"The NFL referees' union wants improved salaries, better retirement benefits and resolution of some other logistical issues. The NFL is proposing a pension freeze and a higher 401(k) match; the union is balking because of the greater risk to the nest egg that comes with the loss of a defined benefit."

Got that from a news article on Yahoo, in case you guys need clarification on the reasoning behind the strike. There's also the matter of hiring more officials/crews (which would allow the league to make the refs take more bye weeks, so to speak). Of course, I don't know what ALL of that quote above means, mainly the full context of the reason the union isn't liking the 401(k), but you get the gist of it.

Though I also acknowledge they're out of place and trying their best, some of the calls made are just inexcusable. The MNF debacle has been dubbed the Inaccurate Reception, and rightfully so. I believe it was Ogletree of the Cowboys who was tripped up by the ref throwing his hat into the endzone (lucky for us Eagles fans ;)), and it's obvious if they're being scrutinized by as many fans, coaches, and players as they have been, something needs to be changed. I think each call that the substitute refs don't discuss should ultimately be reviewed (at least plays that could be game-changing) by a replay judge who has experience to ensure that the right call is made. Or something like that. :)

Luckily there's reports out there that a deal is close and the normal refs could come back by Sunday.

Mike Sando, reporter and blogger for ESPN, has Ed Hochuli, the leader of the regular referees, at #4 on his MVP watch this week, behind only Matty Ice, Eli and Flacco. I kid you not.

And yes, they're like fishes a bit out of water here, but their performance has been beyond bad. It's been an embarrassment to a league that is usually much more smoothly run and managed than the other major sports leagues, and a huge blemish on the entire season.

I think they're doing their best but it's really bad.

By the way, have anyone else heard that the NFL is threatening to kneel on every play and have the game end in a tie if the refs don't agree to the contracts?

Absolutely horrible. They've irreparably skewed the entire season by this point with calls like the one for the MNF game, and with each week seem to get only worse. There was one game, I forget who, where a ref threw his hat into the end zone (I guess because he didn't have his flag right there on him or was quick enough to the draw for it), and the receiver tripped on the hat, twisted his leg a bit, and missed a touchdown catch. It's just ridiculous, and if that's "trying their best" I shudder to think of what their non-A game is.

Cowboys-Bucs, that was Ogletree slipping.

The refs aren't doing BAD, they're doing BADLY.

And the official refs are now back, having agreed to a deal overnight, primarily thanks to these sucky replacement refs.

How would I know? Who would voluntarily watch football games?

Both of the above statements need citations. Otherwise, I doubt their credibility.

You don't think a lot of people in America watch football?

And, you know, because it's entertaining.
