Season Analysis (Thru August 5th)

2016 has been and continues to be a great season for the Friars. The Pads are 71-42 so far, leading the NL West by 10.5 games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jedd Gyorko has been fantastic this year for San Diego, batting .290 with 24 homers and 78 RBI. He has doubled 30 times, leading the Pads. Jacoby Ellsbury has also put huge numbers into the offense, batting .297 with 18 home runs, 55 RBI, 28'doubles, a league leading 11 triples, and stealing 23 bases. Andre Ethier and Willie Dickinson have both contributed a lot to the team as well, Ethier hitting .286 with 20 shots and 59 RBI, Dickinson batting .263 with 20 bombs and 45 RBI. Prospects Rex Jones and Joey Acaccia have also contributed to the offense in few at bats, Jones (5-10 3B RBI), Acaccia (16-42 22B 3HR 5RBI). The pitching from Robbie Erlin has been phenomenal as he continues in the running for the NL Cy Young Award. He is 15-3 with a 2.81 ERA. The rest of the rotation consists of Johnson (10-5 4.43), Cashner (8-4 4.00), Aceves (7-6 4.52), and Kelly (5-5 3.95). Tyler Clippard has been incredible as the team's closer this year going 42-47 in save opportunities.

Padres Waiver Trade Cabrera

It has been expected since June that the Padres were going to try to move shortstop Everth Cabrera in some way. Today, August 11th, Cody Cole announced that Everth Cabrera had been dealt. He reportedly will be on his way to Detroit to join the Tigers club in their playoff push while prospects, Todd Rodriguez (SP), Luis Reyes (SP), and Thomas Harrison (3B) will head to the Padres minor league system.

Hitting Contagious for Pads, Kelly throws shutout
August 12th, 2016

Minneapolis, MN -- Casey Kelly's stuff was absolutely brilliant as was the Padres offense as the Padres routed the Twins last night. The Padres combined for 16 hits and 10 runs as well as 4 walks. Jedd Gyorko doubled for the 33rd time of the season, Dickinson for the 14th. Ellsbury hit his league-leading 12th triple, and Saltalamacchia and Dickinson tacked on homers 17th and 21st respectively.

Kelly went out there last night and was effective against the Twins batters from the first inning on. Kelly struck out 7 and walked 1 in his 7-hit shutout. Kelly got his 7th win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.75.

Pads rally late, not enough to overcome Phils
August 14th, 2016

Philadelphia, PN -- The Padres barely lost to the Phillies last night. Andrew Cashner put up another shaky outing, which has become quite a habit for him. The major blow of the game for Cashner was the 2-R HR he gave up to Will Bradshaw in the 6th after the Padres tied the game in the fourth. The Padres rallied late in the ninth, down 6-3'to begin the inning. Tommy Medica pinch-hit for pitcher Nick Vincent and smoked a 2-R HR. Chris Denorfia, the next batter roped a single. The next guy, Joey Acaccia, pinch-hitting for Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove a single to right field but Denorfia was thrown out trying to get to third for the second out. The next batter, Jedd Gyorko smoked a deep fly ball to right that was tracked down to end the game.

Chris Denorfia was 2-2 in the game, coming on as a pinch-hitter for Andre Etheir in the 7th. Salty went 2-4 for the Padres, not contributing much other than a double. Jedd Gyorko went 2-5 with an RBI. Yonder Alonso also smashed a solo homer, his 18th of the season. Tommy Medica's pinch-hit homer in the ninth, was his 7th of the season. Andrew Cashner's record dropped to 8-6 with the loss.

Clippard blows save, Heyward hits walk-off
August 18th, 2016

Atlanta, GA -- Tyler Clippard blew the save coming in with a one-run lead in the ninth. When Cippard was handed the ball, his job was to hold the opposition. He could not do that last night. Ultimately, Jayson Heyward ended up with a walk-off homer to win it 4-3 for the playoff seeking Braves. Jedd Gyorko had a solid game for the Padres, going 2-3 with an RBI double, his 35th of the season, and a triple, his 5th. Nick Swisher belted an RBI single, and Reynaldo Villanueva crushed a solo homer, his second, in his first at-bat in the bigs since July. Tyler Clippard ended up with the loss, making him 2-5 on the season. Aceves pitched 6 innings of 2-run, 4-hit ball.
