I never like the argument that Superman is a boring character because there isn't a threat of death. I honestly kind of like it. He doesn't have to protect earth at all, he could just as easily rule it, but he choose to serve humanity. Now, the "no threat of death" can make for boring Superman stories as you don't feel any suspense and that is why it is really hard to make a good Superman movie/TV show or even a comic book. I like the character, but I don't think I could ever write for him.
