I'm going to do at least one more pitcher first, but when I get back to position players I'll tackle Clemente if no one else gets to him first.

Buck O'Neil (1B)- great contact and fielding, below average power and speed.
Josh Gibson (C)- great power, arm strength, fielding, contact, average speed
Cool Papa Bell (CF)- great speed, fielding, contact, average (or below) power, good arm strength
Satchel Paige - already mentioned in Request? topic thread
Rube Foster - great stamina, good control, great fastball, decent breaking pitches

If I were to have a negro league 1B named Buck, let's make it Leonard please! Buck Leonard, if I read the stories correctly, could be very simular to Gehrig. I'd like to see an Oscar Charleston too, if anyone gets inspired. He was supposed to be the best of the lot.

Why the poor fielding for Oh?
He won nine gold gloves in Japan.

About Buck Leonard:
Yeah, he was the guy who was called the black Lou Gehrig, and people sometimes called Gehrig the white Buck Leonard. Unless I'm confusing him with someone else. I actually initially thought that he was Buck O'Neill.

Bob, admittedly my knowledge of the old Negro League players is limited to the handful of "big names." Do you know of a good online resource for info on these guys? I know stats might be sketchy because of the nature of the times, but maybe with good enough descriptions to get an accurate assessement of abilities and skill levels to translate into MLBPP? With pitchers especially I'm a stickler for getting their repertoire right.

One of these times I'm making the voyage from Texas to St. Louis to visit family I need to make a point of stopping off in KC and visiting the Negro Leagues museum there.

Bob Gibson - reading up on him, he had a dominant hard slider to go with his top end fastball, and a slow looping curve that was sometimes more of a vertical break and sometimes more diagonal. So I gave him both a SCB and DCB to accomodate that.

I don't know if I can complain, but no Power P, it's an easy ability?

He's great, though. Looking forward to using him.

I debated on Power P, but decided that he probably wouldn't favor his fastball to the degree that the green ability seems to indicate ("throws mostly fastballs"). So in the end I left him balanced between fastballs and breaking pitches rather than pushing one way or the other through the green abilities. But I definitely thought about it.

ah, my friend, you have a point.

I just base it on whether he throws hard, or is a finesse pitcher. Probably not the best idea.

Whitey Ford - okay, so here's my incredibly frustrating Whitey Ford that I alluded to in the Dr. Goodjob thread. From my reading on ford, he wasn't a "junk baller" per se, but he threw several different breaking pitches and changeups to go with an average fastball. His secret weapon at Yankee Stadium was the groundskeepers, who would soak an area of dirt behind the mound. Whitey used that for his patented "mud ball" -lol- His catcher, Elston Howard, would also sharpen his belt buckle and drag the ball across it before throwing it back to Ford in order to cut/scuff it up. That lead to some strange moving pitches as well :)

On the stats below, I had everything positioned for the second Dr. Goodjob event to push them to where I wanted them to be. But I delayed reloading for Goodjob too long, intending to do it on one of the weeks off during the 3rd year games. But once I hit May Week 4 I didn't get another single RE the rest of the game, even after reloading 30-35 times combined between the World Gatherings game and the first tournament game and then between the Champion Rings and Superstars game :( So Whitey feels rather unfinished to me, though comically enough he was amazing in the Superstars game - complete game 4 hitter that I won 4-1, with their only run being a solo shot by A-Rod his first time up. I had the Rookie Charm, but did *not* have the psychic goggles. Funny, I had never beaten the Superstars game before in all this time, and now I've beaten them twice in a row -lol-

Oh, the original pitch it a sinking fastball (SIFB) that I named "Mud Ball" in honor of one of his best pitches :) It has two "less slowdown," two "sharper pitch," and one "better breaking ball" upgrades.

What a plethora of pitches?!

What age are you starting all your guys at?

Yeah, I was trying to reflect Whitey Ford's ability to throw from multiple arm slots, which combined with scuffing and adding mud to the ball gave his breaking pitches and changeup a lot of different looks. So it was less that he really threw all these different pitches as much as he had the ability to make his pitches have different breaks and angles coming into the strike zone.

As far as ages, my concept for these guys is that I pick out a year in their career that best reflects their abilities - one of their best years if not the best. I use their birthday (I look it up and enter the correct date), what year they entered the majors, and the particular year I'm building them against to determine their age and years in the majors. For most players, their best years are in their late 20s, so most of the guys I do are 27-29 years old and have 5-8 years in the majors. I know that's a negative towards the end of Season Mode, but I'm opting for realism over that :)

Here's Hoyt:

I'd had him for a while, kept forgetting:

Hoyt Wilhelm - level 7 knuckler, decent everywhere else, high-stamina closer
