I had only Yes and Challenge cards (3) when Bison came to offer the bat, so I had to take it.

What happens if I let Willy pitch for me? Will it reduce my stat boosts?

Yes, it will just like batting, but Willy has some strong pitches, so it may not be all that bad, especially at the beginning. 3rd year definitely say no.

Back from the dead...

I got to the year three game with the Cheater Rings, with Alvin the traitor, and was stuck with Willy. So I challenged him and he took over Zero Gibson. That was a good stat boost when I shut the CR's out.

Willy can be useful for something after all.
