Damon's Hits Walk-Off Homer to Defeat the Mariners

Thanks to some ninth inning heroics by Johnny Damon, the Pirates just barely squeezed by the Mariners, 3-2. The Mariners scored their only runs in the game thanks to a double by Jesus Montero that scored Kendrys Morales, and Franklin Gutierrez hit a single to left that scored Montero. It wasn't until the seventh that the Pirates got their first run on the board when Neil Walker hit a bloop single to shallow center to score Damon from third.

However, the Pirates would enter the bottom of the ninth still down by a run. Russell Martin was the first man up, and he smacked a long fly ball to right that was caught on the warning track. Next batter was outfielder Travis Snider who sliced a curve ball in center, just barely making it by the second baseman. After Snider was the man of the hour. On the first pitch, Damon sent the fastball into stands, just barely clearing the left field wall.

Pirates Fall to the League's Worst Team

It's a sad day in Pittsburgh, as the home town Pirates lost to the former division rivals Astros 3-4. The game started out pretty promising for the Pirates when Russell Martin hit a double to center, plating first baseman Garrett Jones. However, the Astros stuck in the fourth with a solo home run from Brett Wallace and a two run homer from veteran Rick Ankiel to go up by three. In the bottom of the seventh, Martin hit his seventh home run of the year to bring the Pirates back within one. Wallace answered back with his second bomb of the game in the top of the eight, which put the Astros up for good.

Pirates Rough Up Rookie Veal as Rodriguez Throws Shutout

The Pirates were in full control tonight, as they crushed the Red by a score of 11-0. They started off strong with five runs in the first, started by a double from Neil Walker, scoring Travis Snider. After Andrew McCutchen reached on an infield single, and Pedro Alvarez on a error by Zack Cozart, Gaby Sanchez smashed a ball into the left-center gap, good for a bases clearing double. The Pirates were able to plate one more runner that inning thanks to Russell Martin and Jose Tabata ground-outs.

Stan Veal didn't allow another hit after that point, but was pulled after just four inning due to a high pitch count. And once he left, the Pirates bats lit up again. In the fifth, Alvarez hit a three-run home run to deep center. In the sixth, Snider and Walker both hit RBI singles. And in the seventh, Clint Barmes hit a sacrifice fly. However, the Pirates offense didn't even need to score two runs, much less eleven. Wandy Rodriguez pitched like an ace, throwing a complete game shutout with twelve strikeouts! His ERA is down to 3.63, dropping nearly a full point.

The Pirates still have two more games against the Reds, then a three game series against the Braves. But after that is the 2013 MLB draft, where the Pirates have the 13th overall pick. Their last three first round picks (Jameson Taillon, Gerrit Cole, and Marco Kennedy) all look like they will become stars in the big leagues, so let's hope the Pirates can continue their recent success.

Both Clay and Gonzalez were available by pick twelve, but San Diego made the decision easier by taking Clay, leaving us with Gonzalez. Sadly, Ahlswede went nearly twenty too high, so I settled on Carlos Tejeda in the second, who has great potential, but won't be ready for the big leagues until 2016 or '17. These were the rest of my picks.

73. Starter Peter Ramirez, age 21, 60 overall, 75 potential
102. Shortstop Stephen Kim, age 18, 52 overall, 93 potential
132. Left Fielder John McGowan, age 22, 46 overall, 98 potential
162. Third Baseman Robert Fukumori, age 21, 43 overall, 76 potential
192. Second Baseman Joseph Law, age 19, 43 overall, 81 potential

Are you saying it's wrong to talk to a bag of Skittles? Because if so, I'm going to need to rethink a lot of things. :P

I really don't know what the Twins and Tigers were thinking, picking guys whose potentials were lower than their current abilities. Which, I'm not even sure how that's possible!
