It was about 8:00 AM when I headed into the office. Our game wasn't until the evening, so I had plenty of time to work. I locked the door behind me, hoping to be productive. A knock on the door came at 8:45.

"Matty! Are you in there!" I heard Claire shout. I thought about ignoring her, but realized she might break down the door if I did that.
"Yeah Claire... do you need something?"
"Come out here!"
"...Do I really have to?"
"Yes! It's an emergency!"
"Is it really?"
"Come out here now!"
I quickly set down my things and rushed out the door.
"What's the emergency?"
"I'm starved!" she said with a grin. "C'mon we're going to get breakfast!"
I sighed. "I don't have time for this, Claire. I've got work to do."
"You work yourself too hard, Matty. You need a break."
"Uh, you can just call me Mr. Weaver."
"No need for that, Matt!" she paused for a moment, then laughed. "That rhymed!"
"Remind me again why I hired you?"
"To help you relax!"

Somehow, I found myself at IHOP.

"You know," I said when we arrived, "I'd really prefer Denny's."
"That's too bad," she replied without a hint of regret. "You'll enjoy IHOP."
"I'll have a coffee."
"You'll have pancakes and you'll like it."

We were soon seated, and I reluctantly ordered a small order of pancakes. Our food arrived, and I was about to start eating when my cell phone buzzed.

"I've got to take this, Claire," I told her. She sighed, and I checked the caller ID.
(Why's he calling?)
I answered. "Hello?"
"Hello, Matthew."
There was a silence. I supposed he was waiting for a response. "Uh, hello."
"I suppose you're proud of your little team?" he asked.
"Um... I guess so... it was a good-"
"Hmph. Cocky as always."
"No, I wasn't-"
"Listen, Matt. You may think your team is talented. You may think you're a competent manager. You may think you're better than you once were, and you may think you're a nice guy. I'm hear to tell you that none of that is true..." he went on for quite some time. A few minutes into the "conversation", Claire asked who it was. Preston Greene, I mouthed. She then reached across the table, grabbed my cell phone, and put it on speaker.
"...You got that?" a now much louder voice concluded.
"Um, uh, yes."
"Good."
*click*

"What was that about?" Claire inquired.
"I don't really know... he was monologue-ing and then you grabbed my phone."
"It didn't sound like a pleasant monologue."
"Are they ever pleasant?"
We ate for a while without speaking.
"What's his problem?"
I stared down at my food with a pained expression.
"It's... it's a long story."
"You've known him for a long time?"
"Yes."
"So...?"
"So what?"
"So what happened?! Sheesh..."
I sighed. "It really is a long story..." I repeated.
"But it's a good one, isn't it?"
"Depends on your definition of good." I mumbled, trailing off into thought...

Do you smell that? It sorta smells like a possible flashback

I'm really liking this Phoenix/Edgey relationship they've got going

November 30th, 1998

I entered my Econ classroom at 8:40. I looked around quickly, and saw Melissa in the middle about ten rows up. I waved to her and headed to the seat she'd saved for me.

"Hey, how's it going?" I asked.
"As good as it can be at a morning class."
I laughed.

About ten minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder.

"Can I squeeze in here?" asked Preston from behind me. I glanced up and down the row.
"Sorry," I replied, "the whole row's taken."
"Can you ask someone to move?"
"Nah, just sit behind us."
He grumbled, but reluctantly took a seat. I resumed my conversation with Melissa.

About 30 minutes, when there was a short break in the lecture, Preston got my attention again.
"Hey, it feels like we never see each other anymore," he said with a frown.
"What do you mean?" I asked, confuesed. "We live in the same room."
"Well, yeah, but you're only ever there to sleep," he explained. "If that..."
"I guess."

Professor Eldrick resumed his lecture, and we became absorbed with note-taking. I started to grow bored, so I began to poke Melissa with my pencil.
"Stop it!" she whispered. I apologized, but I did it again a minute later.
"Matt!" she said, holding back a grin. I smiled at her, and playfully slapped my arm. Preston then interrupted our little game.

"Hey, Matt?"
"Um, yeah?"
"MLB Winter Meetings are coming up in December. I was thinking... maybe we could go together? It would be a good experience, don't you think?"
I thought about it for a moment.
"They're the weekend of December 11th," he continued, "in Nashville."
"Nashville? That's kind of far away, isn't it?"
"Yeah, but it'll be worth it."
I looked at Melissa, then back at Preston.
"I'm in."

Whoah! A road trip! And a kind of sort of love triangle.

High-jinx will ensue. I smell sit-com!

Good update, though.
