Division Standings at the end of May

NL Central
1. Stampede 34-21
1. Ramblers 34-21
3. Pack 32-23
4. Shooters 27-28
5. Gorillas 24-31
6. Falcons 23-32

It was an offensive struggle for the Stampede in the month of May, scoring just 76 runs, down from 111 in April. Luckily the pitching staff that had all the experts buzzing in the pre-season showed up and only allowed 69 runs in 27 games. No one showed up more than Rex Fury who had a terrible month of April, but was able to turn it around this month and win Rookie of the month in the National League, getting 3 victories while having a very low 1.75 ERA and striking out 40. Although the Stampede had a great month going 16-11, they still weren't able to create space from the Round Rock Ramblers as they end tied for the second month in a row.

Most improved player this month: Rex Fury
Biggest let down: Simon Moon, led the league in batting average at the end of April, now is in 8th place.

Recap: Steve Screws got the start for the struggling Oklahoma City Stampede today
and pitched a solid 7 innings, even though he did give up 9 hits he was able to
limit the damage and only gave up one earned run. Relief Pitcher Ray Simpson came
in to pitch the 8th inning but gave up 2 quick hits and didn't even record an out
before being yanked by manager Mike Edmonds in a close 2-1 ball game. Edmonds
decided to go with right handed pitcher Fernando Hernandez who was just signed by
the Stampede a few weeks ago, and with runners on first and second with 0 outs
Hernandez was able to get out of the inning without allowing any runs. Edmonds
was so impressed he sent Hernandez out in the 9th to try and get his first career
save and he got it with ease to snap the Stampedes 5 game losing streak, the
longest they've ever had.

RECAP: Doug Copet got the start today in what ended up being the longest and
probably the most exciting game ever played by the Stampede. Doug Copet pitched
a great 7 innings giving up just 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 4. The San Jose
Hornets
struck first in the 7th inning scoring 1 run, but the Stampede were able
to quickly take the lead with 2 runs of their own in the 7th. In the 9th inning
Fenando Hernandez was sent to the mound to save the game with a slim 2-1 lead,
and he got the first two outs easily but with 1 out left to go in the game
Hernandez gave up a huge run to make it 2-2. The game was a pitching duel until
the 16th(yes 16th) inning when left handed pitcher Ray Simpson gave up a solo
home run to Byrnes of the Hornets to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the 16th only
two pitches were thrown, one to E.J. Florence who hit a single up the middle to
keep his now 18 game hitting streak alive, and then with Anthony Gallagher
representing the winning run in the batters box, it took just one pitch(a sinker
over the middle) to end the game as Gallagher hit an opposite field home run right
into the Stampede's bullpen.

JUNE 9th, 2008
With the first ever SMLB draft just one day away, The OKC Press caught up with the manager of the Oklahoma City Stampede Mike Edmonds to ask him about what type of player the team is looking to draft.

Reporter: Although your team is in first place in the NL Central so obviously the team is pretty good, what do you think the biggest weakness on the team is?

Edmonds: Well I think we have a big lack of speed and arm strength in the outfield, no player on our team has B speed and our center fielder Randy Gurch has E arm strength, so I think thats where teams can hurt us.

Reporter: How do you feel about the pitching staff right now? Is there any chance the team could draft another arm to stick in the pen?

Edmonds: For now I think we our fine, we have had some trouble with our bullpen in late inning situations and it has cost us some games, but I think as a young team we are just starting to figure these guys out and I think it will all work out.

Reporter: Is there any possibility that the Stampede will make any trade moves this year?

Edmonds: This year I don't think so, unless a key piece of our team goes down with an injury I don't see any chance of us making any moves this year.

Reporter: There have been rumors spreading around that the team has a strict 50 million dollar cap limit, the salary now sits at 43 million and you don't even have a minor league team set up yet, how do you think the team will change during this off-season with the salary cap obviously being a concern?

Edmonds: Well i've been told by the owner that if we reach the playoffs our salary limit for next year will go up to 55 million instead of 50 million, so I think if we can reach the playoffs that extra 5 million the owner has promisied the team will go a long way to keeping the roster the way it is now, plus adding some key players.

Reporter: Thank you for your time coach, good luck the rest of the season.

JUNE 10th, 2008
2008 SMLB Draft
In a surprising turn of events, the Stampede drafted two new pitchers in this years draft, Right hander William Sanders, and left handed submariner Andre Voyles. Owner Grant Bryant had this to say about drafting two pitchers. "We were looking for a fast moving outfielder in this years draft but we could not find one, so we felt like drafting two pitchers was the best second option, now we have plenty of depth in our bullpen." Grant Bryant was also asked about possibly trading one of these new pitchers to try and grab some much needed speed and he did not rule anything out. Wihout a minor league team, Grant Bryant said that Fernando Hernandez will still be with the team but will not play in any games and will not be on the 25 man roster until further notice.

In one of if not the biggest free agent signing of the SMLB, The San Jose Hornets(33-30) who are 2nd in the AL Central have signed left handed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez to a one year 2.4 million dollar deal. The Hornets hope having a hard throwing lefty like Gio will help them catch up to the division leading Louisville Bobcats(38-25).

I will post an update every now and then to see how this created player is doing with his team and if he is helping them or hurting them, would you all like it if I added in some more free agents like this?

The Oklahoma City Stampede have used the rest of their salary cap room to sign 22 year old Japanese superstar 2nd baseman/SS Jinya Kishi to a one year deal reportedly worth 2.3 million doillars. Kishi will come in to give SS Chase McCain some much needed rest from time to time and be brought in to pinch run. Coach Mike Edmonds have this to say about the signing, "We feel very lucky to have someone as talented as Kishi come in this late in the season to help us make a push for the playoffs, speed is something we have lacked all year so hopefully he can come in from time to time and help us win some important ball games."
