I couldn't think of a title.

--

I woke up on Friday and tried as best I could to go about my day as normal even though it was draft day.

I had grown up watching baseball my whole life; I grew up in Chicago and rooted for the Cubs as I was growing up and still do to this day. Guess that tells you something about me, considering that was definitely frustrating at times and I stuck through it. I had no intention in being a bandwagon fan and figured it would pay off one day. Still hasn’t.

Anyway, I woke up, brushed my teeth, and took a shower. I went downtown to eat breakfast. I had just moved into a new city so I didn’t know very many people so I went by myself. No one seemed to talk to me, which I can’t say I didn’t expect. I ordered some French toast and home fries. DELICIOUS

I went back to my house after going to the bank to do bank-ly things. I popped MLB 12: The Show into my PS3 in an attempt to whittle away the hours. I was doing a franchise as, you guessed it, the Cubs, and I wasn’t doing too well. It was August 14, 2014 in the game; my team was lingering around .500 and I had lost the previous game 3-2 against the Marlins. My mind kept wandering away from the game, so I ended up just bagging the idea and went for a run.

That night, I drove up to the MLB draft. I was rumored to be going in the 3rd or 4th round. I am a closer, and where I struggled in break and dominance I more than made up for in control and velocity.

A round had gone by and I hadn’t been selected, as I expected. It was now the 2nd round. The next pick was announced:

“With the 85th pick in the 2012 draft, the Atlanta Braves select Sean Fernandez.”

April 5th – April 15th

It was now April of 2012 – the season was about to start and I was in AA in the closer role in the rotation. In terms of scouting report, I was the third best closer in the organization. I doubt I’ll see much time in the majors for awhile, unfortunately, because of the 23 year old Craig Kimbrel. But, I will try my best to surpass his level – or maybe just wait ‘til he gets traded. You know, whatever works.

Anyway, my team, the Mississippi Braves, got out to a mediocre start, going 0-3 in their first three games. I got no appearances in any of them as they didn’t need the closer, considering they lost the first three games.

However, on April 8, I got called for in the 9th inning. We were playing the Mobile Grizzlies, and we were up 7-4 in the top of the 9th inning and I was being called on to close out the game – you know, like the closer does. I was incredibly nervous, but at the same time was very excited and couldn’t wait to get out there. I had a nice lead; I just hoped that I could keep it.

I was facing the top of the order. The first batter, Luis Barrera, stepped up to the plate. I threw a backdoor slider to begin for a called strike. I ended up striking him out looking on a 2-2 fastball that went down and out. Solid start to my career, I’d say. Somehow after that, I managed to get two more batters to ground out and got a 1-2-3 inning to end the game and net the save. Plus, I got “player of the game” honors. Not too shabby.

A few days later on April 11, I got another chance against the Montgomery Biscuits. We were up 2-1 going into the 9th. I had less margin for error this time…

The first batter hit a single, and I, of course, started sweating profusely and crying silently to myself. The next batter squared to bunt, and hit into a sacrifice. There was now one out and a runner on second… so much as a single could tie it up but I couldn’t worry. The next batter lined out to left field, and there were now two outs. For the five hitter.

I got him to swing through a fastball after throwing a ball to put the count even at 1-1. I then threw another fastball a bit too far outside to make the count 2-1. He then hit a fastball foul, just out of reach of the first baseman. He hit another foul ball off of a poorly placed fastball I threw right down the chute. I then threw yet another fastball, trying to hit the inside corner but missing and putting the count full. He then hit yet another goddamn foul ball. I then threw a *(censored)* slider that was a bit too far inside to walk him. Ugh.

With two outs and two men on, I now had the ginormous six hitter standing before me. I threw a fastball up and he went swinging, and popped it up in foul territory. The third baseman made the catch and I heaved a sigh of relief. I had earned another save.

On the 14th, I got called in to face the Biscuits again. We were up 4-3. The first batter, who was the leadoff hitter in the lineup, lined out hard to second base. The dangerous Charlie Shell then stepped up and hit a ground ball single up the middle off the first fastball I threw. Unfortunately, the next hitter hit another ball up the middle and there were now runners on first and second with one away.

Thankfully, the clean up hitter managed to hit into a double play right to the second baseman. I’ve been cutting it far too close…

After the game, a guy named Rob Skaggs came up to me and asked if I wanted to go and grab dinner with him. The game had started at 4, and we arrived to the restaurant at about 9. Rob turned out to be a really laidback guy. Me and him had the same music taste and we apparently lived rather close by. It was nice to make some friends on the team, and even nicer that he approached me. Human contact is frightening.

Unfortunately the next day I got called in to play again. I was feeling a bit worn out but I went in anyway. We were up 2-0 going into the 9th inning.

Long story short, we ended up losing 3-2. (i.e. I simmed it on accident)

February 8, 2013

I'm going to end it all. Eating thirty pounds of ice cream. The brain freeze might kill me.

Goodbye, cruel world.

Chocolate. Lots of chocolate. Sean Fernandez was 375 pounds at the time of his death.

I applaud you for such a wonderful ending to the log.

That blown save was just too much for Sean eh?

He couldn't take it. The guilt, the team had lost a game.

Horrible. Disgusting. Vile.
