None of the mobs are afraid of torches, they just can't spawn where there is light.

If it's night, and there are torches around, and a mob is following you, they won't just stop at the sight of a torch.

You're having a lighting problem, most likely, put more torches around, and be more observant. Creepers don't make any sound, so pay attention to what's behind you, and you should be fine.

Creepers still can't spawn in light. If you put torches all around your house, they can't spawn near it.

Also, I hear cats are pretty much Creeper repellent.
