Post subject:  Questions from a newbie

I just bought the game last week , and i love it , 20 games per day since !

But i have some questions :

1. Can we unlock old uniforms ??? if so , how ?
i'm dreaming about the orioles old cap , or expos's uniform
What about old stadiums ?

2. Any mascots in the game ? never saw one yet, trying to make a home run with the Brewers , to see the Bernie Brewer 's slide !

3. I'm editing all the players with players from the past, it's a lot of fun to do, i'm trying to find a site where i can see the best players for each position , for each team's history, do you know that kind of site ?

4. I saw pictures of all the mascots from MLB's history, but i can't find a pic of Orbit (Mascot for Houston before 2000) anyone saw it on the net ?

No to all of your questions. I would think a google search would help you with 3 and 4.

For me it's:
C- Josh Gibson
1B- Lou Gehrig
2B- Roger Hornsby
3B- Alex Rodriguez
SS- Honus Wagner
LF- Shoeless Joe Jackson
CF- Mickey Mantle
RF- Hank Aaron
DH- Babe Ruth

LHP- Sandy Koufax
RHP- Roger Clemens
CP- Mariano Rivera

I'd take Brooks Robinson and at least 3 other guys ahead of A Rod at the hot corner. He can hit, but his defense is average and he is worthless in the playoffs.

Well if we were talking playoffs, then Jeter at SS, Bench at C, Brock in the OF, Bob Gibson at P.

I switch my choice. Barry Bonds for LF.

A-Rod is a much better hitter than the other 3B, that he'll do all right. I think he defense is criticized too much. Last year he was average, maybe a little more. He was horrible in 2006, but that was a fluke. He was a near-Gold Glover in 2005, finishing 2nd to Eric Chavez. Granted he's not Schmidt, Robinson, Nettles with the glove, but they weren't him with the bat. Of course, no one would complain about having any one of them on a team.

To me the problem with the "greatest at each position" debates is that invariably they judge players on about a 90/10 split between offense and defense. Yeah, such an assembled team may not ever have to worry about defense because they could out bash any opposition, but I have a hard time ignoring defense to such a degree because it's half the game.

That's why I'll take Ozzie Smith at SS even with his 28 career homers. If not The Wizard I'd go with someone like Luis Aparicio. I agree completely about Brooks Robinson at 3B, he'd be my guy there too. It's hard not to go with Johnny Bench at catcher since he revolutionized the position. He was the first to use a hinged catcher's mitt and the one-handed catching style that everyone uses now. Before Bench everyone used the old style pancake catcher's mitt and caught two-handed. And he retired as the most prolific power hitting catcher in MLB history.

I like the Mick in CF, but it's hard not to go with Willie Mays - who was widely considered the best all around player to ever play before Bonds discovered steroids. Joe Dimaggio is obviously another great option in center, and I think it is easy to forget just how dominant offensively *and* defensively Ken Griffey Jr. was before his body started breaking down. I also really like Ichiro. I'd take Ted Williams in LF over Shoeless Joe, or as much as I can't stand him (and never could) - Barry Bonds -lol-

No arguments from me about Gehrig, Hornsby, and Aaron :)

Obviously we're talking about all-time greats though and they're all amazing players.

I won't argue any of those points... I will start another thread for this topic though.

You can also get a lot of good info on the official Hall of Fame site, and probably the best statistical reference is baseball-reference.com

Welcome aboard! :)

Wow, nice team. I personally wouldn't put Clemens in their as he was never in his prime as a Yankee. Unfourtenetly, I don't know much about the Yanks history besides the past few years and the players Lou Gehrig played with (I read a great book on him.). Maybe Guidry would be a better choice just because he was a Yankee for all/most of his career.
