If you're going for bookworm level 3 to unlock abilities then you should buy whatever you feel you need ability wise. If not, I would probably go with Fire Arch for the 5 power, and I personally always buy falcon shoes for the 2SPD they give.

The Graduate's Charm doubles the amount of bookworm experience from mind training. You reach Bookworm Lv4 about a full year earlier with it than without, meaning you can get pressurized strength training that much earlier.

Concentration Ear Plugs 1 2, and Hyper Recovery Supplements.

no. The steel spike reduce your run speed and don't offer enough of a boost to your power to be a positive addition. One or two points of power don't mean as much as one points of speed.

I disagree. Steel Spikes add +5 power with a reduction of 1 run speed. You can get +1 run speed in one turn if you gamble for it. On the other hand, at higher levels of power, the upgrade cost for +5 power is a lot more than you can earn from one turn of weight training.

It's a worthwhile trade if you aren't going for max run speed.

maybe you're right. I never buy them because for whatever reason, i can't stand losing any run speed. Just obsessive about speed I guess.

I usually do what tgjason does and get the falcon spikes. I'll take a guy who can score from second on a single than a guy with a little extra pop any day.

Depends on what type of player you're making. A prototypical "power hitter" usually isn't going to have better than a 12 on RUN SPD, usually it'll be a good amount lower than that. The guys that can steal bases and hit for a lot of power are the exception rather than the norm.

I agree with Odawali, when you look at the stats getting +5 to PWR for a -1 on RUN SPD is a great tradeoff. The only time it doesn't make sense to do that is if you're going for 15 RUN SPD. Otherwise, you can always increase RUN SPD by 1 with a single turn. By the end of year 1 you can't get +5 to PWR in a single turn if you're boosting it first. By the time your PWR is B or above it'll take 3-4 turns to get +5 in PWR.

What I'm saying is there is little difference between a guy with 180 Power and a guy with 185 power as opposed to a guy with 11 speed and a guy with 12 speed. A guy with 12 speed can be a base stealer in this game when a guy with C speed is marginal.

I guess I agree though that if you already have some speed and you're on the cusp of getting A power, you might as well get steel spikes to put you over the top.

But also in Season Mode you upgrade Run Speed faster than Power. After a few months you can take a C runner to a B runner, but you could only take a 180 Power to a 185, which as you said, is only marginally better.

As a general rule, stats on the 255 scale should be gained mostly though success mode. Stats on the 15 scale are easier to raise by virtue of the smaller scale to see a Rank change.

I will add that the Steel Spikes are so worth it. Power hitters aren't fast, and many of them are only average at best on D, so I don't worry about that so much either. I take the Steel Spikes, and my all time favorite bat... THE MIGHTY!!!

Sure your Con takes a hit, but you can gamble that back fast, or make Dave Kingman and let it go. Making a power hitter is the easiest to do IMHO, and is much more fun to play in Success Mode.

Meh, I'll stick with my Falcons and use the left over speed to gamble for better defensive skills. I've still yet to make a character with over 100 power I couldn't hit one over the fence with on all-star and normal hitting so I suppose it's really just all up to how you want to make your character and your own personal skill level and play style.

In that vain there's nothing I hate more than giving up a bad run because of a marginal defensive player.

I don't really see it as a question of how important power is to gameplay (though that might be a relevant debate in itself); Bigc21 is interested in items that complement a homerun hitter.
