Lowell product Anderson drafted by Sox in 11th round

Former Lowell High School and UMass pitcher Reese Anderson has been selected by the Red Sox in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Anderson will play in rookie ball this year, GM Theo Epstein said, and likely move up if he performs well. Anderson features a 4-seam fastball at about 89 mph to go with a solid changeup and below-average cutter. He is a starting pitcher who had a 1.36 ERA in his senior year with the Minutemen. He will join UMass teammates Matt Guillen (catcher, 27th round) and Scott Burgos (reliever, 3rd round) with the rookie-level Sox affiliate this season.

Sox promote trio of UMass products

Starting pitcher Reese Anderson (11th round, 5-1, 2.06 ERA), catcher Matt Guillen (27th round, .297, 45 RBI), and reliever Scott Burgos (3rd round, 16/17 saves) have all been promoted by new GM Ben Cherington. Anderson and Guillen will advance to High-A while Burgos will play in AA.

After hot start, 3 friends continue to move up in Sox organization

Pitcher Reese Anderson (4-0, 1.11 ERA) and catcher Matt Guillen (.444, 6 RBI) have been promoted to the AA Portland SeaDogs just 7 games into the High-A season. They will join reliever Scott Burgos, who has 3 holds and 2 saves in 8 appearances this season. All three graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2010, and were drafted by the Red Sox in 2011.

Burgos earns yet another promotion

Relief pitcher Scott Burgos, a soft-tossing lefty with some serious stuff, has been promoted to the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox. Burgos had 16 holds and 5 saves in 33 appearances out of the bullpen for the SeaDogs. He will leave behind two former college teammates in catcher Matt Guillen and starting pitcher Reese Anderson.

2013 scouting report: Reese Anderson, SP (#12 prospect in BOS organization)

Anderson was the Red Sox' 11th-round pick in 2011, and has proved that he has the talent to succeed. He has steadily increased his velocity over the past year and a half while moving from rookie ball to high-A and now up to Double-A, where he will start the 2013 season.

---Pitches---

Anderson throws a fastball and a changeup. The one bonus to only throwing these pitches is that he has been able to experiment with his fastball. It has gone from a top speed of about 89 mph in 2011 to 93 mph currently. He can cut or run the fastball while only losing about 5 mph either way. His changeup is a definite weapon at a constant speed of about 80 mph, and he is always working on it. Anderson has below-average movement and average control on his pitches.

---Stamina---

Anderson shows the ability and desire to be a complete-game pitcher every time he is on the mound. He has only been knocked out before the 5th inning once in his pro career, as he was hit in the leg with a line drive early in his 2012 campaign (He missed no starts, pitching 8 shutout innings in his next appearance).

---Other---

Anderson is a solid defensive pitcher and he has decent speed for his position. He hit .200 with 1 home run and 5 RBI in his 2012 campaign, and hit a home run in his first professional at-bat.

---Personality---

Anderson is a good leader who instantly boosts his team's morale just by walking into the locker room. He has lots of energy to spare and often skateboards with teammates and friends on off days.

I don't think I could handle being a starting pitcher this year. The camera spins around enough to make me dizzy even just as a closer.

So he has a four-seamer, cutter, and a running fastball? Or is the "running" one a two-seamer?

It is a running fastball (equivalent of a SIFB in power pros), not a 2-seamer.

Theo Epstein is no longer the Red Sox gm.

He only said Epstein's name, since in the story, it was during the 2011 draft.

Didn't read the whole post. Assumed that since is was 2013,he would be in the 2012 draft. My bad.

April 8, 2013

My debut game for the 2013 season, and the team's fifth game. The Show Channel put me in their "Prospect Spotlight" for our game against the Reading Fightin' Phils. Matt would be catching for me today as our team looked for its 5th straight win to start the season. I struck out the first batter of the game, Elton Starkey, and retired all 3 batters in the first inning with ease. I did the same in the second including a great catch on a line drive by third baseman Josh Wirth, who hit a single the next inning but we still did not score. I gave up a single down the right-field line to the leadoff batter in the third but snagged a liner off the bat of the #8 hitter for the first out and struck out the next two, including Starkey again. #9 hitter and first baseman Eric Heim hit a homer in the bottom of the 3rd to give us a 2-0 lead. After another perfect inning we scored 3 more runs in the 4th, and I took a 5-0 lead into the 5th inning. I got the leadoff hitter to fly out and then proceeded to strike out the next 5 batters I faced, before giving up a hit to their #2 batter to start the seventh inning. I got the next two batters out but then allowed a single, which turned into a run due to an error by left fielder Darryl Skattum. I looked out and noticed a pitcher starting to warm up in our bullpen, but I got the next batter to strike out on a 94 mph fastball to end the inning. We were held scoreless in the 7th, and I went back out for the 8th inning. Daniel Nava tracked down a long fly ball in center to start the inning, and I struck out the next 2 batters. We scored another run in the 8th to make it 6-1, and to my surprise I stayed in for the 9th despite having thrown 90 pitches. I got the first batter to fly out, then gave up a double. I struck out the next batter and got the next one to ground out, and the game was over. I was named Topps Player of the Game, I learned in the locker room.

STATS: 9 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 16 K (106 pitches, 87 strikes)

I pitched 5 innings in my next outing, allowing 6 earned runs on 11 hits and 1 walk, only striking out 2, against New Britain (we did win 11-10, raising our record to 8-2). [Note: simmed this game]
