said."
"Stop."

If you look, that's actually the score of the game the Knights played on May 25th, 2015 (played at around 6:00 AM on May 26th, 2015 EST).

6-2, 2.67 ERA, 70 K
90, C, A, SCB(6), SLV(3), CCHG(4), FORK(3), Spin 4, Dr. K, Gd Delivery, Gd Reflexes
Bio: It's not hard to see why Kenneth Howard will be easily be a first ballot Hall of Famer. His curveball is absolutely incredible, and his other breaking pitches aren't shabby either. He's lost a few miles per hour to age, but he's still one of the best.
Analysis: We'll face Howard in game one of this series. He'll obviously be a challenge.

Paul Ceplin - SP
5-3, 2.59 ERA, 76 K
99, C, A, 2SFB(1), CHG(3), H-SNK(4), Fastball Life 4, Gd Low Pitch, Dr. K, Battler
Bio: A perfect complement to Kenneth Howard, Ceplin is one of the best power pitchers in the game today. He's 35 and getting on in years, but still frequently throws in the high 90's and clearly has plenty left in the tank.
Analysis: Right after taking on Howard in game 1, we'll face Ceplin. He's currently 4th in the MLB in strikeouts behind Tigers pitcher Verlander, Indians pitcher Sabathia, and Twins pitcher Shogun, and our team is nothing if not strikeout prone. I won't admit it to the players, but I'm worried about the first two games.

Derek Jeter - SS
.369, 12 H, 43 RBI
2, C, B, B, D, B, C, Contact Hitter, Hot Hitter, Bunt Master, Gd IF HTR, Barehand CTH, HD 1st Slide, Stealing 2, Star, Aggressive RUN, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: The face of the Yankees for years, Jeter is one of the best shortstops in the game and will undoubtedly be a Hall of Famer.
Analysis: He's leading the Yanks in all three triple crown categories and is somehow able to pull of both being a Yankee and being well-liked by non-Yankee fans.

This lineup is one of the best in the Majors, and while Jeter is leading the way, it's worth keeping in mind the talents of Alex Rodriguez (.335, 11 HR), Jorge Posada (.365, 10 HR), and Johnny Damon (.271, 11 SB).

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1

Akinori Otsuka (3-1, 5.13) vs. Kenneth Howard (6-2, 2.67)

Game 2

Johnny Rivera (1-2, 3.45) vs. Paul Ceplin (5-3, 2.59)

Game 3

Michael Davis (5-0, 3.45) vs. Phil Hughes (3-3, 7.33)

Honolulu Gunmen (28-22) vs. New York Yankees (30-20)

Final Score:
Honolulu Gunmen - 0
New York Yankees - 5

This game was just a complete embarrassment. Marcus McElroy hit a ground ball single in the first, but we didn't get any more hits the rest of the game and Kenneth Howard picked up 16 strikeouts en route to a shutout victory. Ugh.

Final Score:
Honolulu Gunmen - 6
New York Yankees - 8

I don't think I've ever seen such a poor pitching performance. Rivera didn't even record a single out as the Yanks scored six runs off him in the first inning (and then another two off Paul Casey). We managed to pull within two thanks to a four run 8th, but Mariano Rivera shut the door in the 9th and we lost again.

I'm worried about Paul Casey, whose ERA stands at 6.95. He seems shaken and might need to spend some time in AAA to regain his confidence.

Honolulu Gunmen (28-24) vs. New York Yankees (32-20)

Final Score(10):
Honolulu Gunmen - 5
New York Yankees - 6

We almost had this one... it was 4-1 in the 5th when Alex Rodriguez blasted a three-run homer to tie things up. The score stayed at 4-4 until Matt McCarthy homered in the top of the 8th. I called upon Mike Colyer to set things up for Rick Allen, but he served up an RBI single with two outs in the inning. The 9th was scoreless for both sides, so we went to the 10th. LaTroy Hawkins got us 1-2-3 in the top half, and in the bottom half, Bobby Abreu crushed an Adam Wilson changeup over the center field wall for a walk-off home run.

I also have no idea what's happened to Jose Medrano. Today's game marked the 4th straight he's gone hitless in. I have no choice but to leave him in the lineup due to his glove work, but I might need to call up a shortstop from AAA to give Medrano a break, something I'd probably have to demote Roy Schapp to do.

We now fly to Chicago to take on the White Sox.

Box Score
Win: LaTroy Hawkins (1-0)
Save:
Loss: Adam Wilson (2-1)
HR: Bobby Abreu (5), Alex Rodriguez (14), Juan Hernandez (17), Derek Wayne (8, 9)

Rough.. though we know the 2008 Yankees are probably damn tough to beat. I like that the pitchers added to them are old vets still going. It's typical for NY, heh. 99 at age 35 is insane..
