November 19th, 2001

A crowd of anxious reporters gathered in a press conference room just outside where I waited with the two men who had hired me. An assistant of theirs gave a cue, and they headed out into the adjacent room. Camera flashes greeted them and they kindly waved as they headed towards their seats. That was all I saw before the door closed.

As I waited, I tried to gather my thoughts. I was nervous as hell. Palms sweaty, teeth grinding, I tried to listen in on what was going on out there.

"We have decided on a General Manager, yes."
There was some mumbling, presumably from a reporter
"The Arizona Diamondbacks are in very capable hands with him at the helm."
More mumbles.
"He is here, in fact."

The assistant motioned for me to head into the room, and as soon as I opened the door, the press exploded with questions. I managed to give a nervous grin as I headed to the chair between the two owners. Rodrick Reilly, who did most of the talking between the duo, pointed to a reporter, indicating for her to ask her question.

"Excuse me, sir, who are you?" she asked.
The room fell silent and everyone looked at me. I felt my voice failing. I leaned towards the microphone.
"My name is Matthew Weaver." I croaked.
Once again the room erupted with noise.
"Mr. Weaver, how old are you?" One man questioned.
"I-I turned 21 in August, sir."
The reporters went wild with this information.
"21? Did he really just say 21?"
"Did he even go to college?"
"Who the hell is this guy?"
Mr. Reilly stopped them. "I assure you, Mr. Weaver is a step in the right direction for this ball club. He is very knowledgeable, both in business and in baseball," he stated firmly. "And baseball is a business, is it not?" he added with smirk. I admired his charisma. The media was putty in his hands.
"There will be no further questions."

September 30th, 2014

I looked up at the man who now stood in front of me. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was speechless; Preston Greene, however, was never speechless.

"Can it be? The great Matt Weaver is returning to baseball after all this time?" he exclaimed. I said nothing.
"I'm happy for you. Really, I am," he assured me. It wasn't hard to sense the insincerity of this statement. I remained silent.
Preston turned to the assistant. "Shall we get started, then?" he asked with a grin.

We were lead into a room. Two men were already there. I didn't recognize either.

An older man in a suit greeted me first. "John Mason. Commissioner of baseball," he said, extending his hand for a shake. "As of 2015, that is," he added with a wink.

So ol' Selig finally got the boot, eh? I thought to myself.

The other man, who was fairly large and balding, sported a polo shirt with a dolphin on it; I inferred that he was the Dolphins' owner. "Tim Porter," he stated with a slight wave.

I realized something odd. "Excuse me, where's the owner of the Gunmen?" I asked.
Mason gave a weird look to Porter, and then explained, "He... was unable to attend, unfortunately."
I found this a bit unusual, but things happen. People miss meetings. "Well who is he?" I asked.
Another strange glance between Mason and Porter. "We're... not really sure."
"You're not sure?"
"The team was immediately bought by an anonymous bidder. He offered over $500 million, more than double the next highest bid. We were in no position to ask for personal information."
No one spoke.
"Anyway," Mason continued, "We're here to discuss the upcoming expansion draft," he explained.
"When is it?" I asked. Everyone in the room shared a nervous look.
"It's scheduled for October 2nd," Mason told me. Seems a bit soon, I said to myself.
"Who exactly is going to be available for this draft?" I questioned.
"I'm glad you asked," Mason said with a grin, "we believe this draft is going to lead the to most competitive expansion teams in history. A rookie pool of over 50 of the best young men we could find will be available. These new teams are going to be very young and very competitive."
"So no veterans from other teams will be drafted?" Porter asked.
"No, but I assure you, many of these young men are the stars of the future," said Mason.
"I don't know if this is going to work," said Greene. "Thrusting young men into pressure situations is never a good idea." I winced.
"Don't worry, Mr. Greene. I'm sure a man of your caliber will do just fine!" Mason said confidently.

The meeting didn't last much longer, and we were out the door after less than an hour.

"Good luck in the draft, Preston," I said as we exited the building.

"Oh, I'll do just fine," he assured me, "I don't need your luck."

OH YAY! MOAR!

Did you make these guys in Success, or is it just a bunch of gray bars?

I am anxiously awaiting part 3... or 4, whatever it is next. I wanna see who the owner is. Jack Allen mebbe? No, he's already in another cross over... but who?

Reading this log is going to require a lot of patience. I plan on taking my time with revealing info. Image

August 19th, 1998

"Here it is, Rubin Hall."

I looked to see my father gesturing to see a large, very square brick building.

"This is where I'll be living, huh?"
"Yep. Let's go find your room."

We ascended two flights of stairs.

"Here it is, 306."
"Think my roommate's here yet?"
"Let's find out."

I opened the door, and sure enough, he was there.

"Hey, I'm Preston. I take it you're my new roommate?"
I nodded.
"Great! I'm almost done unpacking already, so I'll get out of your way soon here."

My parents and I headed down to get the rest of my stuff, and when we came back, he was gone. I finished unpacking, said my goodbyes, and started to settle into the college life. I was lying on my bed, listening to music, when he returned.

"Hey, roommate!" he exclaimed upon his entrance. He treated me as if he'd known me his own life, yet he didn't even know my name yet. As if on cue, he then said, "Say, I never did get your name."
"Matthew Weaver," I told him.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Matt. Mind if I call you Matt?" he asked. I shook my head. "Well, Matt, what are you here for?"
"I think I'm going to go into business," I stated. "My dream is to be a General Manager in the majors," I admitted, and he gave me a strange look. "Yeah, I know, that probably won't happen, but-"
"No, I was just surprised. That's my dream, too!"
I stared at him. "You're not kidding?"
"Not at all."
"Wow," I said, "I guess those roommate applications know what they're doing, eh?"
"I guess so. What do you say we do this together?"
"You mean become GM's?"
"Yeah. C'mon, we'll be a team!"
I thought for a second.
"Sure, why not?" I said.
"I've got a good feeling about this," Preston said with a smile as we shook hands.
"Me too, Preston," I agreed. "Me too."
