Agreed! Also, it is very frustrating that I can't influence the computer's lineup. I forget whether the Reds had a good 3b, but they had a sucky LF instead of Teahen. Also, they had a catcher on the bench with all Cs and Ds, but were playing an E/F catcher instead.

I forget which team in my league picked up Carl Crawford, but they're doing it to. Having their all star free agent signing sit in the minors.

6/12 – 14/2009: Iowa City Country at Philadelphia Phillies

Roster: Huisman and Josh Fields reported in purple condition and were sent down to the minors for rest. Shawn Riggins (DFFBDC, 2B, C, 3B) and Junge (DEDECD, 2B, C) replace them on the roster

Game one: Country Bailey (93 EB 2SF – three, DCB – four) at Phillies Hamels (96 CA 2SF – two, CB – four, CH – two)

Lineup: Hudson, Milledge, Spilborghs (LF), Cust (RF), Johnson, Harris (3b), McCurdy, Towles (SS)

A Spilborghs RBI single gave the Country a 1st inning lead that the Phillies tied with an RBI single from Ryan Howard (1-1). In the 3rd, Homer Bailey led off with a single to shallow right field and after moving into scoring position on a Hudson single, scored on a Spilborghs single to center. A Jimmy Rollins leadoff homerun tied the game and a Ryan Howard homerun put the Phillies ahead, three – two. The country came away empty in the top of the fourth, after Towles and Bailey got two-out singles and Hudson walked to load the bases, but in the fifth, Spilborghs led off with a double and scored on fielders choices from Cust and Johnson, tying the game. A Ryan Howard two run homerun in the bottom of the inning gave the Phillies a five – three lead.

McCurdy led off the 6th with a single, Towles bunted him to second and then pinch-hitter Junge, promptly singled to center - it was a close play at the plate, and the catcher caught the throw before McCurdy reached the plate, but it seems that the Phillies catcher tried to make a quick tag and then throw out Junge, who faked going to second, and in his haste, the Phillies catcher missed the tag. Hudson, who singled, doubled, and walked in his previous at-bats, stepped to the plate and drilled a two seam fastball into the left centerfield bleachers for a two run homerun. When the Country took the field in the bottom of the sixth, they used a double switch. Andrew Brown was on the mound, slotted to bat third (Spilborghs spot, who made the last out of the last inning) and Erdos was in left, batting ninth. When Brown retired the Phillies in order, the Country had a six – five lead. Phillies starter, Hamel, did not start the seventh, and middle reliever Madsen mistakenly threw a changeup right over the middle of the plate that Cust promptly deposited into the right field bleachers. The Phillies threatened in the bottom seventh, with Rollins and Victorino singling with one out, but Fireman Brown put out the fire by inducing Chase Utley to hit into a four – five – three inning ending double-play. Seven – five, Country

In the eighth, Milledge doubled home Erdos, who led off the inning with a single and stole second. Cust then singled home Milledge, Johnson singled home Schrager (who reached on a fielders choice). When the Country took the field the bottom half inning, another double switch put Schrager at third and pitcher Green had Brendan Harris' spot (Harris made the last out of the inning). Green started the inning with a big strikeout of Ryan Howard, and then 2 fly outs ended the eighth inning with the Country leading 10 – 5. In the ninth, the Phillies scored a run, but never threatened to overtake the game, and the final score in this Country win was 10 – 6

Comments: Hudson is the player of the game for driving in the run in the sixth inning that put the Country ahead for good. Hudson was 3/4 and missed hitting for the cycle by one triple. Homer Bailey struggled against the powerful Phillies lineup, giving up five runs in his five innings, although he struck out six along the way. The Country's relief pitching combination of Brown and Green held the Phillies offense in check, allowing the Country's offense to put the game away.

Notes: the power off speedball equipment the Country purchased last season is no longer usable. The equipment previously purchased by the Country that is still available includes power spikes, power stamina, a regular glove, and the hotdog. They currently have about 47,000 points available.

Game two: LOST MY DATA - final score: Country 10; Phillies 6

Game three: Country Grindell (93 EC CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) at Phillies Durbin (91 CC SL – one, CB – one, CH – two)

Lineup: Schrager plays third base; Harris is at short

This was a well pitched game with both pitchers going right after the strike zone and keeping hitters off-balance. The Phillies took the lead in the third on a bunt base hit, followed by a single by the Phillies pitcher against a drawn in infield, and then another single. One – zero Phillies after three. In the fourth, Dan Johnson hit a two out, two run homerun putting the Country up by one. Grindell was pulled in the bottom of the fourth after allowing a two-out double, but middle reliever Murray came in and recorded the last out on a grounder to first base. Two – one country

The Phillies let Durbin start the sixth inning even though he was tired and he was really sucking wind after giving up a single to Milledge, who stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then Durbin promptly walked Spilborghs before being pulled for reliever Madsen (94 CE CU – three, CB – two, CH – one). Madsen got Cust on a comebacker to the pitcher and then a Dan Johnson double-play ended the threat. In the bottom half, Ryan Howard hit a solo homerun, tying the game. That same inning, in amazing turn of events, after a few singles, Snelling bunted for a base hit and then pitcher Matson got an infield hit when his ball rolled between the pitcher and second baseman Hudson, allowing another run to score. Andrew Brown came in and gave up another RBI single to Rollins before closing out the inning. Five – two Phillies

Timely two out hitting in the 7th, including a double from Hudson that brought in two runs tied the game against Rosalia (97 DE HSL – four, CH – two, SP – two). In a double switch, Junge, who entered as a pinch-hitter, was manning second and batting ninth and pitcher green replaced Hudson in the batting order. Doubles by Uggla and Werth in the 7th put the Phillies ahead, and a solo home run in the following inning by Rollins extended the Phillies lead to 7 – 5. Brad Lidge entered the game in the 9th for the Phillies (98 DE HSL – five), and with the aid of double-play, closed out the game seven – five

Game four: Country Depablos (93 DC SL – four, CB – four, VSL – one ) at Phillies Mathieson (98 EB SL – three, CH – two)

Lineup: the Country are using the same lineup as yesterday

Inning one: the Country jumped on the Phillies starter, Mathieson, leading off with a triple and after a Cust three-run homerun, the Country led by four. As with many pitchers, the Country were able to jump on Mathieson slider, which didn't have much movement, and when Johnson followed Cust's three-run homerun with one of his own, Mathieson was sent packing without recording an out. When the Phillies stranded Rollins in scoring position, the first inning ended with the Country leading five – zero

Inning two: This time a Hudson score preceded a cost to run homerun and a Johnson solo shot. The Phillies put together three hits and around, ending the ending at nine – one, Country.

Innings three– four: a Ryan Howard two run homerun in the third and a group of three singles in the fourth left the game at nine – four Country entering the fifth

Inning five: Cust and Johnson let off the inning with solo homeruns – their third in as many at-bats. When the Phillies were retired in order, the Country were enjoying an 11 – 4 lead

Inning six: Hudson led off the inning with a homerun to rightfield, giving him a triple, a double, and a homerun in his first four at-bats. At this point, the Phillies brought in their fifth pitcher of the night, using there closer Brad Lidge in order to stop the bleeding

Inning eight: Hudson singled – hitting for the cycle – and then scored when Romero, the last Phillies pitcher not in gray, threw three consecutive wild pitches (or pass balls) on sinking fastballs.

Inning nine: Harris had a solo homerun, and then the Phillies replaced their relief pitcher with Cole Hamels. Middle reliever Jang was called in to start the ninth and retired the Phillies in order, preserving the 14 – 5 blowout

Comments: Amazing offensive performances by Hudson, who hit for the cycle and was named player of the game, Cust and Johnson. Cust and Johnson had back-to-back homers three times in this game, with Cust notching six RBIs. Depablos did not have his best stuff today, allowing 5 runs over six innings with only two strikeouts, but he didn't need to have his best stuff to get the win today. Middle relievers Murray and Jiang pitched the final three innings without allowing a run and only allowing one hit

6/15/2009: weekly MVP

The weekly MVPs for the week ending June 14, 2009 were announced and Cust received the award for the 7th time this year. For this week, he hit 654 with six homeruns and 13 RBIs

AL All-Star balloting was announced the second time. McCurdy is 10,000 votes ahead of Varitek for second place in the All-Star catcher voting, about 300,000 votes behind favorite Joe Mauer.

Dan Johnson, Orlando Hudson, and Josh Fields lead in their respective categories,. Milledge remains fourth in outfield voting – the only Country outfielder nominated.

Trade request

The Nationals have contacted the Country, offering pitcher Ayala (95 BE SL – two, CH – two, HSK – two) -2 lefty, poise – four, recovery – four) for Country spot starter O'Connor (89 EA SL – three, CB – one, CH – four) slow starter, choke artist

Ayala will be a free agent after this year while O'Connor has three more years after this one before being a free agent. Both players earn approximately $400,000, annually.

Insiders say the question is not whether the Country will accept this trade, as they surely won't, but whether the Country will make a counter offer

Offer O'Connor for another starter. Maybe John Lannan? He is pretty good in '08 other than his F control.

Yeah, but it looks like the Nata want him so I would trade him for some solid talent.

6/16 – 18/2009: Iowa City Country versus Washington Nationals

Roster moves: prior to the start of today's series, the Country made the following roster moves
Middle relievers Jiang and Murray were sent down, replaced by middle reliever Stratton and starter Bourgeois

Spilborghs, in purple condition, was sent down to AAA, replaced by Timpner

Starting third baseman and shortstop Josh Fields and Huisman were recalled, and Riggins and Junge sent down

Game one: Country Pettyjohn (95 DC 2SF – one, SL – one, CB – one, PA – three) versus Nationals Bergman (93 DB SL – three, CB – two, CH – three)

Lineup: Hudson, Milledge, Erdos, Cust, Fields, Johnson, McCurdy, Sweeney (RF), Huisman

Pettyjohn seemed lucky to get out of the first inning unscathed, as he gave up singles to the 1st 2 batters, but was rescued when Dmitri Young hit into a three – five – one doubleplay. In the 2nd, Pettyjohn gave up a leadoff double, but was, again, rescued by a double play. Pettyjohn seem to settle down in the third, striking out Ryan Zimmerman and getting two weak grounders to end the inning easily, but inn the fourth, the Nationals again stranded a runner in scoring position when Pettyjohn induced a six – six – three double-play to end the inning. Pettyjohn lost his shut out in the 5th when he, again allowed the first two batters to reach base and the first batter scored on a double play. Pettyjohn was unable to finish out the sixth, leaving with two out and runners on first and second. Stratton came in and gave up another single and a double to Scudaro before closing out the top of the sixth.

The Country, meanwhile, had no trouble scoring in the early innings.
    Erdos drove home Hudson
Cust hammered a curveball that dropped right into the middle of the plate for a three-run homerun.
Cust homered on a changeup after watching two changeups and a fastball go by
Hudson homered over the centerfield wall with Sweeney on base
    RBI single from Milledge
Timpner scored all the way from first on a Johnson double off the right centerfield wall. Johnson then scored on a ground rule double from McCurdy; McCurdy scored on a Sweeney single. A few more singles, including an RBI single from Hudson, an Erdos sacrifice fly, and Cust's third homerun of the day – this one off of a hanging changeup
Sweeney hit a two run homerun
Final score: Country 18, Nationals 3

Notable: at the end of the sixth inning, when the Country lead eight – three, the Nationals had more hits (13) then the Country (12)

Comments: Pettyjohn's pitching line - three runs in 5 – 2/3 innings with three strikeouts would have been much worse if he hadn't been rescued by 3 double plays in the first 4 innings. Hudson, again, missed hitting for the cycle by only a triple. He did hit for the cycle in the last series. Cust had another amazing outing, which seems to be the norm for him. 4/5, 3HR, seven RBIs. Sweeneys homerun was the bench player's first this season.

Game two: Country Bailey (93 EB 2SF – three, DCB – four) versus Nationals Redding (93 DB 2SF – one, SL – one, SLV – two, CH – one)

Lineup: the Country are resting Fields and Milledge, who reported in blue condition, and shifted Dan Johnson (also blue) to the DH spot. The lineup – Hudson, Erdos, Cust (RF), Johnson, Harris (3b) Schrager (1B), McCurdy, Sweeney (CF), Huisman

Inning one: with two outs, Cust scored all way around from first on Dan Johnson's RBI double that the Nationals outfielders seem to lose track of. An RBI single from Harris gave the Country a two – zero lead after one.

Inning three: Bailey was pitching very well, but got into a little trouble, allowing runners to reach second and third with one out. When he struck out Ryan Guzman and then induced a slow rolling groundball up the middle, it appeared that he would escape the inning, but a hard running Christian Guseman beat out Huisman's throw by a step, allowing one run to score. Back-to-back doubles by Cust and Johnson gave the Country back their two run lead. Three – one Country

Inning six: doubles by Nick Johnson and Austin Kearns cut the Country's lead to 1. When the Country stranded Huisman on second, the inning ended with the Country leading three – two

Inning seven: Bailey started off the game strong, striking out five the first three innings, but struggled in the middle innings and gave up a leadoff single in the seventh before being removed for Andrew "Fireman" Brown. Brown recorded the next two outs, but gave up the game-tying RBI single to Ryan Zimmerman. The Country were overly aggressive in their baserunning in their half of the seventh, with Erdos getting thrown out on a steal attempt and Cust thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double. Three – three

Inning eight: McCurdy get a one-out double over the centerfielders head and was able to score on a soft flyball from Sweeney that fell just out of reach of the Nationals shortstop. Sweeney took second on the throw home and scored on a Hudson homerun – it was his first hit of the day. Six – three Country

Inning nine: Chamberlain took the mound to close out the game against the bottom of the Nationals lineup, but gave up a double to LoDuca and then a single to Scutaro, both off of fastballs hit to the opposite field, putting runners at first and third with no out. Chamberlain then struck out the next two batters before giving up an RBI single. Dmitri Young came to the plate, representing the go-ahead run, and ground out to short, ending the game six – four, Country.

Comments: the Nationals' Redding pitched very well. While he did throw changeups, he kept the Country hitters off-balance by using all of his pitches and never throwing his changeup more than twice in a row. He also never threw a pitch over the heart of the plate. Frankly, the rest of the league's pitchers should use a tape of today's game as a guide on how to pitch against the dynamic Country lineup

Ryan Sweeney was named the player of the game for putting the Country ahead in the eighth inning. The Country's three – five hitters, Cust, Johnson, and Harris each went 3/4, with Johnson driving in two runs and Harris driving in one.

Game three: Country Grindell (93 EC CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) versus Nationals McGowan (97 DA SL – two, CB – two, SP – two)

Lineup: Sweeney (RF), McCurdy, Erdos, Johnson (DH), fields, Harris (2b), Schrager (1B), Timpner (CF), Huisman

The score was zero – zero heading into the fifth when Harris led off with a double over the centerfielders head, moved to third on a fielders choice and scored on a Timpner single over the heads of the drawn in infield. One – zero Country

Inning seven: while Grindell continued to baffle the Nationals, the Country would not threaten again until Fields led off the seventh with a double to left center field and then Harris hit a two – one split fingered fastball out of the park. Schrager followed with a double and scored on a Timpner single. Four – zero Country

Shawn Green took over for Grindell in the sixth, and pitched through to the end of the game, giving up only two hits and no runs in his three innings of work.

Comments: Timpner was named player of the game for his timely RBIs. He and Harris were responsible for 2 of the Country's four runs. Johnson was 0/4

Condition: right now, eight of the Country's 13 position players are reporting in blue condition, including six of their everyday players. Only Cust, Erdos, and McCurdy (the young catcher has been amazingly durable this season) are reporting in better than blue condition.

6/19 – 21/2009: Iowa City Country at Arizona Diamondbacks

Game one: Country O'Connor (89 EA SL – three, CB – one, CH – four) at Diamondbacks Johnson (95 EB 2SF – two, SL – three, SP – two)

Comments: in Orlando Hudson's first game against his prior team, he will face Randy Johnson, who after 21 years, has lost a little movement on his slider, but can still be a dominating pitcher; some Country players complained during batting practice that the dirt strip between home plate and the pitcher's mound made it more difficult to pick up the ball on its way home

Lineup: Milledge is being given the day off, replaced by Erdos

Inning one: the Country got off to a quick start, as Hudson singled and scored all the way from first when Erdos drove a three – one splitter up in the zone over the head of the second baseman for a double. Erdos was ultimately cut down at the plate, but two batters later, Dan Johnson hit a three-run homerun into the right-field bleachers. After starting the top 1/2 of the inning off with a base hit and coming around the score, Orlando Hudson recorded the second out of the bottom 1/2 of the inning when the second batter grounded the ball into the hole between first and second. Hudson made a diving stop deep to his left and quickly threw to first for the out.

Of course, Hudson also got a front row seat to watch Randy Johnson break the record for most career strikeouts. Johnson broke the record by striking out Hudson in the bottom of the fourth!

The pitchers battled back and forth until the eighth inning when, against the Diamondbacks middle reliever, Erdos singled, went to second when the centerfielder bobbled the ball, and scored on a Spilborghs opposite field base hit. Cust followed up with a single just before Josh Fields took a fastball thrown just below the strike zone and put it over the left-field fence for a three-run homerun that blew the game open, eight – zero.

O'Connor continued to pitch, allowing a double in the eighth inning and closing out the ninth with relative ease. Eight – zero Country

Analysis: O'Connor and Erdos were named players of the game – O'Connor for pitching a complete game four hit shutout and Erdos for knocking in the game's first RBI with a double. This was a well pitched game until the Diamondbacks middle reliever tired in the seventh inning. Randy Johnson settled down after the first inning and allowed only one hit in innings two through four. Johnson allowed no hits in the fifth and the Diamondbacks reliever continued to mow down the Country in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing no hits, but O'Connor was masterful. He had only three strikeouts, but only allowed the Diamondbacks two hits in the first, one in the second, and then not another hit until a double in the eigth. The vast majority of balls put in play by the Diamondbacks were to the middle of the field. Fields and Johnson only handled two hits, while Huisman fielded nine balls at short and Hudson five at second. Even in the outfield, the centerfielder handled four while the corner outfielders handled one apiece

Notable: after the game, Johnson reported in purple condition and was sent down to minors to rest. Merrill (DDEEEE, 1B, 3-D) took his place on the roster. Also, the Country management purchased power velocity balls to help pitchers increase their top speed.

Game two: Country Jimenez (98 EB CB – two, CH – four) at Diamondbacks Edwin Jackson (98 DB 2SF – one, SL – three, CH – two)

Lineup: Merrill plays first and baths sixth, Erdos bats second in place of Milledge, and Huisman and McCurdy have switched places in the batting order (eight and nine)

A pitching dual kept the game scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Country's pitcher got a two-out single and then Hudson homered off of a Jackson two seam fastball down the middle. The Diamondbacks tied it up in the next inning when a Jason Bay single down the left-field line brought home two runs

The score remained tied, sending the game into extra innings and it remained tied until the bottom of the 12th when Ken Griffey Junior hit a two-out home run over the left-field fence. Final score: Diamondbacks win, three – two in 12 innings

Comments: this was an extraordinarily well pitched game. Spilborghs was the only Country player with more than one hit – he had two. Cust and Huisman were hitless. With the Diamondbacks, Griffey and Bay had three hits apiece.
