He'll get his fair share of strikeouts, that's for sure, but he walks way too many batters (8 BB in 9.1 IP)

he hasn't actually blown any saves (yet) but...he's a member of the LineDrives bullpen. he's bound to blow a save soon

GOLDSCHMIDT WATCH: First baseman Paul Goldschmidt came into the game 0 for his last 19, and went 0 for 4, so he is now hitless in his last twenty-three at-bats. “He’ll get another break tomorrow, and with that combined with the ASB, we hope that he can shake this slump and get back to being the Paul we know,” manager Parker Bernhart said.

The rookie skipper also said that Taylor Featherston’s versatility and recent hot streak have helped keep him on the field and in the lineup. Featherston, who has started four of the last five games, has gotten 9 hits in 24 at-bats (.375) over his last nine games, scoring four runs, driving in five, and hitting two home runs and two doubles over that span. His average has soared from .231 to .275, his OBP from .226 to .317, and his SLG from .327 to .447. “Taylor’s been really valuable for us this year, it’s nice to have a guy who can play multiple positions, swings the bat well and all that. He’s been seeing the ball well lately and been catching it well out at second, third, short, wherever we put him, so it’s good to get him in there.”

Also, RHPs Chase Anderson and Ken Giles were optioned to Scottsdale (AAA). With the All-Star break coming up, Las Vegas will be able to skip Anderson’s next two turns without missing a beat, and then recall him for his next start after the ten-day wait period is up (he will make one start in AAA while down there). Giles, on the other hand, was demoted due to ineffectiveness, as the team hopes he can get his command back in the minors. To take their spots on the active roster, Las Vegas purchased the contracts of right-handers Aaron Barrett (2-0, 2 SV, 3.32 ERA, 41 K, 11 BB in 21.2 IP) and Brad Brach (0-1, 3 SV, 2.33 ERA, 35 K, 3 BB in 19.1 IP), both of whom will work as relievers.

Tomorrow’s projected starters RHP Aaron Sanchez (5-2, 1.92) and RHP Corey Kluber (4-3, 2.01), although Kluber pitched against us in the series opener on Sunday, so that doesn’t make much sense at all. RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-6, 4.53) would be on regular rest if he started, so maybe that’s who will fill in?

The Canadian League beat the USA League 4-2 in the All-Star Game. Jose Altuve was named MVP, going 3 for 5. It was stupid and meaningless, and it also completely messed up our rotation plans, so we’re going to do one of those Bullpen Day things where we start a reliever and stuff. We’re facing the 22-24 Padres, with Matt Andriese, a right-hander with a 5-2 record and 2.54 ERA, on the mound for them. They’re just two games behind us in the division, so these are must-win games.

We extended RHP Chris Archer (1 year, $900,000) and outfielder A.J. Pollock (3 years, $3,000,000).

ok holy cow that was incredible

first off, they scored on a homer by Carl Crawford in the seventh off Felix Hernandez, who was on his A game today—he went 8 innings allowing only six hits, one run, and one walk while striking out seven. then Juan Lagares tied the game with a solo shot in the eighth off of Chris Heston, who was equally impressive (7.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 HB, 9 K). Oh, and yes, Heston did hit two batters, and by two batters, I mean one batter twice, and by one batter I mean Rusney Castillo, who will most certainly be sore tomorrow. In the 9th, I brought on Greg Holland to keep the game tied, but he threw one pitch, got one out, and suffered a rotator cuff injury; he’ll be out for at least a few weeks as he recovers from that. Brad Brach stepped up and struck out the next two batters, and after we went down in order, it was on to extra innings!

We traded zeros again in the tenth and eleventh innings, but in the twelfth, Evan Scribner gave up a leadoff triple to Crawford, who scored on a deep fly ball by the next batter, Prince Fielder. Nolan Arenado followed with a base hit, but Scribner got Jose Ramirez to ground out and Gregory Polanco to strike out to end the threat. In the bottom of the 12th, Tucker Barnhart was due to lead off, but I pinch-hit Yasmani Grandal for him since he was 0 for 4 and he delivered with a game-tying homer! Aaron Barrett pitched a clean 13th, allowing only one hit (a double), and Drew Storen took over to face Justin Turner and whoever was after Justin Turner in the bottom half.

Moral of the story: Justin Turner does not care for your 88-mile-per-hour slider at the knees. Justin Turner cares only for walk-off home runs.

also, new power rankings, we’re 6th again, yay. A-Rod only batted six times last week but he was 4 for 6 and two of those were homers so he got POTW, Jon Jay was 7 for 11 with 4 RBI to collect the Canadian POTW award. also, we put Holland on the 15-day DL and called up our old pal Ken Giles, either he or another reliever will be sent down in a few days to make room for Chase Anderson though

alright, so we scored a run in the first inning, Rusney Castillo hit an RBI single, but the Padres tied it up in the fifth on an RBI single by Dee Gordon. These two bullpens were exhausted after a thirteen-inning game last night, and ours was even more tired due to the Bullpen Day two days ago, but both starting pitchers were very effective: Daniel Norris pitched six strong innings, and Aaron Sanchez one-upped him with seven solid innings before turning it over to the ‘pen. Mike Dunn (2-4), who threw 3 pitches two days ago and 33 pitches last night, ended up pitching again for the Padres, while Evan Scribner (2-0), who tossed two innings last night, came in for the LineDrives, with only Dan Otero available (save for an emergency situation) behind him. In the fourteenth inning, Prince Fielder hit a deep triple with one out, and Nolan Arenado hit a deep fly to center to score him. But this team wasn’t done. Brett Gardner drew a walk against the exhausted left-hander Dunn, and after a flyout by Justin Turner, Francisco Lindor hit a line-drive double, putting two runners in scoring position with one out and putting both managers in tough situations. With the pitcher’s spot up, Las Vegas skipper Parker Bernhart had to decide between Zack Cozart, hitting a paltry .130, and Tucker Barnhart, hitting .262 but representing the LineDrives’ only other catching option after emergency third catcher Taylor Featherston was used to pinch-hit earlier in the game. And once he selected Barnhart to come in, Padres manager (whoever) had to decide between letting Dunn face Barnhart or intentionally walking him to load the bases for Juan Lagares.

He chose to let the southpaw face Barnhart, who promptly laced a two-run walk-off single to center. “I was thinking too far ahead, would rather face him and Lagares with two on than potentially have to face Matt Carpenter with the bases juiced,” the skipper said after the game, “but that plan backfired. I take the blame for that one, we’ll be back at it tomorrow and hopefully we can get back to winning games.”

An interesting note: LineDrives first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was starting to close in on Eugenio Velez’s streak of 46 consecutive hitless at-bats, but after 34 straight, he hit a ground-ball single in the tenth inning to snap the streak. Also notable, catcher Yasmani Grandal was 0 for 6 with five strikeouts.

Next up is a three-game series in Nashville. The first game will feature right-hander Chris Archer (5-0, 0.65) and left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu (5-1, 1.89) in what figures to be a pitching duel.

After the game, right fielder Jay Bruce was activated from the 15-day DL and infielder Zack Cozart was designated for assignment.

let’s just sum it up by saying that with 2 on and no outs in the 8th, Dan Otero gave up a double to Anthony Rendon, a homer to Brian McCann, and a homer to Michael Saunders, taking the game from a 3-0 Las Vegas lead to a 5-3 deficit that quickly.

wasted a nice three-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt too

Enrique Hernandez was recalled to replace Otero (who was DFAed very hard), but he will probably be sent back down tomorrow when RHP Chase Anderson is called up.

also, after a brief rehab assignment, Hector Olivera will make his major league debut tomorrow for the Sounds, that’s pretty cool I guess

also, it looks like we’re headed to the playoffs, our 26-24 first-half record barely kept us first in the division, apparently the second half is going to start now, in the middle of this series, cool

Matt Carpenter was 4 for 6, Brett Gardner hit two home runs…and the LineDrives lost yet another extra-inning game, 7-6, because Ken Giles and Evan Scribner do not want to keep their major-league jobs. Joey Votto hit the walk-off homer, by the way, because I’m an idiot who strayed from the game plan by not giving him a free pass every at-bat.

Giles, who allowed three runs over two-thirds of an inning, and Enrique Hernandez, who was 0 for 2, were optioned to Scottsdale after the game. Chase Anderson, who will start tomorrow, was recalled, and fellow right-hander Justin De Fratus (1.17 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 19 G) was purchased; both were at Scottsdale.

we won 4-0, Grandal hit an RBI double in the first inning and scored when Jay Bruce hit a dinger, our final run scored in the 8th on a double by Francisco Lindor. Also, Brett Gardner was 4 for 4 with a stolen base. For Nashville, Andrew McCutchen went 4 for 5 and Joey Votto was walked each of the four times he came up to bat because he’s ridiculously good.

Our next series is in Brooklyn. Friday’s pitching matchup features right-handers Felix Hernandez (3-5, 3.72) and Brandon McCarthy (4-3, 3.66).
