Don't know where to post this: but it's random:

When boosting abilities like contact, top speed, arm strength etc. where the top is 15 or 105 it requires another upgrade before the ability is "acquired" For example when I boosted top speed it went from 104 to 105. I boosted it again and the number was still 105 but instead of faded out numbers, there was a green bar saying 'acquired' like with abilities. Why? Is there a difference?

oh, and, how do you get the Star ability?

I have noticed that only happens when I have a bat/ glove/ shoes that increase abilities. If you have the items equipped you will see the stat booster figured in to your totals when you go to power up. So if your shoes give you a +3 speed, then you will be able to power speed up three times beyond 15 before Acquired will appear.

You can get Star sometimes by becoming captain in YR2, or in any number of random events, dates, or at work even.

That's right; while you may have an ability at 15 because of a certain bat/glove/spikes equipped, you don't have a true 15. You can keep upgrading that stat even though you technically are maxed, but there's no reason to do so because as long as you keep the items equipped the stat boosts will carry over after you finish success mode.

As for Star, I believe that your Ladies Man rating influences the likelihood of obtaining it, since Ladies Man not only refers to your luck with the ladies but your popularity in general. Just a hunch.

I've gotten "Star" almost always from Becky during Y2 Valentine's or upon becoming "Prince of Baseball" (Lvl 4 Ladies Man). I'm sure you can just sv/rld before Y2 valentine's would be the easiest and quickest. I prefer not having star, though as it gives nothing, maybe all-star votes? but potentially drives up salary.

And about using items to max out abilities...I always wondered if during the season you broke your bat, would you lose the Ability boost? For instance, I always buy the X Shot at the end of Success mode, giving me a +2 in CON. What if during the season you break your bat in a game. Do you think your CON rating would now drop 2 points? I've never broken my own bat, but existing players break their bats all the time. Wonder if anyone has experience with it...

I never actually thought about that. That would be a huge let down if that happened.

It absolutely does go down, I had that happen to me - Perfect-S sawed off my wood "The Mighty," and I lost the 10 points in PWR it gave me and got CON points back. I was NOT a happy camper. I've also never bought another wood bat, I always go for the aluminum versions now.

I was actually talking about in Season Mode. At least in Success Mode you can buy another bat, but in Season Mode, you're s*#t outta luck. Has that ever happened to you?

So why use a wooden bat instead of an aluminum one?

Shouldn't there be some advantage?

I'm talking about after you've completed everything. The screen that allows you to change setttings, appearances, etc. There is also the last shop, but it only sells wood bats as you're going on to the pros. It's an easy way to get a last minute boost before reegistering your player. But if your bat breaks during the season, after you've registered him, I don't know if the stats then revert back to before the Bat boost...

I'm pretty sure you don't actually carry the equipment over after success mode, just the stat increases. Breaking a bat wouldn't do anything.

The bat stuff is interesting. That there is a specific item to prevent wooden bats from breaking (Bat Shining towel) makes me wonder if there are advantages to wooden bats? There should be some incentive to take the risk on them. The only one I can think of of course is the abilities being more easily unlocked.

Granted it's not much of an increase in difficulty (the chance of breaking your bat), but to me it looked like they were just trying to throw a curveball in there and give you one more thing to worry about while you were trying to finish up your player (since wooden bats only appear in the latter half of success mode). This is the first I've heard about learning abilities faster with them, and it makes perfect sense. Has it been confirmed or is it just a theory right now?

No, it's just something I thought of and will be looking out for.

The thing is I can't remember if any of the bat abilities took two or more games to unlock in the first place. If you're an S&L Gambler with Goggles + Rookie Charm, it may not make a difference. Though it might make it easier for the 2nd year captain route if you could unlock abilities with just one or two ABs.

I got a job from the loan shark. You get asked to run shady errands for him. I even ran into a Britney Spears reference (receiving a white envelope with tickets for a "Whitney Blears concert").

Yeah, I think wooden bats are better for learning abilities. The abilities usually start with 2,3,4 orange boxes filled in other than 0,1,2.
