If you take a look through the guides on the Wiki, you'll get some good ideas on improving your Success Mode players. My first few that actually got successfully through to getting the contract were nothing special either. My first pitcher (a starter) had B stamina, D control, 90 MPH fastball, level 7 knuckler, level 5 curve, and only a few blue abilities.

Conversely, the starter I finished this afternoon had A stamina, A control, 103MPH fastball, level 7 original pitch (from an SCB), level 7 SIFB, level 7 CCHG, level 6 SLV, level 3 2SFB, and almost every blue ability.

My point is, it is just a learning process. You'll get better at it. The guys you're looking to do aren't high end, you should be able to pull them off :)

Who's this beastly pitcher you talk of?

As I said earlier, I want to make the Mets' Nelson Figueroa and raul casanova. If anyone could help out that would be great. Also, if anyone knows what stats they should have that would be great. I know that Figueroa has a slider and maybe a changeup but I don't know anything else. Thanks :D :P

Actually I remade myself -lol- In my examples above, both pitchers were me. I decided to take a brief break from hall of famers and do this one. It certainly helped that I got *2* successful Dr. Goodjob challenges. That accounted for 30 points in STAM and CTRL, 6MPH on the fastball, and lots of extra XP to play with. Had another 8 points in STAM and CTRL from the Pitching Heart glove and Tri Fangs shoes :)

I tried a bit of an Eephus from our other thread - I took the SCB and modified it with (I think) 4 "better slow ball" and 3 "stronger changeup" upgrades (no idea what the difference between those two are). I haven't compared it to a real SCB, but pitching the Superstars game my 103MPH 4SFB was checking in at 99 in the early innings (just throwing it, no tapping "A" for extra velocity), with the "Kapt. HooK" at 78MPH. For comparison sake, my CCHG was coming in at 83).

2 Goodjobs  That's impressive. I've still never got it. I've only visited him for the 2nd time once, but was unsuccessful, and didn't bother pursuing.

How long did it take you to reload for those, and all of Dad's training? Man, I'm doing my first A stamina starter and am pushing for C control and a mid-90's top speed, and only 9 abilities.

Maybe you should remake your brother/cousin (Dave Willis?) who ended up with F's and G's for a shortstop.

Google is as good a place to start as any. When I plugged Nelson Figueroa in, first link was to his Wikipedia page. According to that he "He features a fastball, slider, curveball and breaking ball." Don't know what kind of breaking ball they mean on the latter. Baseball-reference.com is a great resource for statistics - here's Figueroa's player page:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/figuene01.shtml. This NY Times article describes him as "crafty" and someone who relies on a lot of different breaking pitches to offset a mediocre fastball - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/sports/baseball/04mets.html?ex=1362373200&en=daaf4f7b7e7ffb4b&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink Also found this scouting report:

"Figgy is a lean, wiry guy with an easygoing, loose motion. He has a 3/4 delivery, but he dropped down sidearm a few times in his bullpen session. He has a quick release to the plate, which should keep runners close. His stuff is OK — an average fastball with decent life that seemed to be around 90-91, and he mixes his speeds well. He fooled one hitter by throwing in the high-80s most of the at-bat, then reaching back and putting some extra mustard on strike three; my guess is he hit 93 on that pitch." [source:http://www.metstoday.com/spring-training-08/2008/johans-debut/

Just from what I've learned about him in the last 5 minutes, I'd say he'd get an A in STAM with the Recovery blue ability, a 93MPH TOP SPD, B CTRL, a level 3 SLD, level 3 CB, level 3 CHG, and I'd probably also give him a level 3 DCB or SCB to help with the "mixing speeds." I'd give him the blue Release ability as well based on his scouting report.

Some minor but important traits would be:

Breaking Ball P
Good Pace

And maybe Spin 4 to further his breaking balls.

I'm not big on realism, though, and prefer to go as far as possible, albeit without spending hours reloading.

Yeah, Dave is my 4-year old :) Another one of those early Success Mode players before I got better at it. Probably should re-do him as well, in Season Mode I have to stash him in fielding training for a year to get his defense and arm strength up.

On my pitcher, I reloaded Jan Year 3 for the first Dr. Goodjob. Took probably 15-20 minutes I'd guess. After having the mess with no RE's after the year 3 games started, I reloaded for Dr. Goodjob's second visit in March week 4. That took more like an hour, but fortunately the first challenge was successful so I didn't have to do any further reloading. The 3rd Dr. Goodjob visit was just a luck of the draw May week 1, I didn't even know you could get a follow up visit after the second visit. I burned my Shuffle Whistle to get a Challenge card, and luckily it was successful on the first try as well.

With the dad events, I got to the dad/Mr.Fox meeting bumping into each other in town event (the "diamond in the rough" exchange) early in year 2 just from playing and not doing any special reloading for dad events. That's the main trigger event, so a couple of weeks later I did the reload thing until I got second dad/Mr. Fox exchange where Mr. Fox challenges dad to show you something. I think I got that in about 5 minutes? Of course once you get that event, the very next week dad shows up, you play a challenge, you get your original pitch. My SCB was only like level 4 at that point, so I also had to gamble it up along the way after that. For subsequent dad events, sometimes I reloaded for them and sometimes they just happened. I could have forced the reload thing and gotten him even more, but that gets really tedious.

One other unusual thing - it literally took me an hour and a half to get Gyroball from Annie, but when I did get it I got both Gyroball and Str Finisher blue abilities from the same event! I can't remember ever getting two abilities of a single RE before.

That reminds of today. Although not nearly as impressive. I got a glove, Dr. K, and without knowing what ability it had, I used it and it had both Fastball Life and Dr. K, which isn't unheard of, but still pleasantly surprising. I'd planned on just one ability, and using the level 4 moneyman in year 3, to acquire the other ability.

One time I've gotten 3 abilities was on a Becky date, when I got Star, Sparkplug, and Gd Infield hitter, which would be great for a lead-off hitter, but, unfortunately, it was my catcher, and I was only looking for Star, so I reloaded, and it took me about 10 more minutes to just get Star.

That's probably why I have little interest in recreating current major league players. Other than doing a quickie playthrough for fun like I did with my Lone Wolf carrying no-save-even-once RP "X," or making a fictitious player who has average abilities, I don't have as much fun making average players. No current MLB pitcher has a level 7 anything pitch, let alone 2, 3, or 4 of them :) I like Hall of Famers because the very nature of them is that you can combine realism and exceptional abilities.

I feel you, man.
The majority of my guys are made-up names (well, names that have nothing to do with baseball, I didn't exactly make them up), so that whatever I get, it flies, and I can say that that's what it's supposed to be.

Baseball prospects are good, too, because they can be easy, and you can make their abilities reflect the sky-high ceiling that most will never achieve.
