Really? He pitched a perfect game. Dallas Braden also pitched a perfect game. Perfect games, while they are the peak of most pitchers' careers, are a lot of luck. Matt Cain is performing very well this year, but in no way does he deserve that contract.

He's been dominant this year. His stats show that he deserves that contract, 1st in WHIP, 2nd in K's, and 3rd in ERA. There's little chance he'll win the MVP like Verlander did last year, but he's currently the front-runner for the Cy Young award.

I'm not denying that Cain is a good pitcher, but seriously, he doesn't have a great fastball or any great breaking pitches, and there are many more deserving pitchers around the MLB who should have contracts like him. Matt Cain is only 77-75 career. Matt Cain is good, but not worth his contract.

Records mean nothing. Matt Cain is notorious for having incredibly shitty run support.

It's an ERA that should be paid attention to, along with WHIP.

A pitcher's record is more dependent on his team than it is on him (or her).

He has an ERA of 2.18 (3rd in all of baseball) and a WHIP of 0.85 (1st in all of baseball). Add in his 96 strikeouts (tied for second in the league) and you have a stud who, in my opinion, is more than worthy of that contract.
