I wonder how the other rotations are looking right now. And how has that Chamberlain/Lincecum trade looking now..

The Lincecum pitches well for me and he pitches more often then the pitcher I gave up for him, but he was a good pitcher.

Harden has made me not regret trading Chamberlain, but I'll try to see how many saves he has for the Giants

7/12 – 14/2010: Iowa City Country at Toronto Blue Jays

Game one: Country Depablos (94 DB SL – four, CB – four, VSL – three) versus Blue Jays Burnett (98 DA _____ – five, CH – four, HSK – four)

Former catcher/second baseman Junge is facing the Country for the first time since his trade for minor-league shortstop Finnigan earlier this season. He played second base and batted second for the Blue Jays.

Burnett was in pink condition and had the best movement on his pitches of any pitcher the Country faced this season. Depablos, in good condition, matched Burnett and both starters entered the 8th inning with shutouts intact.

The Country had threatened several times, leaving about four runners in scoring position, as each time Burnett buckled down and induced week groundouts or strikeouts, but in the eighth, after Dan Johnson doubled and moved to third on a fielders choice, Spilborghs blooped a ball over the shortstop's outstretched glove, allowing Johnson to score. That would prove to be the lone run of the game, and the Country won 1 – 0.

Comments:
both pitchers pitched complete games – Burnett threw 88 pitches, striking out four while Depablos threw 64 stitches, striking out five. Junge was 2/4 - the only Bluejay with more than one hit, and was the final out of the game

Game two: Country James (95 CB SL – four, CH – three) at Blue Jays Wayne (83 EC CU – two, SL – three, CB – three)

The Country pushed a run through in the first when Spilborghs led off a single, stole second, and came home on Erdos single. The Blue Jays tied the game when Scott Rolan led off with a double followed by several base hits, and took the lead, 2-1

In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Jays put runners at second and third with one out, but the eighth and ninth batters struck out and popped out to the catcher. The Blue Jays threatened, again in the fifth, but stranded a runner in scoring position.

The Blue Jays young starter pitched a strong six innings, tiring and the sixth, but coming out to start the seventh, Hudson led off with a two – two double just inside the right-field line and the Blue Jays went to relief pitcher Camp (92 CE SL – two, CH –1), who struck out Cust before inducing a deep fly out from Pence, before Fields squeezed a ground ball past the second baseman for a game-tying RBI.

With the eighth starting tied two – two, Huisman led off by slicing an opposite field double down the left-field line, but even though Camp hung a few offspeed pitches, the Country were unable to take iadvantage.

Camp came out to start the ninth inning and after hanging a slider to Hudson, he hung a curveball to Cust, who put it over the centerfield fence giving the Country one run lead. Harden started the bottom of the 9th and closed it out uneventfully with the help of a six – four – three doubleplay.

Final score: three – two, Country

Game three: Country Rijo (97 DB SL – four, CB – three, FO – three) at Blue Jays Guillen (93 CB CU – two, CB – two, CH – two)

The Country had their lineup set up play against the Blue Jays left-handed starter, but didn't take advantage until the fifth inning when Fields hot a solo home run over the right-field fence. The score remained unchanged until the top of the 9th when Spilborghs singled, stole second, and came home on a Kemp single.

Final score: two – zero, Country

7/15 – 17/2010: Iowa City Country versus Detroit Tigers

This is the first time the Country play the Tigers in 2010, and it is the last series before the All-Star break. This season, the Tigers added Vladimir Guerrero (BADACD) to a potent lineup that includes Curtis Granderson, Miguel Cabrera (CADECC), Placedo Pollanco (BBEEBB), Carlos Guillen (CBB CDD), Ivan Rodriguez (DBFAAC), and bench player Coco Crisp.

Game one: Country Bailey (94 DB 2SF – three, HSL – two, DCB – four) versus Tigers Rolls (86 DC SL – three, CU – one, CB – three, FO – one)

Granderson took Bailey deep on his first pitch – a two seam fastball. Josh Fields put the Country ahead the bottom of the inning when he hit a towering two run homerun with Cust on first. The following inning, McCurdy hit his second homerun of the season. Granderson led off the third with his second home run in a row. In the bottom of the third, Spilborghs singled, stole second, and scored on a Cust double down right-field line. Pence drove Cust home with a single, and gave the Country a five – two lead entering the fourth.

Guillen homered In the sixth, but the Country put three more runs on the board against a tiring reliever, Kenny Rogers (90 FD SL – two, CB – one, CH – one, SK – three) who served up a three run homerun to Jack Cust. A McCurdy RBI single extended the Country's lead to 9 – 3 entering the eighth.

Carlos Guillen drove in a run and put runners at first and third with one out against Country reliever Jang. At that point, the Country brought in Harden who collected the final five outs.

Final score: nine – four, Country (Jack Cust missed the cycle by a triple)

Game 2: Lincecum (100 DA 2SF-3, SL-4, DCB-4, CH-4) versus Kenny Rogers (90 FD SL – two, CB – one, CH – one, SK – three)

For the second game in a row, Granderson led off with a home run. The Country matched it right away when Huisman, batting 2nd, singled home Spilborghs, who led off the inning with a double off the centerfield fence. Two outs later, Hunter Pence practically dug a fastball out of the homeplate dirt and put it into the upper deck of the left-field bleachers for a two run homerun. Three – one, Country.

The Country extended their lead in the third one Spilborghs led off the inning with his second double over the center fielder's head, moved to third, and then scored on fielders choices. The following inning, Hunter Pence led off with his 30th homerun of the season. Five – one, Country

In the fifth, the Tigers first through fifth batters bunched several singles and scored two runs. Neither team scored again.

Final score: five – three, Country

Comments: this was Lincecum's 10th win and Harden's 28th save, while Pence hit his 29th and 30th homeruns

Game three: Country Grindell (95 EB CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – three) versus Tigers Verlander (100 DA CB – two, CH – two)

For the first time this series, Granderson failed to hit a leadoff homerun and the Tigers failed to score in the first inning

Pence broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence. The Country extended their lead on consecutive softly hit singles from Huisman, McCurdy, Spilborghs, Erdos, and a fielders choice from Pence after a Cust single loaded the bases. End of five, four – zero, Country

An eighth inning two run home run by Pence, and solo shots from Dan Johnson and Huisman gave the Country a formidable eight – zero lead entering the ninth.

Andrew Brown, pitching his third inning of relief, give up a one-out solo homerun to Jones that just cleared the left-field fence, but closed out the game, earning his first save of the year.

Final score: eight – one, Country

Comments: this was Grindell's seventh win, and it was impressive, as he shut out the powerful Tigers through six innings, allowing six hits and striking out two. Curtis Granderson and Miguel Cabrera where hitless in a combined eight at-bats today

The 2010 All-Star game was played today. Aside from Josh Fields – the lone Country player who was voted in as a starter, several other players were also named. Orlando Hudson, who fell to third place after the Dan Uggla trade brought Uggla into the American League, and Spilborghs, who was the fourth outfielder in voting were also on the roster. Jack Cust, leading the league in home runs and winner of last year's the Triple Crown is on the roster even though he never appeared in the votes and the same can be said for Hunter Pence. The Country may have the most pictures on the staff, though none our starters. Short middle reliever Jiang (1.83 era), and short relievers Andrew Brown and Harden are on the team.

All-Star game: Millwood (95 CB 2SF – two, CU – three, CB – three, CH – two) versus National League Carpenter (95 FB HSL – five, DCB – four, SP – three)

AL starting lineup: Curtis Granderson, Derek Jeter, Mauer, Konerko, Fields, Sizemore, Uggla, Damon

NL starting lineup: Rollins, Crawford, Pujols , Holiday, _______, Andrew Jones, Martin, Wiggington

The Dodgers Andrew Jones hit a solo homerun over the left-field fence in the second inning

Uggla led off with a double for the American League in the top the 6th, and made it to third-base, but was ultimately stranded at third, but in the bottom half of the inning, a Puljols double brought in another NL run.

That would be all the offense in the game, as the NL beat the AL two – zero.

TRADE REPORT - COUNTRY ORIOLES

NOTE: I'm posting this out of order, since it is more like "late breaking news;" game recaps between the all-star game and this trade will come later

7/27/2010: Country – Orioles trade

The Country and the Orioles have announced a trade in which the Country received Orioles rookie backup catcher Hyatt (GFFDED, clutch-four, great catcher), sending the Orioles Country minor-league reliever Buchanan (92 DC CU – four, SL – three, CB – three, FO – three, good pick off) and minor-league outfielder Ryan Sweeney (CDCDEFG, throwing – two, baserunning – two).

Hyatt has been on the Orioles major league roster since his selection in the draft, but has not started a game. Ryan Sweeney was a starter for a brief period of time in 2008, but has largely been a bench player. He did not appear on last year's major league roster until the September roster expansions. He has not appeared in a major league game this season, seemingly falling behind Timpner and Thurston on the depth charts, not to mention newly re acquired Josh Hamilton. Buchanan has been in and out of the major league roster this season, as the Country have had trouble finding a player who can consistently pitch 2-3 good innings when the team is ahead (or behind) by a lot of runs.

Said the Country: "we thought Hyatt was a very intriguing player. He really needs to work on his offense, but he has an ability to keep pitchers calm and help them go further into games. A catcher with that ability does not come around very often, and as you know, our starters have often had trouble getting past the sixth inning, so we thought it worthwhile to check him out. We absolutely gave up some quality players to get him, but they are not players we will miss from the major league roster. Also, we pride our team on the amount of depth we have, but we actually do not have a catcher in our minor league system, so this keeps with our system of trying to make things competitive internally at every position."

A Country source who asked to remain anonymous said that the Country has been keeping tabs on Hyatt, and, although they never formally requested a trade, at several times they sent out feelers involving a trio of players including Josh Hamilton, but the Orioles were not interested. Things seemed to change, as they often do, after the All-Star Game as we get closer to the trading deadline. He also commented that while the Country traded good minor league talent, they did not unload the player they view as their best "trading chip," 2b Borland (CDEECE), a player with decent offense who will not be an unrestricted FA for another 4-1/2 seasons, but who was unable to improve his arm strength or minimize his errors through training, causing the Country to lose interest in keeping him.

Said the Orioles: "we have high hopes for Hyatt and we're sorry to see him go, but in addition to our starter, Ramon Hernandez (DCEEEED), we have two minor league catchers with statistics similar to Hyatt's, and the ability to get a pitcher with Buchanan's repertoire of pitches was hard to ignore. Right now, Sweeney will stay in the minors, but he could challenge sometime this year for starting role and if not now, then he will compete to replace the experienced Jay Payton next spring.

Analysts agree that the Orioles made the right move in consummating this trade, dealing "long-term potential talent" for "current talent with potential." If Hyatt ever turns into a major league backstop, then the trade will be worthwhile for the Country; otherwise, the criticism would be that the Country may have found better trade targets for these players.

I think it's a good move. Trading for long-term potential with players who are more-or-less depth right now isn't too bad an idea.

I have a feeling with practice, Hyatt will turn out really good.

I appreciate the comment. I felt that, if I was going to get him, it was important that I get him now, so I could use my level 3 power training on him and maybe bring him up when rosters expand to up his contact (it'll increase every game he gets a base hit). As the season gets to a close, I will definitely want to invest in level 3 pitching stamina equipment - I haven't decided whether to invest in defense or power (again) for the position players. Power might not be an option if my current power bat continues through the season's end - I will only buy level 3 equipment, except for the silver ring that makes everything level 2 and the hot dog.

I think he's well worth the risk - with those blue abilities to go along with better batting attributes and improved fielding, he could be a top-of-the-line catcher. It might take a while though, I hope he's young. I think him progressing will be an interesting development going forward.

The clutch-4 really can help overcome poor contact. I think if I can get him from GF to FE by the end of next season (2011), he might be a viable player the season after (2012). Numerically, his stats are 3 53 4 8 7 9. I don't know how realistic it is to go from 53 to 85 in 1-1/2 seasons. Especially if I don't have level 3 equipment next season.

He's 21, and his contract is for 5 years. Would've been nice if it was 6. While I am hoping he will be competitive in his 3rd year, he's young enough that I can wait longer.

For me, it will. Not sure how I'd blog about it, other than saying "Hyatt upped his X to Y." Not quite a "riveting read"!

Forgot to mention, at least he's already at a level 2 trajectory. For some reason, I find it annoying to have traj practice.

Well interesting as in how he performs when he gets a starting job, and the course of his career I guess you could say.

Nice to see you've got him under contract for a while though.

7/22 – 23/2010: Iowa City Country at Charlotte Honeybees

The Country and Honeybees met six times so far, with the Country winning all six, but since their last meeting, the Honeybees traded for SS Chris Gomez (DEFCCD) from the Pirates and two pictures from the Astros – Great Romero (98 __ SL – two, CB - one, CH – three) and Brandon Back (93 FB 2SF – two, SL – three, CB – two, CH – three), giving up pitcher Christian (92 FC SL – three, CB – one, KN – two) to the Astros and catcher Lomasney (EEEDED) to the Pirates

Game one: Country Lincecum (100 DA 2SF – three, SL – four, DCB – four, CH – four) at Honeybees Leon (93 DC CU – two, SL – two, CB – four)

The Honeybees' pitcher had excellent command of his curveball, and the Country stranded runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, but finally pushed a run across when Fields hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. Lincecum, in the meantime, was overpowering and had a one hitter after four innings, the lone hit being a bloop single from former Country player Chiaffredo.

Spilborghs doubled in a run in the fifth, which was fortunate because in the bottom half inning, with runners at first and second, the honeybees capture double off the right-field wall bringing in a run, but Lincicum was able to and the ending with a two – one lead

In the sixth, after striking out and just having a poor day at the plate, Dan Johnson hit a solid two run home run over the left centerfield fence. In the bottom half of the inning, the Honeybees showed excellent two-out hitting and pushed two more runs across the plate. End of six, four – three, Country

In the seventh, Huisman drove in Spilborghs, and Huisman scored on a Pence sacrifice fly. The Honeybees came right back with back to back one out doubles. Six – four, Country

In the eighth, the Country seemed to put away the game when Spilborghs hit an opposite field three run homerun, and the Country took a nine – four lead into the 9th.
Final score: nine – four, Country

Comments: the normally stationary Pence stole two bases today

Game two: Country Rijo (97 SL – four, CB – three, FO – three) at Honeybees Bennett (93 GB SL – two, CB - one, CH – two)

Hudson doubled home snowboards, but the country stranded a runner at third. In the second, Huisman singled, stole second, and came home on a billboards single. With two outs in the third, A two run homer from fields Preceded an RBI double from Huisman And another two run homerun from McCurdy, given the country a seven – zero lead after three

Another RBI single from Spilborghs in the fifth and a solo homerun from Pence in the sixth gave the Country 9 – 0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, at which point Josh Fields was replaced by Shawn Riggins for defensive purposes

The Honeybees avoided a shout out when former Country outfielder Hoffman hit a towering solo hr, and that would be the last score of the game, as the Country won 9 – 1.

7/24 – 25/2010: Iowa City Country at Cleavland Indians

The Country have one 13 of 14 games so far against their intra-division rivals, but the Indians made two trades since their last meeting with the Country – picking up second baseman Aaron Hill (DBCECD) from the Blue Jays and Jorge Posada (BAFDDC) from the Dodgers. The Indians gave up backup second baseman Cabrera (DDECAB) for Hill and top flight starter Ben Sheets (96 CA HSL – two, DCB – five, CH – three) for Posada.

Game one: Country Grindell (94 EB CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – four) at Indians Sowers (92 EB SL – three, CH – two)

Grady Sizemore led off the bottom of the inning with a homerun. The Country seized the lead in the top of the second when Dan Johnson hit a two run homerun, pulling an outside fastball over the right centerfield fence. Their lead did not last long, as Grindell gave up a leadoff double to Aaron Hill, a short single to Great Kennedy, and then allowed Hill to score the tying run on a DeLucci double-play ball to 2d.

The Country scored again in the third when Spilborghs, who recently increased his power rating to level B, hit an opposite field shot that barely cleared the right-field fence. After Grindell finally shut down the Indians without allowing a run, the Country immediately threatened, putting runners at second and third, but were unable to push a man across until Kemp came to the plate with two outs and blooped a single over third-base. When Grindell closed out the bottom half the inning with the aid of a double play, the Country lead four – two

In the fifth, while Sowers used his slider more and kept the Country offense off-balance, Sizemore hit his second home of the day, pummeling a hard sinker. Four – three, Country

In the seventh, the Country stranded a runner at third. The Indians, meanwhile, immediately put runners at first and second against reliever Andrew Brown, at which time the Country brought in Broxton against DeLucci (EEE), who grounded into a four – five – three double-play before Broxton induced an inning-ending popout to the catcher.

Jiang pitched a solid eighth inning against the Indians most dangerous hitters, and then
in the top of the ninth, Dan Johnson, who is been on a tear recently, hit his second home run of the game. Harden was brought in to protect the five – three lead, which he did, striking out two in the process.

Comments: this was Grindell's eighth win and Harden's 29th save. Grindell struggled through his five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and tiring after throwing only 45 pitches. Brown, Broxton, and Jiang were excellent in relief, earning "holds."

Game two: Country Bailey (94 DB 2SF – three, HSL – three, DCB – four) at Indians Westbrook (93 CA CU – two, CB – three, CH – three , HSK – four)

In this pitchers duel, the Country broke through in the third inning when Hudson, who is batting leadoff in place of the injured Spilborghs , doubled and scored on an Erdos base hit. When Bailey closed out the third inning with Travis Hafner watching a called strike three, the Country lead one – zero

Although West brook was pitching well, it seemed that the Country were starting to key on his changeup, as they were continually driving those pitches deep into the outfield. In the fourth, after Cust singled off of a changeup, Kemp seemed to be looking changeup, got one, and homered over the left field fence. In the bottom of the fourth, the Indians Dellucci (EEE) approached the plate with runners at first and second and two out, and promptly belted a 0 – 2 seam fastball over the right field fence for a game tying home run

Two innings later, Pence gave his team the lead with a solo homerun to right field and in the 9th, Josh Fields hit his 41st home run of the season. The Indians scored a run in the 9th, but were unable to retie the game.

Final score: five – four, Country

The weekly MVP
was announced and Ryan Spilborghs was one of the players named. For the week ending 7 – 18 – 2010, Spilborghs hit 438 with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, and numerous stolen bases. Jorge Posada was the other AL player named.

7/26 – 28/2010: Iowa City Country versus Toronto Blue Jays

The Country have won eight of nine meetings this season, but since meeting the Blue Jays last, the Jays have been more of a seller than a buyer, trading away second baseman Aaron Hill for defensive second baseman Cabrera (DDECAB).

Game one: Country Stratton (88 DC SL – three, CB – four, FO – three, SHU – three) versus Blue Jays Lowry (90 DA SL – three, CB – two, CH – three)

In the first inning, the Blue Jays took advantage of their speedy lineup, leading off with two singles and ultimately scoring a run. The Country tied it up in the second on doubles from Cust and Johnson, took the lead when Erdos, batting seventh with Huisman batting second, singled Johnson home, and later that same inning, Hudson singled home Kemp. Three – one, Country

In the third, Dan Johnson extended the Country's lead with a two run home run over the centerfield fence off of a fastball up in the zone. In the fourth, Matt Kemp hit his fifth home run of the season, and later that same inning, when the Blue Jays failed to end the inning as a result of an error on their shortstop, Cust came to the plate and promptly hit a three run homer, giving the Country a nine – one lead and triggering an influx of defensive replacements.

The Country began the sixth inning with a slew of defensive replacements and garbage time reliever Oliver on the mound. Oliver was able to record two outs, but had to exit the sixth after allowing five Blue Jays to score. Andrew Brown came in and stopped the bleeding. The Country bunched up several singles the bottom half of the inning and a second error on the Blue Jays SS allowed a run to score. A Riggins RBI single extended the Country's lead to 11 – 6 entering the seventh.

Jiang then pitched the eighth and ninth, allowing two singles in the eighth, but striking out six in his appearance.

Final score: 11 – 6, Country .

Game two: Country James (95 CB SL – four, CH – three) versus Blue Jays Guillen (93 FB CU – two, CB – two, CH – two)

It seems that journeyman picture Chuck James, in his third season with the Country, has regained his spot as the number six man in the rotation, beating out 2009 draft pick Pettijohn. James was a starter in 2008, but lost his spot to Bourgeois 2009. Boirgeois was traded one of the players traded to the Giants in exchange for Tim Lincecum

Final score: five – four, Country

Game three: Country Rijo (97 DB SL – four, CB – three, FO – three) versus Blue Jays Sabathia (97 BA SLV – five, CH – four)

Spilborghs and Hudson swapped positions in the lineup, with Spilborghs batting third and Hudson batting leadoff. Spilborghs drives in the tying run in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the eighth

Final score: three – two, Country

    Rijo: 4 IP, 6H, 3K, R
    Uchiyama: 3 IP, 4H, K, R
    Brown (W): 2 IP, 0H, K

    Sabathia: 8 IP, 10 H, K, 3 R

Odd fact: The Blue Jays first baseman fielded seven balls, their second baseman six, while the left side of their infield fielded only two balls in play

The Country first baseman fielded six balls – the same number as their shortstop
