Pirates Make History to End Losing Streak

The Pirates have finally ended their woeful losing streak of eleven games in a high scoring affair against Rays. J.P. Howell was chased in the first inning where the Pirates scored seven runs. In the fifth, the Pirates attacked Jae Kuk Ryu by also tagging him for seven runs. But the Pirates also had pitching issues as they gave up nine runs of their own. What was a strength at the beginning of the season is now a liability to the team. Now that the Pirates have figured out their offense, hopefully they can fix their pitching. But more importantly, the Pirates made history as this was the most runs ever scored to end a losing streak that was ten games or longer.

You'll never guess what the Pirates's record was this month. 12-16. Again. After a good start, they lost eleven straight before winning four to end out the month. Pittsburgh has slowly changed their philosophy since the beginning of the year where they were part of many low scoring games. Now, they find themselves in blowouts and slugfests. They scored 171 runs this month compared to 157 allowed. Despite a +14 number, they couldn't find a way to earn more wins. From other news around the league, the Mets are still the best team, but currently only hold a four game lead over the Tigers, compared to eight last month. This is due to the Mets going three games under .500 while the Tigers went five games over. And after a month in which they went 9-18, the Dodgers went from a middle-of-the-pack team to the third worst in baseball

Pirates Squeeze by Reds

The Pirates got by the Red's despite being down early. In the first Dunn and Griffey Jr. hit back-to-back homers to go up three nothing. The Pirates incited a rally in the fourth to take to lead, but gave it back in the bottom half to go down 4-5. In the seventh, the Pirates took it back due to a Nady homerun (his second of the day) and extended it with McLouth hitting a solo shot in the ninth. Bottom of the ninth, two outs, and a runner on third, Dunn belted a shot down the right field line, just to curve foul just inches from the pole. On the next pitch Capps threw a changeup to strike Dunn out and end the game.

Game Ends in Interesting Score on Independence Day

The Pirates have now won their seventh straight after defeating the Brewers on the 4th of July. Both teams scored four funs in the first and stayed tied like that until the eighth inning. There, Bautista jacked a three run shot into the upper deck to give the Pirates the lead. Capps came in the next inning and sealed ended the game. But the best part about the whole thing was the score. This was just the ninth time in MLB history that a game on Independence Day ended in a score of 7-4, and the second time it involved the Pirates.
