Stewart to be re-called, Brooks sent down

The Eagles manager decided to make a move today to help shore up his weary pitching staff. Tired starter Andrew Brooks was sent down to AAA to rest up while 28 year-old left-hander Cole Stewart was called up to make a start in his absence. It's likely Brooks will only need one turn away from the rotation before being ready for his next start and Stewart will get the look as a possible September or maybe even October bullpen arm.

Image

Stewart was a 2015 top draft pick by the Mets who was acquired because the team considered him to be a young arm to be placed in the rotation in the future. A scouting report notes he has a power fastball reaching almost triple-digits in top speed (98 MPH), a plus cutter (4), slurve (4), and curve (3), as well as a decent palmball (2) and 2-seamer (2). He's not impressed in 3 2/3 innings this year - 1-0 with a 9.82 ERA - hence his long stay in the minors. Although his career stats tell more of the story - in 92 innings, he has a 8-4 record with 79 K and a 5.07 earned run average. He'll get one go-around today vs Justin Verlander and Detroit in hopes that a good start will put him in consideration for a spot down the stretch and into the playoffs.

(92-38) Eagles vs Tigers: Game 2

Game two of three got off to a nice start for the Eagles. Blake Carter bashed his 32nd homer 419 ft. and we were ahead 1-0 early. Things were looking good as Ackley notched hits #997 and 998 while spot-starter Cole Stewart pitched well. He labored through some innings and eventually (the 5th) the Tigers struck. A single by Matusbara, 2B by Cabrera, and then a three-run blast deep to right by the hefty Prince made it 3-1. New Jersey would come back with a series of doubles and cut the lead to 1, however a second Prince bomb in the 7th (his 22nd) sent Stewart out of the game. With a two-run lead, Justin Verlander was able to set down the Eagles in the 8th and 9th and collect the complete game victory.

Player of the Game: Verlander - Pitched a CG + Fielder - Hit 2 homeruns with 4 RBI

Final Score:
Eagles: 2
Tigers: 4

(92-39) Eagles vs Tigers: Game 3

It feels like as each game goes by, the win margins get slimmer. That stayed true in the rubber game vs Detroit. Dustin Ackley reached base for #998 in his career and would be driven home by Carter in the 1st. Ackley's 999th hit was the only notable thing going on until the 8th. The timid Tigers offense woke up and Carlos Gomez would score on a wild pitch by Matt Moore. Moore was shaky but escaped without any more trouble. We went on to the 9th with the scoreboard showing a tie but Dustin Ackley notched his milestone 1000th hit and Longoria brought home Brandon Phillips on a pinch-hit single off Tigers starter CC Sabathia. Now that we were ahead, it was time to turn to someone to close out the game and win us the series. That man was Jonny Venters and with a 1-hit 9th he shut the door.

Player of the Game: Longoria - Pinch-hit go-ahead RBI in 9th + Venters - Got the save to win the series

Final Score:
Eagles: 2
Tigers: 1

W - M.Moore (15-2) | L - Sabathia (10-8) | SV - Venters (19)
HR: None

It's around a B. I believe 115 or so.

He did decent until the Prince HR, getting into jams as I expected. He'll probably get more starts during September (I'll likely call him up) but I don't know if he has a future with the team or not.

On that note, the next preview is done and that series is the final one before I sim September. I'm excited to see what updates I can think of in that month and then the end-of-year update.

So up next we have a Series Preview, the next series, monthly MVPs for August, and finally our September callups as well as the the rest of the league's. Probably the last series before I sim Sept. and move forward to the playoffs.

(93-39) Eagles vs Orioles (50-82): Series Preview (8/30-9/2)

Image VS. Image

New Jersey will complete August and welcome in September by taking on an AL East rival - the Baltimore Orioles - in a 4-game series. We haven't seen a divisional opponent in a bit so this changes things up. We're an even 7-7 vs the Orioles this season and with their 50-82 record they're 43 games back.

The 4th place O's have managed a 4.80 ERA with 607 R and 1167 H given up. They've permitted 471 walks and their collective 879 strikeouts are last in the AL East. Their lineup doesn't fare too much better - .261 average, 552 runs (worst), 1528 base hits, 101 dingers, and 106 bags stolen.

Let's see what roster GM Dan Duquette has put together since his tenure began in November 2011:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP W.Chen (96/C/C) - 119 IP, 3-9, 3.93 ERA, 88 K, 1 CG, 1 SHO

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And how about some of their farm system who might make a name for themselves this coming month?

LHP Hietpas (87/G/C) - 27 yrs. old, 3 yrs. pro, 2013 rookie
3B Arriaga (E/C/G/E/F/D) - 24 yrs. old, 1 yr. pro, 2015 rookie / 47 G, .227, 2 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 5 XBH

RHP Ordas (86/G/D) - 26 yrs. old, rookie, 2016 pick
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Birds have limped their way to a 20-50 record at Camden Yards but they're decent when away at 30-32. Vs Eastern division clubs, they're 23-38, and overall in August, the Orioles compiled a poor 9-17 record. The American League hasn't treated them nicely either - 35-79. As of late they've heated up though - 7-3 in their last 10 games. With 30 games left, the 1983 champs had their longest win streak last 10 games and their longest streak of losses end at 4.

In the opener, we'll send ace Felix to the bump against Yusmeiro Petit (91/D/C, 49.2 IP, 2-5, 6.34 ERA). Game 2 of 4 will be headlined by either Cliff Lee or Brooks (who could be recalled) versus Patton of the O's. The third game is either Haynes or a recalled Brooks who will be opposed by Hacker, and then the finale will likely be September callup Stewart and vet Wolf going at it.

(93-39) Eagles vs Orioles (50-82): Game 1

Camden Yards held Game 1 of this 4-game set, and fittingly, the home team drew first blood. The end of the 1st showed a 2-1 score as Danny Espinosa knocked home a run in the top half and Chris Davis slammed a homer that brought in himself and Mike Trout. Mike Saunders padded the 1-run lead with a 2-out home run, his 8th of 2016. The flurry of bombs continued when Mike Olt smashed one with one down in the 5th. Orioles starter Yusmeiro Petit was gone by the 6th while Felix gave up just 2 runs in a complete-game effort.

Player of the Game: F.Hernandez (CG, 2-run performance) + C.Davis (Go-ahead HR in 1st)

Final Score:
Orioles: 2
Eagles: 5

W - F.Hernandez (18-3) | L - Petit (2-6)
HR: C.Davis (23), Olt (5), M.Saunders (8)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
C.Davis: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, R
Trout: 1-4, R
Olt: 2-4, HR, 1 RBI
Machado: 1-4, R
M.Saunders: 3-3, HR, 2 RBI, R
F.Hernandez: 9 IP, 14 H, 2 K, 2 ER

-----------------------------------------------
Image
McLouth: 2-5, 2B
Markakis: 3-5, 2B, RBI
A.Jones: 3-5, 3 2B, R
Espinosa: 1-4, 2B, RBI, SO
D.Murphy: 2-4, R
Petit: 5 IP, 7 H, 0 K, 5 ER, 3 HR
Patton: 3 IP, 4 H, 0 K, 0 ER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Hernandez's slider dropped down to a level 3 after last night's outing.
* Our postseason roster has been set, and only one minor change happened - Brooks will be called back up and Stewart was sent down.

Congratulations are in order after Felix's victory tonight. He's rising up the ranks in the history book!

"Felix Hernandez is now tied for 5th among active pitchers for wins in a season!"

Image

The King's Court has to be pleased. Our ace starter now has 18 victories and just three losses, and his 2.04 ERA as well as his number of wins lead the majors.

The former Mariner trails four pitchers and he is tied with Dodger Ted Lilly who also had 18 wins in 2013. Jered Weaver and Justin Verlander are in 2nd along with Tim Lincecum - they all picked up 19 W's in recent years. Current Eagle Cliff Lee currently holds the honor as he won 20 games back in 2012. With 30 games remaining, it's conceivable that King Felix could possibly be at the top of the list by season's end.

(94-39) Eagles vs Orioles (50-83): Game 2

Game 2 was relatively calm and that was thanks to a pitching duel that ensued. Troy Patton allowed just one run and it came off an RBI single by Dustin Ackley in the second. He was spotless for 5 innings and his offense repaid him in the 6th - specifically Adam Jones - who smacked a 2-run double to give Baltimore an advantage. That was pretty much all she wrote as Junge was awarded the hold and Jim Johnson got the save for pitching a scoreless 9th. Cliff Lee did not prevail but his outing was a very good one - 8 innings, 2 strikeouts, and 2 earned runs - although he dropped down to 12-8 on the season.

Player of the Game: A.Jones - Hit the go-ahead 2-RBI 2B + J.Johnson - Got the save to tie the series

Final Score:
Orioles: 2
Eagles: 1

One is for lineups (because it's smaller) and one is for otherwise. I guess one is an alternate, you could say.

I couldn't find a smaller version of the first one.

Who is starting at first for the Orioles? They don't seem to have anyone that's played all season that is able to man first.

Apparently Thome is, Agent. I guess he just got called up or something, it doesn't show any stats for him this year.

Although Betemit could play there and Murphy has in the past.

(94-40) Eagles vs Orioles (51-83): Game 3

The lineup read differently with the recent September callups - 2B Jack Ryan lead off, then RF Camacaro, 3B Machado, DH Butler, 1B Barker, C Wylie, CF Schoening, SS Cresse, and finally LF Jeroloman. Southpaw Xavier Jarana (95/D/B, 3 SLD, 3 CB, 2 FORK) drew the start for the fresh-faced Eagles. Meanwhile, the Orioles' went unchanged. The youngsters for NJ looked to show off as they scored quick - 2 tallies via a Cresse RBI single (his 10th) and a Machado 1-out HR (5) by the end of the 3rd. Jarana impressed on the other side of the diamond, spinning 7 innings of 1-run ball (the one run coming off a Walker RBI single in the 5th) while fanning 5 O's hitters. He was backed by a homer from Barker in the 8th, his first of the year. Haynes picked up the hold in his inning of work and Stewart collected his first save of the year with a hitless 9th inning.

Player of the Game: Cresse - Scored first run with RBI 1B + C.Stewart - Earned first career save

Final Score:
Orioles: 1
Eagles: 3

W - Jarana (1-0) | L - Hacker (5-2) | SV - C.Stewart (1)
HR: Barker (1), Machado (5)
