Back in the day, the Democratic and Republican parties were the opposite o what they are now. Democrats were the conservatives, along with being federalists. They may have still been called the Federalists when Lincoln was president, I can't remember. Regardless, Republicans were more liberal, and they believed more in the people than they did in the government.

Much different than it is today. Lincoln was a different kind of Republican than McCain is, so, essentially, it's like they're from different parties.
