This log is from roughly a year ago, when the Red Sox weren't the defending champs.

BOS (1-1) - Matt Crawford
NYY (1-1) - Andy Pettitte

Matt Crawford got into a jam in the first, but got out of the inning allowing only one run. In the second, Pete Grossman tied it up with a leadoff, first-pitch home run. Two batters later, Tucker Davis crushed one over the left-field wall with a runner on, making it a 3-1 lead for the Sox. Nick Wallace followed in the third inning with a solo homer to center field. Crawford got into and out of trouble again in the 3rd, and the Red Sox got a runner on base, but Isaiah Hightower lined into a double play to end the fourth inning. The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th, and a 4-6-3 double play led to a run, but Crawford got out of yet another tough situation. He couldn't escape in the 6th, and was taken out for Adam McDougal, who gave up a three-run homer to Alex Rodriguez. No one else scored for the remainder of the game.

After our first series with the Yankees, I called Colt and Shane into my office. "I'm sorry to tell you, but you have been assigned to Pawtucket, our Triple-A team," I told them. Colt ran out of the office, trying to get some speed work in as usual. Shane was clearly upset, but understood.

Tim and Nate were called up to take their spots. I knew Tim had worked hard down in AAA, and needed a backup second baseman, so the moves were easy to make.

The team packed up and headed for the airport to fly to Toronto.

BOS (1-2) - Tyler Richardson
TOR (1-2) - Mark Buehrle

On the very first pitch of the game, struggling infielder Brett Bell hit a home run to give Boston an early lead. The Sox followed with two outs, then two singles, before Will Griffin was thrown out at 2nd on a Tucker Davis hit to right field (which was scored as a 9-3-6 groundout). Pete Grossman hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center, in the third inning, but Colby Rasmus countered with a solo homer of his own. Tim Cormier got a leadoff double and advanced to third base, but Isaiah Hightower missed the bunt on a suicide-squeeze attempt and he was tagged out. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Edwin Encarnacion slugged a two-run homer to right. Will Griffin led off the 5th with a home run just over the right-field wall. Andrew Cooper followed by reaching on an error, and then Isaiah Hightower hit a home run to left, prompting a pitching change. Steve Delabar entered in relief, and allowed a triple to Brett Bell and a pinch-hit RBI double by Matt Lowe before getting Josh Cooper out. Heath Cooper came in and got into some trouble before allowing an RBI single by Edwin Encarnacion and a 3-run home run to Brett Lawrie, but Jared Jones got the third out and Griffin hit a home run to give the Red Sox a one-run lead, followed by a bunt single by Jack Gray. Tim Cormier followed with a triple, and scored on a throwing error that sent the ball out of play. Jayson McDougal pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, capped by a diving catch by Jack Gray. McDougal reached triple digits five times, registering as high as 102 mph on the official radar gun. The game lasted for 4 hours and 18 minutes despite only going 9 innings, but did not break the record of 4:45 set by Boston and the Yankees in August 2006.

(Note: this goes with the "To Be Continued" storyline. These events take place a few days after Carson's hiring, not in April)

Unfortunately, while we were waiting, the manager of the complex made an announcement. “I am sorry to inform you that the building simply has too much water in it at this time, and we cannot resume normal living conditions. I have made arrangements with two local hotels, the Residence Inn Fenway and the Colonnade Hotel. You can come up to the front desk and sign up for a room. The first six at the Fenway hotel will get a room with a view of the ballpark.” Jackson and I rushed up to the counter to sign up for one of the coveted rooms. But before doing that, he called his friend Simon, our #1 starter. Simon had an apartment in the area, but not in the same building as Jackson. He said we could bring our stuff and go stay at his place for however long we needed to. Jackson told an employee to call us when the building was ready, and we headed on foot to Simon's apartment building. Well, I went on foot, and Jackson used his skateboard, but either way, we got there in just ten minutes. Simon welcomed us into his apartment on the third floor. The place was smaller than Jackson’s but still had two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. I had left some stuff in Jackson's apartment, but I had brought my bag, with my laptop, phone and chargers. I also had my wallet, and everything I had bought at the shopping center.

"Remember, while I am the general manager, don't think that this will buy a spot on the team," I told Simon. "That's what I want, a fair competition, if I do well, I make it, if not, well, you know..." Simon jerked his thumb, as an umpire would to signal a batter being out.

We lodged at Simon's place for three days until Jackson's building would let us in. "Thanks for having us," I told Simon on my way out. "Anytime," he said. Jackson and Simon had taught me how to skateboard a little, and I used Jackson's board to get back to the apartments, with Jackson walking.

BOS (2-2) - Reese Anderson
TOR (1-3) - Esmil Rogers

Four straight hits, capped by a two-run double by Dylan Brown and two-run homer by Pete Grossman, gave the Sox a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Jose Bautista responded in the 4th with a two-run bomb to left. A leadoff double by Brown in the 6th forced the Jays to bring in Steve Delabar. Two batters later, a Josh Cooper infield single scored Brown, but his brother Andrew bounced into a double play to end the inning. Jared Jones got into trouble in the 7th, allowing two runs, but got out of it with the lead intact. Josh Kelly gave up a leadoff hit in the 8th, but recovered by inducing a double play. With one out in the ninth, Nick Wallace pinch-hit, and laced a triple to right-center. Dan Crawford came off the bench and popped up a bunt, but Toronto couldn't get to it, and Wallace scored, with Crawford safe at first. Crawford stole second on the next pitch, and Isaiah Hightower reached on a bunt single. Hightower was picked off, but Tim Cormier reached on Boston's third infield single of the inning, scoring Crawford.

RULES OF THE GAME

Saves:
Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or
- (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Condition 3(a) specifies why Jayson McDougal did not record a save, as he pitched only two-thirds of an inning.

BOS (3-2) - Simon Young
TOR (1-4) - Brandon Morrow

This game featured plenty of highlight plays from the Red Sox outfield. Tucker Davis started off the first by throwing out two base-runners at third, and Tim Cormier made a leaping grab at the wall in the second. Cormier hit a double in the third, advanced on a sac fly, and stole home on a bad pitch that was meant to be a bunt attempt. Will Griffin whacked the first pitch of the fourth inning to right field for a home run. Back-to-back singles by Dan Crawford and Jack Gray plated two runs in the fourth inning as well.

BAL (3-3) - Wei-Yin Chen
BOS (4-2) - Matthew Hanson

It was a pitching duel until Nick Wallace hit a homer over the Green Monster in the fourth inning for the first run of the game. Will Griffin followed with a solo shot to center, and two hits and two errors scored another run. Chris Davis teed off on a fastball in the seventh, driving it to center for Baltimore's first run of the game. Nate McLouth hit an RBI double in the 8th, and Davis drove him in on a single two batters later, but was thrown out at second by Tim Cormier. Matthew Hanson got a scare in the 9th, as Manny Machado hit a long fly ball that was barely foul down the left-field line, but escaped with a 1-2-3 inning. Pete Grossman led off the ninth with a base hit, and advanced on a pickoff attempt that went out of play - Darren O'Day's second such error of the game - and to third on a Cormier groundout. Isaiah Hightower came up with two outs and laced a single into left field, scoring Grossman for the walk-off win! The Orioles committed five errors in the game.

Transactions

Recalled CF Jeff Lowe from AAA Pawtucket. Optioned 3B Josh Cooper to AAA Pawtucket.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Reporter: Mr. Harris, what's the idea behind this transaction?
Carson: We wanted to get a fifth outfielder, and Josh [Cooper] has been struggling at the plate. We wanted to get Josh some more at-bats down in Triple-A.
Reporter: Some insight on the game?
Carson: Well, I thought we did well, but you'd have to ask John for any specific points.
Farrell: I liked the way Matthew threw the ball today, certainly in the first six innings, he faltered a bit towards the end, but nothing too concerning. Plus, it's always nice to get a day off for the entire bullpen.
Reporter: What about the bats?
Farrell: They really went cold after the fourth inning, but our guys got some hits at the right time and Isaiah was able to get the walk-off.

BAL (3-4) - Chris Tillman
BOS (5-2) - Matt Crawford

Another pitching battle brewed until the fifth, when Dan Crawford hit a two-out single, and Isaiah Hightower followed with an RBI double off the Green Monster. In the seventh inning, a pair of two-out hits and some aggressive baserunning scored a run. Jayson McDougal got into some real trouble in the ninth, walking two batters before a hard, sinking liner was hit to left field. Tim Cormier dove to make the catch, and threw out a runner at third for the final two outs of the game.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Reporter: John, that's two straight big games from your starters. Obviously it's good to rest the bullpen, but is this something you expected coming in?
Farrell: Honestly, I didn't know what to expect - this is a group of 25 rookies, and it's great that we've been able to polish that into a solid product for the fans.
Reporter: Any thoughts on the ongoing position battles?
Farrell: We're going to continue what we've done with Matt and Nick at short, alternating every two games, and rotating Andrew and Dan behind the plate, maybe getting Dan some work at first base. We've been resting Will every fourth game, that's been working well so we'll continue with that. I think we're just going forward with the same plan we've had.
