BAL (3-5) - Jason Hammel
BOS (6-2) - Tyler Richardson

Baltimore scored an early run on an Adam Jones sacrifice fly in the first inning, but Boston struck back in the bottom half on a grand slam from Tucker Davis. A single from Dylan Brown scored the game's last run in the second inning, as both teams cooled down at the plate after that.

TB (6-3) - Jeff Niemann
BOS (7-2) - Reese Anderson

After a Desmond Jennings double in the 3rd, James Loney hit a homer over the Green Monster in left. Jason Bourgeois led off the fourth inning with a solo home run of his own. Pete Grossman countered in the 5th with a homer over the Monster that traveled 469 feet. Ben Zobrist doubled in the 6th, but Isaiah Hightower threw him out at home on a Jose Molina hit. Nick Wallace cut the Rays' lead to one in the seventh inning with a home run off the Pesky Pole in right field. Dylan Brown followed with a triple off the center-field wall, and Will Griffin drove him in with a one-out double. Griffin advanced on a groundout, and Dan Crawford reached on an infield single, scoring Griffin to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. Wallace hit his second home run of the game in the 8th inning, again to right field. Josh Kelly came in for the ninth and blew the save opportunity, allowing the Rays to tie the game on a two-run hit by Yunel Escobar, but Jared Jones stranded a pair of runners and got the final two outs of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Tim Cormier hit a ball over the right-field wall for Boston's second walk-off hit in four games!

LHP Jayson McDougal: McDougal remains the Sox' closer, assured manager John Farrell. "We just wanted to get him in a little appearance, didn't want or need a full inning out of him after the tough save the other night," Farrell said.

TB (6-4) - David Price
BOS (8-2) - Simon Young

Nate Gray led off the first with a long single, followed by Nick Wallace's third home run in two games. Will Griffin made it back-to-back homers with his 7th round-tripper of the season. It took Tampa Bay until the fourth inning to strike back, on a Luke Scott solo home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Lowe hit a pinch-hit homer to extend Boston's lead to three runs. Nick Wallace led off the 8th with a base hit, and Griffin hit his second homer of the game in the next at-bat. Matt Lowe followed his first AB with a second home run, this time a three-run shot to right-center off Juan Oviedo. Heath Cooper pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the Sox' 8th consecutive win.

TB (6-5) - Matt Moore
BOS (9-2) - Matthew Hanson

Brett Bell singled and swiped two bases before scoring on a Will Griffin single in the first. A failed pickoff attempt on Desmond Jennings led to an advance to second, and a James Loney single drove him in to score in the third. Pete Grossman hit a double to lead off the 4th inning, and after advancing to third on a Tucker Davis single, scored on a groundout by Tim Cormier. Luke Scott hit a solo homer in the 5th to take the lead. Jared Jones entered in the 7th and promptly surrendered a home run to Jennings. Boston got two base hits to start the ninth inning, but pinch-hitter Matt Lowe hit into a double play and Tim Cormier grounded out, and the Sox took their first loss in nine games.

Transactions

Placed CF Jeff Lowe (finger) on the 15-day DL. Recalled 1B Grant Lawrence from AAA Pawtucket. Optioned P Jared Jones to AAA Pawtucket. Recalled P Scooter Thompson from AAA Pawtucket. Promoted C Sean Brown from AA Portland to AAA Pawtucket. Demoted C Clay Gomes from AAA Pawtucket to AA Portland.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Reporter: How does it feel to lose after that 8-game win streak?
Carson: It sucks, but at the same time, it's good to have that streak in the first place.

FANTASY UPDATES

CF Jeff Lowe: Lowe (finger) was placed on the 15-day DL. Reports suggest that the injury itself is minor, but that it was also the result of a minor scuffle in the locker room before the game. Lowe had been slated in the #9 spot starting in center field, but was replaced by Tucker Davis after his injury. The DL stint is likely more about character issues than the finger itself.

RHP Jared Jones: Jones was demoted to the team's AAA affiliate in Pawtucket. Rumors indicate that Jones was part of the brief locker-room fight resulting in an injury to outfielder Jeff Lowe. Jones had allowed 3 runs over 2 innings in his last three appearances. He will reportedly work as the closer in Pawtucket.

1B Grant Lawrence: Lawrence was recalled from AAA after a two-homer game against the Twins' affiliate. He will likely start at first base and DH a couple times a week, meaning Will Griffin will play less at first and more at the hot corner.

SCOUTING REPORTS

RHP Scooter Thompson: Thompson throws a fastball, knuckle-curve and an original pitch known as the "knuckle screwball" in addition to an occasional "normal" screwball. The fastball is quite possibly the flattest in the majors, but Thompson makes up for it with good control. He looks to be a pitcher who can throw multiple innings without tiring.

1B Grant Lawrence: Grant is the oldest of three brothers in the Boston organization. He is a talented power hitter with a good arm, despite playing first base exclusively.

Jackie Robinson Day

TB (7-5) - Alex Cobb
BOS (9-3) - Matt Crawford

Matt Crawford got into trouble early, but was rescued by an Isaiah Hightower outfield assist and two strikeouts, escaping the first inning with no runs on the board. He couldn't escape in the fourth inning, allowing four runs and leaving after only 3 2/3 innings. Boston scored their first run in the 5th inning on a suicide squeeze by Jack Gray. Hightower doubled in the ninth, and Nick Wallace drove him in with a pinch-hit single, but was caught trying to steal second, and Tucker Davis popped out to end the game.

BOS (9-4) - Tyler Richardson
CLE (10-3) - Josh Tomlin

The Indians scored a pair of runs in the third inning off of two hits, two stolen bases and a Jason Kipnis sac fly. The Red Sox scored in the sixth on an RBI double from Pete Grossman, but despite loading the bases with 1 out, were unable to tie or take the lead. After retiring 12 consecutive batters, Tyler Richardson allowed two unearned runs resulting from a pair of errors and a two-run single by Jason Giambi. Chris Perez entered to close the game in the ninth, but surrendered a base hit to Tucker Davis, a two-run homer to Isaiah Hightower, and the game-tying home run to Dan Crawford. Matt Lowe drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single. Cleveland's fourth pitcher of the inning, Joe Smith, entered and gave up a three-run home run to Pete Grossman. Will Griffin followed with a single, the ninth hit of the inning out of nine batters. Rich Hill entered for the Tribe, marking the fifth pitcher in the inning, the preceding four having recorded no outs. Hill set down three Sox, but Jayson McDougal shut down the Indians to seal the victory.

While Cooper is hitting just .167 on the season, there does not appear to be a viable option in the organization right now, as Brent Lawson is also struggling at the plate in AAA.

Cleveland got the scoring started with a Lonnie Chisenhall homer in the second inning. In the fifth, Boston responded on an RBI groundout from Nick Wallace. BOS (11-4) - Simon Young
CLE (10-5) - Justin Masterson

Nate Gray hit his first major league home run on the first pitch of the ballgame, but Cleveland struck back with a three-run inning, including a two-run homer by Carlos Santana. It took 26 pitches, but Young was able to escape with only three on the board against him. Santana hit another home run in the third inning. A couple of fluky hits scored two runs in the seventh for the Sox. Boston's next two runs weren't fluky, as they came on a Pete Grossman homer. The Indians teed off on Scooter Thompson and Heath Cooper in the 8th, scoring five runs.

KC (6-8) - Jeremy Guthrie
BOS (11-5) - Matthew Hanson

In the first, two runs scored on a Dylan Brown single that led to a two-base error. Later in the inning, Grant Lawrence slugged a home run over the Green Monster. The Sox put up a total of six runs against Guthrie, and drove him out of the game in the 3rd inning. After the Royals put up a run in the sixth inning, Grant Lawrence hit his second homer of the ballgame, also over the Monster. Dylan Brown made it a non-save situation with a two-run home run in the 7th, but Scooter Thompson allowed two runs in mop-up relief, and Jayson McDougal got four outs for his 3rd save of the season.

Reports: Sox to use "tandem-starting"?

Boston recalled right-hander Tanner Hill, assigning fellow righty Scooter Thompson to Pawtucket in the process. One problem: this move gives the major league Sox 6 starting pitchers. Rumors indicate that Boston will keep Simon Young (2-2, 5.32) in the rotation, but use Hill as the primary reliever when he starts. This approach, known as "tandem starting", has been popularized by some of the Houston Astros' minor-league affiliates.

KC (6-9) - James Shields
BOS (12-5) - Matt Crawford

A sac fly in the second drew first blood for the Royals, but Dylan Brown responded with a two-run homer in the 3rd inning. Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer in the 8th to give Kansas City the lead. A homer by Lorenzo Cain extended the lead to four. Yet another two-run shot, from Nick Wallace, brought the Sox within two runs, but Kelvin Herrera stranded two runners.

FANTASY UPDATES

RHP Heath Cooper: After throwing 29 pitches Saturday, Cooper was demoted to Pawtucket. He has made 9 appearances, posting a 13.50 ERA through 6 innings, with 7 strikeouts.

RF Shane Gomes: Gomes is likely to be sent down to make room for RHP Frank Grossman. Gomes is 1-for-11 with four strikeouts in four MLB games (all starts) this season, but the team appears to prefer Jack Gray as the fourth outfielder. Gomes and Gray will both start Sunday afternoon.
