NJ Eagles Update

Image

The Eagles took the day off on September 10th. Their triumph on 9/11 vs the Red Sox (4-1 score) meant they had successfully stringed 10 Ws together. That was quickly swept under the rug as we lost 2-1 but the Eagles started a new streak with a 8-1 victory on the 13th. Cliff Lee took second place for the innings record with his start in Game 3. Subsequently, we battled the Evil Empire. On the 14th we put on a walloping - 13-0. Kershaw became tied for sixth alongside Dodger Ted Lilly for victories in a season. They both have 18 while Cliff Lee is in first with 18 back in 2012; Hernandez is currently tied for 2nd. The Empire struck back in Game 2 the following day as we fell 5-2. Finally, NJ smacked around the Yanks 11-6.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Sep. 10 to Sep. 16)

Same bat time, same bat channel. Where else do you find MLB news hot off the presses but here? Episode 3 of Players of the Week in September and the players are ticking things up a notch as they prepare for the playoffs.

Dodgers hurler Chad Billingsley punched out 9 and also won 2 games, allowing no runs for Los Angeles' NL team. Veteran journeyman Lyle Overbay has done well since landing in San Diego - this week he batted .444/2/11.

ImageImage

On the AL side we see reliable veterans Miguel Cabrera (Detroit) and Ryan Dempster (Texas) chipping in - .409/4/16 and 1 W/10 K, respectively.

ImageImage

Things as usual here and as we move on through the fall, we'll keep you up-to-date on the latest around the majors.

NJ Eagles Update

Image

The Eagles resumed play on the 18th after a day off on the 17th. After a 5-4 win over the Orioles, Felix Hernandez tied Cliff Lee for wins in a season at 20 - Lee did that back in 2012 with Philly. We picked up two Ws in a row on 9/19 and 9/20 - 5-1 and 11-3. Kershaw moved up to third along with Lincecum/Verlander/Weaver for the wins record with 19 victories this season. On the 21st the team grabbed win #5 in a row against Toronto, 2-1. Matt Moore tied for 3rd with Kershaw and the others after a start on the 22nd - New Jersey won 12-4. To finish up the week, NJ beat the Jays 5-1.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Sep. 17 to Sep. 23)

Another week, another series of valuable players who helped guide their team down the path to victory. Let's see who impressed in this third week of September.

Milwaukee outfielder Norichika Aoki tore up pitching with a .522/2/8 stat line. Robinson Cano also smashed NL hurlers - .550/3/6 for the D'Backs.

ImageImage

Chicago's Brent Morel has manned the hot corner and also slugged his way to a .474 average, 4 homers, and 8 ribbies. New Jersey first baseman/outfielder Chris Davis has been a main power source for his team in 2016 but just this week he batted .391/4/7.

ImageImage

One more week left in September and then we're off to the postseason. More info to come on the best in baseball next week.

NJ Eagles Update

Image

Coming off a solid week, the Eagles defeated the Orioles 4-2. Cliff Lee claimed the record for innings pitched in a season with 217.2 (Felix had 215.2 in 2012). They won the next day, 7 to 3. We dropped game three 3-2 and then Tampa Bay beat us 4-2. Afterwards, NJ defeated the Rays 5-0 and King Felix overtook Cliff's innings thrown record. Lee was back in first despite a 4-1 loss - he now had 222.2 to Hernandez's 219.2. In the final game of the series, NJ was victorious 9-3 and was able to split it 2-2. Many of the starters were inching closer to holding records. Felix was 6th among SP for win % at about 84.6%, while Greg Maddux is in 1st with 90.5% with Atlanta in 1995. Cliff Lee was 4th for ERA in a season at 2.30 behind Hernandez at 2.09, who leads and is trailed by the White Sox' Chris Sale (2.17 in '14). Kershaw was in 2nd place for wins in a season at 20 alongside Cliff Lee (who did it in 2012) - Felix leads with 22 this year.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Sep. 17 to Sep. 23)

Last update for Players of the Week before September ends. Let's go:

Chase Utley of the Angels (.625/2/4) and Blake Carter of the Eagles (.391/3/6) are on hot streaks in the AL.

Image

Mets cornerstone David Wright has bashed 3 home runs plus 8 runs driven in and a .536 average. On the other side of the diamond, Astros starter Tim Stauffer has made waves with an awesome 22 strikeouts as well as 1 win and a 0.63 earned run average.

ImageImage

That's all for September, hope you enjoyed a glance around the MLB and its most valuable players week-by-week. Next is October and the playoffs!

2016 Playoff Preview

Image

The postseason begins in October. Here we are, the moment all baseball fans have awaited this whole season. The MLB's top clubs compete for the World Series trophy and the honor of being the World Champions of baseball. It all starts with the first round - the Divisional Series - which we will preview. Which teams do you think will advance to the LCS?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Image VS Image

The 91-71 Padres captured the NL Wild Card and it was mostly due to their division-leading 915 runs/1685 hits in support of their pitching (4.94 ERA, *136 HR, *1228 SO, *601 BB). Notables include Wade Davis (*14-7, 4.92 ERA, *123 K, *2 CG, *13 QS), Rickie Weeks (.289, 36 2B, 11 3B, 9 HR, *125 RBI, *100 R, *28 SB, 62 XBH), Chris Denorfia (*.290, *180 H, 24 2B, 11 3B, *21 HR, 87 RBI, 23 SB, 56 XBH), David DeJesus (.268, *40 2B, *19 3B, 10 HR, 86 RBI, *69 XBH), and Luke Gregerson (0-2, 4.84 ERA, *16/27 SV, 79 K).

The 99-63 Phillies, best in the NL, will take them on, for 5 games. Their 4.56 ERA and 763 runs allowed, as well as .288 avg., 954 runs scored, and 1714 hits lead the NL East. Their main pieces include Kyle Kendrick (*13-7, 4.28 ERA, *3 SHO/CG, *139 K, *13 QS), Jimmy Rollins (*.363, *205, *57 2B, *17 3B, 13 HR, 120 RBI, *135 R, 25 SB, *87 XBH), Ryan Howard (.310, 13 2B, *42 HR, *144 RBI), Carlos Ruiz (.290, 20 2B, 15 HR, 101 RBI), Cody Ross (.284, 32 2B, 19 HR, 108 RBI), and Matt Keller (2-5, 3.81 ERA, 22/24 SV, 56 K).

Image VS Image

The Dodgers ranked 2nd in the NL at a 94-68 record. Their .285 batting average, 4.67 ERA, and 780 runs allowed are best in the NL West. Key players are: Matt Kemp (.339, 21 2B, 10 HR, 61 RBI), Alfredo Aceves (4.27 ERA, 4-3, *22/27 SV, 43 K), Hanley Ramirez (*.320, *184 H, *37 2B, *26 3B, 12 HR, 77 RBI, *98 R, *32 SB, *75 XBH), Jered Weaver (*3.55 ERA, *13-5, *3 SHO/CG, *203 K, .234 BAA, *18 QS), Andre Ethier (.305, 28 2B, 17 HR, 103 RBI, 47 XBH), and Adrian Gonzalez (.279, 22 2B, *26 HR, *132 RBI).

After 24 years of futility, Pittsburgh finally made it back to the playoffs this year. Their 90-72 record was tops in the NL Central - and although their 4.23 ERA and 542 walks was best in their division, their .258 average, 699 runs, and 1405 hits was the worst. Remarkable parts of the roster: Matt Hague (*.287, 14 2B, 22 HR, 83 RBI, 41 XBH), Andrew McCutchen (.268, *34 2B, 8 3B, 15 HR, *109 RBI, 17 SB, *57 XBH), Aaron Crow (4.31 ERA, 2-6, *26/27 SV, 72 K), Alex Presley (.272, *165 H, 19 2B, *19 3B, 9 HR, 75 RBI, *103 R, *29 SB, 47 XBH), Ian Kennedy (*3.43, *15-6, 2 SHO/CG, *181 K, .224 BAA, *18 QS), and Travis Snider (.270, 9 2B, *23 HR, 71 RBI).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image

Image VS Image

Los Angeles' American League team were a powerhouse in their conference. Despite an awesome group of sluggers - likely AL MVP Albert Pujols (*.390, *225 H, *63 2B, 12 3B, *50 HR, *190 RBI, *135 R, *125 XBH), Kendry Morales (.258, 28 HR, 116 RBI), Carl Crawford (.283, 48 2B, 18 3B, 9 HR, 114 RBI, *22 SB, 75 XBH), and Rafael Furcal (.302, 40 2B, *28 3B, 6 HR, 88 RBI 19 SB), among others - who had the best average, hits, runs scored, and homers in the division, it was their mediocre pitching (5.13 team ERA; 136 K was worst in AL West) that probably lead them to a wild card even with a 94-68 record. They were one game short of the AL West title. Some highlights of the pitching staff: Joel Hanrahan (3.65 ERA, 2-3, *24/25 SV, 58 K), Carl Pavano (*14-4, 4.09 ERA, 1 CG/SHO, 119 K), and Dan Haren (*14-2, 3.70 ERA, *3 SHO/CG, *134 K).

4 years after entering the MLB as an expansion team, the Eagles have won 1 World Series championship and are seeking their second. They trampled over their opponents to a 117-45 record - no one in the majors was better. The statistics show that their 2.57 ERA, 410 runs, 1167 hits, 95 homers, 1349 strikeouts, and 349 walks allowed were first in the tough AL East. And how about the offense - .278, 861 R, 191 HR. The most impressive talents on NJ: Cliff Lee (2.30 ERA, 15-9, 4 SHO, *14 CG, 205 K, .227 BAA, 23 QS), Chris Davis (.260, 21 2B, 29 HR, 101 RBI, 50 XBH), Felix Hernandez (2.09 ERA, *22-4, *6 SHO, 11 CG, .225 BAA, 17 QS), Dustin Ackley (*.321, *192 H, 18 2B, *16 3B, 72 RBI, *17 SB), Clayton Kershaw (2.57 ERA, 20-4, 147 K, .222 BAA, 17 QS), Hunter Pence (.296, 31 2B, 22 HR, 98 RBI), Blake Carter (.273, 25 2B, *41 HR, *134 RBI, *101 R, *71 XBH), Aroldis Chapman (*1.64 ERA, 2-0, *41/41 SV, 72 K, *.182 BAA), and Evan Longoria (.293, 32 2B, 29 HR, 105 RBI, 68 XBH).

Image VS Image

Cleveland picked up the AL Central title with a record of 93-69. Their 4.59 team earned run average and 1080 strikeouts were lowest in their division but their .284 average and 1670 hits were highest. The Tribe's leading performers: Shin-Soo Choo (.288, 31 2B, 12 3B, 10 HR, 96 RBI, 17 SB), Michael Brantley (.292, *41 2B, *22 3B, 16 HR, 98 RBI, *108 R, *19 SB, *79 XBH), Adam Wainwright (5.51 ERA, 14-9, 132 K, 15 QS), Rafael Perez (2.95 ERA, 2-3, *40/41 SV, 46 K, .214 BAA), Ubaldo Jimenez (*3.77 ERA, 16-7, *2 CG, *166 K, .238 BAA, *19 QS), Asdrubal Cabrera (.271, 20 2B, 12 3B, 10 HR, 96 RBI, 17 SB), and Jason Kipnis (*.333, *188 H, 35 2B, 16 3B, 14 HR, *122 RBI, 13 SB).

Oakland just edged the Angels by a smidge for the AL West crown. The club went 95-67, and their .267 average, 824 R, 149 HR, and 174 stolen bags was supreme in their division. On the pitching side, it was up-and-down - 4.02 earned run average was number 1 and 1729 hits given up was at bottom of the West. The chief proponents of the A's team: Jonathan Papelbon (*1.88 ERA, 3-1, *28/30 SV, 68 K), Daric Barton (*.305, 27 2B, 9 3B, 18 HR, 124 RBI, 54 XBH), Chris Young (.285, 27 2B, 16 3B, *31 HR, 106 RBI, *108 R, *74 XBH), Joe Saunders (*4.88 ERA, *14-8, *1 CG, 103 K, 14 QS), Jose Reyes (.287, *176 H, *36 2B, *24 3B, 10 HR, 70 RBI, *49 SB, 70 XBH), Yoenis Cespedes (.294, 19 2B, 30 HR, *130 RBI, 57 XBH), and Cole Hamels (4.01 ERA, 13-4, *1 SHO/CG, *145 K, *15 QS).

Apparently in Year 5 he still hasn't accumulated enough at-bats to not be rookie-eligible anymore..

Anyway, got a half-day tomorrow at school so the work on the NLDS/ALDS will continue and once that's complete, we'll move onto the games! And as you could expect the NLCS/ALCS will follow the same formula. With the way I'm writing it, we might be at the World Series or even after that by the week's end. :)

(0-0) Eagles vs Angels (0-0): ALDS Game 1

The Angels jumped out to a 3-run advantage by the 2nd in Game 1, due to RBI singles by Utley, Pujols, and Crawford. NJ was stagnant against the hot-headed Carlos Zambrano, but they picked it up in the 7th. Star outfielder Blake Carter brought them back from the dead with a solo blast 439 ft to center. The Eagles continued the rally in the 8th and it was Brandon Phillips who put them on top with a 3-run homer, also to center field. Felix Hernandez calmed down after a bit of trouble in the first few innings and was able to finish up the game with a one-run lead.

Player of the Game: F.Hernandez - CG, 3-run outing + B.Phillips - Come-from-behind 3-R HR in the 8th

Final Score:
Eagles: 4
Angels: 3

W - F.Hernandez (1-0) | L - Zambrano (0-1)
HR: B.Phillips (1), B.Carter (1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Ackley: 2-4, R
B.Phillips: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI, R
B.Carter: 1-4, HR
Trout: 2-3, R
F.Hernandez: 9 IP, 10 H, 5 K, 3 ER

----------------------------------------------
Image
C.Crawford: 2-4, RBI
Pujols: 2-4, RBI
Utley: 2-4, 2B, RBI
Zambrano: 8 IP, 8 H, 0 K, 4 ER, 2 HR

------------------------------------------
*After his heroic 3-run homer in Game 1, "Dat Dude BP" improved his error resistance from C up to a B.

Hunter Pence's homer in the 4th was the calm before the storm, to be metaphorical. Carl Pavano and Cliff Lee traded scoreless innings to start but Game 2 was broken open in the 5th. Zieno, Ackley, and Saunders singled and Carter drove the former two in with a two-bagger. Pence grounded out but Saunders was able to cross home plate and Carter advanced to 3rd. Davis capped it off with a 2-R bomb and Jordan Williams finally relieved Pavano. The Angels tried to crawl back in it in the 9th with RBI singles by Todd Frazier and Kendry Morales, but it was not to be as Cliff Lee pitched all 9 innings with just two runs allowed.
