Michael Cathaway was torn from sleep by a horrid ringing.

Groggily, his mind searched the room to place its source. Whatever amount of consciousness he had did its best to find the awful sound with the sole purpose of ending its violent assault on the pleasant silence. His left hand fumbled about aimlessly on his nightstand before bumping against a vibrating, box-shaped object.

With sudden realization, Michael snapped awake.

“Hello?” he murmured, doing his best not to sound annoyed.
“Mr. Cathaway, I have something to tell you.”

Michael didn’t recognize the voice on the other end of the phone but decided to avoid the awkward question.

“What is it?”

Michael noticed the man hesitate slightly before speaking.

“It’s… Joe Kennedy.”

As the man spoke, Michael felt himself fall into a dreamlike state. The mystery man told him everything: that Joe Kennedy had been in Florida for a friend’s wedding, that he had woken in the middle of the night - just two hours before this very call - that he had collapsed on the floor of his in-laws, and that he had been taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was almost immediately pronounced dead.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Cathaway. No one should have to hear this kind of thing over the phone like this.”

Michael could hardly believe what he was hearing; a 28-year-old professional athlete, gone just like that.

“Do they know what caused it?”
“I haven’t heard anything. I don’t think so.”
“I-I have to go. Thank you for the info.”
“Yes sir, Mr. Cathaway. Goodnight.”
*beep*

Michael Cathaway sat motionless on the edge of his bed.

Joe Kennedy Found Dead in Brandon, FL
November 24th, 2007
By Zachary Bluth

Late last night around 1:15 AM, Rockies pitcher Joe Kennedy collapsed at his in-laws home in Brandon, Florida, where he was visiting family. He was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead, although no exact cause of death was determined.

Kennedy, 28 at the time of his death, finished his career with a 71-65 record, 878 strikeouts, and a 4.17 ERA. In his final season, he set career highs in all three of those categories as he went 19-10 with a 3.10 ERA and 180 strikeouts.

Kennedy is survived by his pregnant wife Jami and his one-year-old son.

In a brief press conference yesterday evening, Michael Cathaway announced that the Rockies will be wearing Kennedy's initials, JDK, on the left sleeve of all their jerseys for the 2008 season.
