Rockies Extend Three, Dump One
May 11th, 2005
By Zachary Bluth

The following players' contracts have been extended past the 2005 season:

3B Joey Acaccia - $2.0 million per year through 2007
RF Dustan Mohr - $1.2 million per year through 2006 ($200k pay increase)
2B Aaron Miles - $500k per year through 2006 ($200k pay increase)

In addition, the Rockies finalized a deal sending Preston Wilson to the San Diego Padres in exchange for the following players:

RP Justin Germano
CF Freddy Guzman

Germano, a 22-year old righty, has not allowed a run in 4.2 innings of MLB relief work this season and will play with the major league club. In order to make room for him, Cathaway has demoted the 22-year old Michael-Sea Morgan to AAA Colorado Springs.

Guzman has seen all but 14 at-bats between AAA and MLB thus far, going 4 for 12 in the former and 1 for 2 in the latter. Guzman is 24 and was ranked by Baseball America as one of the top 100 prospects in America, although his age is causing his stock to slip. He will start in AAA, and the Rockies will call up 22-year old left fielder Mathias MacKenzie to fill the hole left by Wilson's absence. MacKenzie has been tearing it up in AAA for the Sky Sox, batting .397 with 4 home runs in 32 games. Jorge Piedra and Bret Nunez will likely split time as the starting center fielder.

This trade all but confirms the belief that Cathaway will be looking to shed the contracts of some of the team's older players. While Wilson is only 30, his $6.3 million dollar contract was a heavy burden on the club, and the two new players combine to cost the team only $900k. Besides Todd Helton, whom Cathaway would have to be mentally ill to trade away, the next highest paid players on the Rockies are starting pitcher Denny Neagle and catcher Charles Johnson, who are 36 and 33, respectively. Will they be the next to go?

Isn't Bonds white in that game?

Must be one of the highest-overall players because he's tearing it up.

Rockies Demote Struggling Cook
May 29th, 2005
By Zachary Bluth

Following the Rockies' 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs, starting pitcher Aaron Cook was designated for assignment to the AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Cook, 26, has struggled out of the gate with a 7.24 ERA in 10 starts. After picking up a no decision in the May 28th loss to the Cubs, Michael Cathaway began to work out sending down the fourth-year right-hander. In his place, 22-year old Michael-Sea Morgan has been called up from AAA, where he was sent when the Rockies acquired Adam Loewen. Adam Bernero, whose ERA stands at 4.32 in 33.1 innings, will take over as the team's #4 starter while Morgan pitches in relief.

Cook was fairly effective in 2004, posting a 4.28 ERA in 96.2 innings. Hopefully, he will work out the kinks in AAA, and will be able to return to the major league club before the end of the year. In the meantime, Bernero will get a chance to prove himself as a full-time starter.
