2011 Opening-day lineup

4/2 – 3/2011: Iowa City Country versus Kansas City Royals

Against right-handed starting pitcher Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals), the Country's opening day lineup was as follows:

    1. Erdos (BDBDCD), CF
    2. Huisman (BDCCCC), SS
    3. Hudson (BBABAC), 2b
    4. Cust (BAEBDF), LF
    5. Braun (CADDEG), DH
    6. Johnson (BBDDDB), 1B
    7. Pence (BBDCBC), RF
    8. Fields (BBEBEC), 3b
    9. McCurdy (CDEBCC), C

Game one: Country Lincecum (100 DA SL – five, 2SF – three, DCB – four, CH - four) versus Royals Banister (91 CA 2SF – one, CU – three, CB – two, CH – three)

The first home run of the year was a solo shot from Orlando Hudson in the bottom of the first. The Royals tied it up when Gaithright drove in third baseman Gordon, who singled and moved to second on fielders choice. Gathright came around to score when the Royals batter, completely fooled on an 0-2 slider tailing away, barely got the head of the bat on the ball, but it was enough to send it over the head of first baseman Dan Johnson. The Country took back the lead when McCurdy singled, Hudson walked two outs later, both players moved up on a wild pitch, and then Cust hit a soft single to center. End of three, three – two Country

Lincecum looked strong, especially in the sixth inning when, after giving up a one-out double, he struck out the Royals third and fourth batters. In the bottom of the sixth, singles from Cust, Braun, Johnson, and then a Pence homerun, brought in four runs and sent Banister to the showers. End of six, seven – two, Country

When the Royals got three one-out singles in a row, it brought in a run and one out later, Gathright hit an infield single to load the bases with two outs, and the Country went to their bullpen. Broxton went to a full count before inducing the inning ending grounder two second. Broxton started the eighth, but left with a run in and runners at first and third with one out. Jiang recorded the second out of the inning, before giving up a deep double over the centerfielders head that brought in two runs. The Country's Matt Kemp, who was a defensive substitution for Jack Cust when the Country built their lead early in the day, and Ryan Braun, popped out to the infield quickly, but then Johnson gave the Country a little cushion when he hit a home run off of a Johnny Peralta splitter. End of eight, Eight – six, Country

Jiang stayed in to pitch to the left-handed Joey Gaithright, and then gave way to Harden after collecting his out. Harden, who improved his splitter to level six during the spring, looked sharp, and recorded the next two outs easily.

Final score: eight – six, Country

Comments: Lincecum was effective in pitching a solid 6 – 2/3 innings, during which he allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. He seemed to rely on his fastball much more often, with just under 50% of his pitches being fourseam fastballs, and about 60 to 70% of his pitches being either a four seamer or two seam fastball.

Game two: Depablos versus Meche

After scoring two runs in the first, the Royals loaded the bases and scored a run on a fielders choice in the 2d. The Country were poised for a big third inning, with runners at second and third with one out, but Erdos ground into an inning ending double play.

A Jack Cust homerun in the fourth off of a hard slider, and an RBI single from Pence one out after Ryan Braun doubled off the centerfield wall, closed the gap to one run. In the sixth, Braun homered off of a Meche changeup, tying the game.

The game entered the ninth inning tied at three and RP Brown, who stayed in the game after pitching a solid eighth, retired the side uneventfully. Meche, who tired in the eighth but still retired the Country in order, stayed in to pitch the 9th, and gave up a game-winning walkoff homerun to Hunter Pence.

Final score: four – three, Country

Comments: in the first two games, Erdos and Huisman are a combined 0/16; Depablos started out shaky, allowing three runs in the first two innings, before settling down nicely, shutting down the Royals for the next 4-2/3 innings, and recording six strikeouts in the process.

4/4 – 7/2011: Iowa City Country versus Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have some new faces on their team and in today's opening game against the country, Julio Lugo is batting leadoff and playing shortstop while Lance Berkman mans first base. The White Sox lost Paul Konerko to free agency this off-season

Game one: Country Pettyjohn (96 DB 2SF – three, SL – three, CB – two, PA – three) versus White Sox Nolasco (95 FC 2SF – one, CB – three, CH – two)

Pettyjohn struggled as usual the first inning, allowing runners to reach second and third, and did so again in the third, but he racked up five strikeouts in those first three innings as well. In the bottom of the third, Huisman got his first hit of the season – a single to right field that allowed Spilborghs to score.

In the fourth, a Pence double brought in Cust and Braun, and Hudson added an RBI of his own. Pettyjohn tired, but finished out the fourth and Grindell, who was supposed to start today's game, but was in blue condition, started the fifth inning. In the sixth, Grindell gave up a home run to Jim Thome.

In the bottom of the seventh, Riggins, filling in at catcher, led off with a softly hit single and made it to third on Spilborghs' second double of the day. Huisman hit a fly ball to centerfield and Riggins was cut down at the plate for a double play, and Cust hit an inning ending fly ball to right. In the eighth, Braun had a solo shot off of a tiring Scott Linebrink. Jiang, pitching his third inning, gave up a homerun to Uribe. Broxton came in and recorded the next out before giving up a single and then a homerun that brought the White Sox to within a run. The Country let Broxton face Lance Berkman, representing tying run, and Broxton came through, striking out Berkman on three pitches.

Final score: five – four, Country

After the game, Josh Fields reported in for medical treatment, reporting side pains. He is expected to be sidelined for four days. DeVore who can play second and short, replaces fields on the major-league roster.

Game 2: the White Sox took an early one – zero lead against Rijo when Pierzynski doubled and came home on a Quinten single. It took until the fifth inning for the Country to tie the game when Huisman, batting eighth, singled, stole second, and scored on a McCurdy hit to left field. The White Sox took back the lead on a Lance Berkman homerun, but Braun hit a two run homerun in the bottom half of the inning, and the Country knocked in several more for good measure. Final score: six – two, Country

Game three: Bailey pitches a solid 7 innings, allowing 3 runs, while DeVore goes 3/4 with a double and Braun hits a two run homerun as the Country beat the White Sox five – three

Game four: Braun goes 3/4 with two home runs and three RBIs, but when Harden gives up a three run lead in the top of the ninth, it is up to Erdos, who gets a pinch hit walk off RBI single with DeVore on second.

Man, I haven't seen a team this stacked in a while. I smell at least 150 wins.

I actually wonder if I'm too stacked. Might need to downgrade

4/8 – 10/2011: Iowa City Country versus Cleveland Indians

The Indians have not made any moves this year, relying on last year's transactions to see them through. Some of those pickups from last year include catcher Jorge Posada, 2b/SS Aron Hill (DBCECD), SS Khalil Greene (EBDCCC)

Game one: Country Lincecum (100 DA 2SF – three, SL – five, DCB – four, CH – four) versus Indians Westbrook (93 CFA CU – two, CB – three, CH – three, HSK – four)

It took until the third inning for the first score when Jack Cust hit a two-out solo homerun. That must have awakened the Indians, as Travis Hafner hit a two run moon shot off of a drop curveball in the fourth, and Sizemore added an RBI single in the fifth. Erdos drove in a run in the seventh. A tiring Westbrook closed out the eighth, but when he began the ninth, he threw a slow fastball down the middle of the plate that Hunter Pence hammered for the game-tying homerun, and in dramatic fashion, Spilborghs entered with two outs and the winning run on second and pinch hit a walkoff game-winning single.

Final score: four – three, Country

After the game, it was announced that Josh Fields has recovered, and DeVore was sent down to make room; in a somewhat surprising move, Josh Hamilton was called up, and Erdos optioned to the minors.

Game two: Country Depablos (94 DB SL – three, CB – four, the SL – four) versus Indians Francis (91 BA 2SF – two, SL – two, CB – two, CH – two)

The Country scored a run in the third on singles from McCurdy, Spilborghs, and Hudson, while Depablos allowed base hits, but no scores for the Indians. The Country seemed to have no answer to Grady Sizemore, who seemed to make it into scoring position after every at bat, but the Country's "bend but don't break defense" was still able to keep him from crossing the plate, although in the seventh inning, the latter runner inches going position with Sizemore coming to the plate and he tied the game with an RBI single. Sizemore went to third on the next play, but was stranded when Hafner to hit into an inning ending Double play. In the bottom half of the inning, Hunter pence Hit the 100th homerun of his career. In the eighth, the Indians Kennedy had a two run home run off of Jiang. In the bottom of the eighth, Jack cost entered as a pinch-hitter for Shawn Riggins and smacked a home run over the leaping outstretched arms of the Indians leftfielder. Two batters later, Ryan Braun got his first hit of the day – a solo homerun that restored the country's lead once again.

Grady Sizemore led off the 9ht with a single against Horton, moved to second on a fielders choice and scored tying run on a Travis Hafner double, and then went ahead when Kennedy singled to left. The Indians have several closer options, and went to BJ Ryan (nine for FB to SF – two, SL – four) to protect their one run lead, Which he did.

Final score: five – four, Indians

Comments: this game had six lead changes, five of which came in the last three innings. The Indians out hit the country 17 – 7. This is Harden's second blown save, matching his total from 2010. Josh Fields and Dan Johnson were a combined 0/4. Fields is hitting under 100 for the season.

The Country and the Astros were the last remaining undefeated teams, and both lost today, the Astros also losing by a score of five – four to the Nationals

Game three: Country Grindell (94 EB CU – four, CB – three, PA – four, HSK – four) versus Indians Carmona (98 CA SL – one, CH – one, HSK – five)

After the game, the Country's batting coach explained that their goal was to lay off the sinker and count on Carmona's slider having very little movement since he was in blue condition. The strategy seemed to pay off since Hudson scored after smacking a leadoff double off the right-field fence and Braun followed with a two run homerun. Two innings later, Hudson led off with a home run off of a Carmona sinker. The following inning, Josh Hamilton homered with Pence on first. End of four, six – zero, Country

DeLucci put the Indians on the scoreboard with a leadoff homerun in the fifth, but that was only the beginning, as the next batters singled and doubled their way to four runs. Six – four, Country

In the seventh, Hudson hit his second homerun of the day – this one a three run shot over the left field fence. Harden entered for the bottom of the 9th even though it was a non-save situation. He allowed one run to score on three singles, but did not allow further damage.

Final score: nine – five, Country

4/11/2011: The Country and Brewers announced the completion of their trade that began with the Country sending JR Towles to the Brewers in exchange for Ryan Braun. What we did not know at the time, was that it required the Country to send the Brewers Josh Hamilton or Matt Kemp in exchange for cash within two weeks thereafter. On April 11, the Country announced they are sending Josh Hamilton to the Brewers in exchange for $1.83 million.

4/11-14/2011: Iowa City Country at Chicago White Sox

Game one: Country Rijo (97 DB SL – five, CB – three, FO-3) at White Sox Contreras (95 FB 2SF – one, SL – one, CH – one, SP – four)

Nick Swisher gave the White Sox a one – zero lead with a third inning homerun. Jack Cust tied the game with a homerun of his own in the fourth. The score remained tied until the next time Cust came to bat, this time in the sixth. After hitting a ball just left of the left field foul pole, Cust crushed a split fingered fastball and put it over the right field wall. Swisher led off the bottom of the sixth and smacked a slider tailing up and in for the game-tying homerun. Rijo was pulled from the game but the Sox continued to single their way for four more runs. End of six, six – two White Sox

In the seventh, the Country hit single after single and moved well from first to third, ultimately scoring two runs to pull within one. In the top of the 9th, the White Sox brought in McDougall (98 FB HSL – three, CB – two, SK-1) to close out the game and he did so, with the help of a game ending double-play.

Final score: six – five, White Sox

Comments: the first four runs of the game were scored on solo homeruns from Nick Swisher and Jack Cust. For both, it was their fifth and sixth homeruns of the season

Game two: Country Bailey (94 DB 2SF - three, HSL – three, DCB – four) at White Sox Danks (90 DB SL – one, CH – two)

Jim Thome started the bottom of the second with a homerun on an outside fastball. The White Sox did not hold on to their leave for long, as in the top of the third, Ryan Spilborghs hit his first home run of the season – a two run shot to left center field. In the fourth inning, doubles by Cust and Johnson, followed by a McCurdy single, brought in two more runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Thome hit his second home run of the day – this one with Lance Berkman on-base. Four – three, Country

The score remained four – three entering the sixth, in part because after Dan Johnson made a mental error that was scored as a "fielders choice" even though he could have stepped on first after picking up the ground ball to end the inning, Jim Thome, who homered In both his prior at-bats, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and struck out on four pitches. The Country rubbed salt in the wound with a leadoff homerun from Cust, and after Matt Kemp singled, Johnson hit a two run homerun. Bailey tired in the bottom of the sixth, but finished the inning strong. Seven – three, Country

With two outs in the seventh, Braun homered to right field. Andrew Brown started off the seventh bottom of the seventh and, with the help of a double play, faced the minimum batters batting. Eight – three, country

In the eighth, Lance Berkman hit a homerun just inside the right-field line pole with Nick Swisher on-base. The country matched that in the top of the ninth when Braun homework with Hudson on second. The bottom of the ninth generated excitement, as Ozuna and Lugo started the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a fielders choice. The country then intentionally walked Lance Berkman to get to Lomasney (EEE), who pinch-hit for Jim Thome earlier in the game. Lomasney ground out to second, ending the game.

Final score: 10 – 5, Country

Comments: Josh Fields was 1/5, his loan hit coming in his only at-bat against right-handed pitching today. That it raised his batting average to 136.

In an unusual move, the Country announced that Josh Fields and Rich Harden are being sent down to the minors to work on some mechanics issues. Spot starter Chuck James and midfielder more have been called out to the major league rosters. In addition, Matt Kemp was sent down to the minors and third-year player and corner infielder Merrill (DCEDDD) was called up and his place

Game three: country James (95 CB SL – four, CH – three) at White Sox Vazquez (95 CA SL – two, CB – three, SP – one, CH – three)

When Orlando Hudson swamped at a two – one bitch, there was no doubt from the moment he left the bat that he had let off the game with a homerun, As it's height and distance far out shown the homerun Jack cost hit two batters later, but it was not more impressive than the homerun Lance Berkman hit to put the White Sox on the board in the bottom of the first. An RBI single from the White Sox Ozuna tied the game the second. Erdos let off the third with his first home run of the season, and cut followed his second of the day. The fireworks continued in the bottom of the inning when you Swisher homer to left And Lance Berkman tied the game with his second homerun Of the day. One out later, Xavier Nady homered to give the White Sox their first lead of the day, and sent James to the showers, replaced by Stratton (88 DB SL – three, CB – four, F – three, SHU – four). And of three, five – four White Sox

Dan Johnson being with a leadoff homerun in the top of the sixth, and hence followed with the go-ahead Home run. The country maintained they are one run lead until he crazy eighth inning when the White Sox have first and second with two outs, and tied the game on back-to-back infield singles.

The score remained tied at six until the 11th inning when Spilborghs pinch-hit for Schrager after pants had a one-out double. Billboards came through with a soft single to right, stole second, and scored when McCurdy squirted the ball between the White Sox first and second baseman. Mccurdy went to second on the throw home and came around to score on divorce single, but was called out at the plate. Replays show that the ball beat him home, but that the courteously under the tag. Devore score from first on Hudsons double that split the right and centerfielders. And Erdos single Extended the country's lead to four. Broxton started the ninth inning and recorded the first two outs quickly before surrendering a homerun to Nadey, But then he closed out the game on a ground ball to short

Final score: 10 – seven (11), Country

Game four: Country Lincecum (100 DA 2SF – three, SL – five, DCB – four, CH – four) at White Sox Zap (91 DB CB – one, FO-2)

The Country broke through first, scoring two runs in the fourth when Jack Cust watched three forkball's go by and then slammed a fastball over the centerfield fence with Erdos on-base. The White Sox loaded the bases with one out and tied the game before Lincecum, pitching in purple condition, could close out the inning.

In the fifth, Nick Swisher continued to feast on country pitching, hitting a homerun after doubling in his prior to at-bats. The White Sox starter tired in the sixth, but retired three Country batters in a row. He continued to pitch into the seventh, recording the first out quickly, but going three – one on Dan Johnson who homered on the next pitch, tying the game.

Xavier Nady broke the tie with a solo homerun in the eighth off of Uchiyama. Carlos Quentin and Urine tacked on homeruns for good measure. The Country were retired in order in the 9th.

Final score: six – three, White Sox

Comments: The Country hits into three double plays in the first five innings; For the White Sox, Nick Swisher was 4/4 with two doubles and the homerun, while Lance Berkman was 0/4 with two strikeouts

4/15 – 17/11: Iowa City Country versus Kansas City Royals

Game one: Country Depablos (94 DB SL – three, CB – four, the ESL – four) versus Royals Meche (96 BA 2SF – one, HSL – two, DCB – four, CH – two)

With two good pitchers, the Country broke through in the third when Spilborghs singled, stole second, and came home on a Dan Johnson single up the middle. That was the only run of the game, as both teams had solid pitching and good defense, with both starters lasting until the end.

Final score: one – zero, Country

Comments: Depablos held the Royals to three hits with five strikeouts, while the Country only managed seven hits; Devore, who upped his arm strength to level C recently, was filling in at second base for Orlando Hudson, and he and Huisman seemed to scoop up every ball that hit the ground. He is credited with 11 fielded balls this game, and on one of those, he actually ranged behind second base to the left side while Huisman covered second – he successfully retrieved the ball, but could not throw out the runner in time.

Game two: Country Grindell (94 EB CU – four, CB – three, PA – four, HSK – four) versus Royals Rodriguez (92 CA CB – two, CH – two)

Pence homered in the second with Dan Johnson on first, and a few batters later, Spilborghs hit a mammoth homerun with two runners on base. Dan Johnson added to the Country's lead with a homerun of his own in the third. In the sixth, Spilborghs singled, stole second, and scored on a shallow single from Sean Riggins, who came in as a defensive replacement for Huisman two innings earlier. The Royals finally pushed a runner across the plate when they led off the night with a single, that batter made a third on two fielders choices, and then Rios grounded a ball just outside of Dan Johnson's grasp.

Final score: seven – one, Country

Game three: Country Rijo (97 DB SL – four, CB – three, FL – three) versus Royals Jimenez (93 DB SL – one, CB – two, CH – two)

Some shoddy fielding by Josh Fields at third and DeVore at second, combined with some timely hitting by the Royals led to two runs scored. Dan Johnson smacked a fastball for his sixth home of the season. Billy Butler drove in a run for KC in the third, and the bottom of the inning, Spilborghs reach on a fielders choice, stole second, and scored on a Johnson single. End of three, three – two, Royals

In the fourth, the Country tied the game when Erdos singled, stole second, and scored on a McCurdy single, but the Royals pulled ahead when Billy Butler hit a single after a double from Olivo. In the 7th, the Country used the stolen base for a 3rd time to set up a run. The Royals again pulled ahead by a run in the ninth on back to back to back singles. Aaron Heilman closed out the game for the Royals

Final score: 5-4, Royals

I'm frustrated. Not with the game, but with my team. I've got young guys that have been training up and are major-league ready, but they're never going to overtake my starters, who also keep improving. Maybe the game should do something like after age 30, you cannot improve?

Anyway, I don't have a "baseball reason," but to keep things fun for myself, I'm demoting Spilborghs, Fields, and Dan Johnson to the minors, and bringing in graybar players. I'll trade those guys for cash or other players after this year's draft. I'm on the fence with Orlando Hudson and Kemp. Hudson because, even though the guy is really fun to play, I've got a young guy (DeVore - FDCCCC - defense is on the cusp of a B) that I'm enjoying watching develop. I don't know why I'm bored with Kemp - I've hardly played the guy, and he's still pretty young - I think he's 26. For some reason, I want to play Clay Timpner (DDBDCD), who's older, or Joe Thirston (DDBDCD, first ball hitter), who's much older, over Kemp (CBBCEF).

I also went and started a new expansion mode, which I do from time to time. Unlike the Country, this team actually had enough decent players that I'd only pickup pitchers as initial FAs. I haven't played a game yet, and won't, unless my change in Country players fails to make this more fun.

I think/hope that with my changes, the combination of developing players, longtime backups who are now getting a "shot," and enough developed players to carry the team (Cust, Ryan Braun, Erdos) sometimes, will jump start the excitement again.

So far so good. I'm enjoying playing without all my "big boppers" in the lineup, and am especially enjoying Kemp. Earlier, I set up my "intro" for my next team, and I'm definitely putting that off (for now) to stick with the Country, but I think you'll enjoy the following excerpt so I'm releasing it now:

ERISA Dude: Interesting… Okay, I'm in - when do I get to select my players?

Owner: um… it's kind of a funny story. We actually had a Mr. P picked out and signed as GM. He put together the roster, played a few games – the whole exhibition season, actually. Then, he said he was bored and just wanted to work on creating players.

ERISA Dude: you mean my team is already selected, I don't even have exhibition games to test my players, and I wasn't even your first choice?!?

Owner: well… Mr. P just give us the incentive to try to pull you away from the Country, but you were our top choice from the start! [BACKGROUND CONVERSATION OVERHEARD: Mr. Owner, remember, we also spoke with dishnetkid, but he was enjoying his summers in Vancouver and was also busy overseeing a website? We contacted Zero Gibson, out in Las Vegas, but decided against it when he asked if instead of paying his salary, we could pay off his bookies? And Philliesfan actually came down for an interview, but flew right back after lunch when he couldn't find a place that would put cheese whiz on his steak sandwich? There was even some guy – remember – during the interview after you would ask him a question, instead of talking to you, he would pull out a bag of skittles and talk the bag of skittles? Something like he was totally caught off guard and did not realize there was something wrong with talking to a bag of skittles?

Owner response in background: Susan, please! I'm trying to seal the deal here!

4/27/2011: the Honeybees beat the Country, six – three, for the first time in the history of the franchises, and they did it against one of the Country's best pictures – Depablos. The Honeybees did it with solid and timely hitting and did not stop scoring, while the Country struggled against Honeybees starter Mathieson (98 EB SL – three, CH – two)

4/30/2011: It looked like Homer Bailey was going to take a loss in spite of pitching a great game against the Indians (One run on three hits with eight strikeouts through six innings) because Fausto Carmona had his wicked hard sinker Working, and had a three-hit shutout through 6-2/3 innings, but Hunter pence finally made contact with one of those sinkers and put it into the right feel fences for the game-tying homerun. The Indians immediately threatened by putting their first two batters on base, but barely escaped the inning with the help of a three – five – one double play. Bailey pitched another shutout inning before giving way to the relief staff, while Carmona continued to pitch into the ninth inning. After retiring Erdos and Cust, each for the fourth time that afternoon, he prepared to take on Braun, who was 0/3. Braun launched a 1-0 Inside change up into the upper decks of left field, to give the Country their only lead of the game – a one run lead, entering the ninth inning. Jiang, who entered in the 8th, stayed in for the 9th and gave up a lead off single to Hafner that Erdos' misplay turned into a double, and Hafner reached third on the fielders choice, but Jiang preserved the victory. Final score: two – one, Country

5/11/11: In an exciting game with five lead changes in which no team led by more than a run through the seventh inning, a big three-run seventh against country middle reliever Giron gave the Indians a seven – five win

5-18-11: When the pitching matchup of Lincecum against the Athletics Loaiza was announced, most expected a Country blowout, but the Athletics starter pitched a surprisingly strong seven innings, allowing just eight hits and surrendering one run on an RBI single from Schrager in the second inning. Unfortunately for the Athletics, Lincecum plowed through the Athletics lineup, pitching a complete game five hit shutout with nine strikeouts, as he collected his fifth win of the season. Perhaps as a testament to Lincecum's dominance, of the 22 balls put into play by the Athletics, only six made it to the outfield.

5/16 – 18: the Twins have an amazing offensive series, sweeping the Indians – game 1: 15 – 14; game 2: 9 – 2; game 3: 30 – 6

5/20/11: behind seven strong innings from Homer Bailey and two homeruns early in the game by Orlando Hudson accounting for four runs, the Country won their first game In 2011 against the powerful Yankees, who picked up Albert Pujols this off-season, six – two.

5/21/11: spot starter Pettyjohn pitched a solid 6 – 2/3 innings, allowing one run on a homerun by Albert Pujols, and recording six strikeouts while the Country's catcher McCurdy enjoyed his first multi-homer game of his career, accounting for three RBIs, and the Country took advantage of subpar pitching from Ian Kennedy, racking up five home runs and four doubles on their way to a six – one win.

5/22/11: with all their starters in gray condition, the Yankees get an amazing 6 – 1/3 innings from reliever Kyle Farnsworth (stamina 40), allowing one run in that span while Lincecum gives up solo homeruns to Puljols and Rodriguez over seven innings. The tying run for the Country is thrown out at the plate in the eighth, but a dramatic solo homerun from Orlando Hudson with two out in the ninth tie the game. Derek Jeter hits a walk off single in the bottom of the 10th and the Yankees take the final game of the series, three – two

5/27/11: in their second series against the Yankees, the Country don't come out swinging against an aging Petitt. Rather they let him the try to paint the edges and wear himself out, exiting with a 2 – 0 deficit after three innings, while Lincecum strikes out four in the first two innings, takes a one hitter into the sixth and pitches a six hit complete-game shutout with six strikeouts. 4-0

Trades & Announcements

5/30/2011: the Country and Honeybees announced a trade today.

The Country receive the Honeybees closer, Dransfeld (88 EC 2SF – one, SL – three, CB – one, PA – three), who was recently sent down to the minors, in exchange for Country relievers Andrew Brown (97 DE SL – five, CB – three, CH – five) and Oliver (92 DC CU – three, CB – three, SLV – four, VSL – four).

Said the Honeybees: while Dransfeld pitched well for us, he did lose his spot on the major-league roster, while Andrew Brown is a proven reliever who can pitch in middle relief or be a late inning guy. Oliver has been in the Country minor-league system for a long time, but has excellent movement on his pitches and we look forward to seeing what he can do for us.

Said the Country: we really liked Dransfield's pitch selection – a lot of our pitchers have had success with the palmball and the two seam fastball, so the fact that Dransfield has both of those caught our attention. As the Honeybees closer, he has dealt with pressure situations, but we think he can start in this league someday (his stamina reading is 106 – just four shy from level B) so we plan to focus on stretching him out a bit. We are sorry to see Brown go, although with our young relievers improving, his role has really shrunk. As for Oliver, he's got good stuff, but just was not able to put it together at the majors to get hitters out. Dransfild has been in the majors for most of his three years since college so he has some experience, but at age 27, he is three years younger than Brown and one year younger than Oliver.

6/1/11: Country starting pitcher Lincecum becomes the first Country starter pitcher to be named monthly MVP. For the month of May, Lincecum won four games, boasting a 0.69 ERA with 33 strikeouts.

It was also announced that the Country and Brewers struck a trade, the Country sending outfielder Ryan Spilborghs (BBACEC) to the Brewers in exchange for 2010 draft pick SS Rolls (EDDDDD).

Spilborghs, 31, was one of the oldest members on the Country, but he is practically a youngster on a Brewers team that includes 37-year-old Jermaine Dye, 38-year-old Mike Cameron and Cliff Floyd, and 36-year-old Jason Kendall. Rolls, 22, is the youngest player on the Country and the third young shortstop they picked up in two seasons – the others being DeVore (EDCCBC), who also plays second and is currently on the major-league roster, and Finnegan (DDDCCC), who gets called up often when one of the starting infielders or bench players is sent down to the minors to recover. Rolls was the top SS in the 2010 draft and will likely develop in the minors for this and next season. He could challenge for a major league bench position as a utility player as early as next season – Rolls' arm strength and fielding should go to level C pretty soon, as they are both level nine right now.

Rolls also has a "friendly" contract – three seasons at $420,000 per season.

In the 2010 draft review, about 5 position players were named as being potentially-solid players. In addition to the Country's pick, who is their backup 3b, the Country now have 3 of those players on the roster - catchers Hyatt and Dunwoodie, and now SS Rolls.
