Week of May 27th, 2012

I got a start on Sunday this week. I screwed up my first at-bat, missing a hit and run sign and causing our guy to get thrown at second. Barias was pissed, as was pretty much everyone else in the dugout.

I pulled a rocket to right in my next AB, but it was caught. However, in my next ups, I got a hold of a pitch the other way and belted a two-run shot to left field that extended our lead to 5-0. I received plenty of high fives in the dugout, but in Barias' book, I hadn't made up for my earlier mistake.

I was feeling good when I came up for the fourth time in the game, and with the count at 1-1 I ripped a change-up high down the right field line. I willed it to stay fair, and it did, my second home run of the game! I got a ton more high fives, and Barias told me, "Good hittin', kid." I thanked him and figured he had forgiven me.

In my fifth and final at-bat, with runners on first and second, I got a little ahead of myself. I swung hard and barely made contact, hitting a chopper back to the mound that almost got turned into a double play. Oh well, I thought. Still a good game. We won 12-8.

I was put into left field again for Thursday's series finale against the Tucson Padres, and was given another hit-and-run sign. I did swing this time, but fouled it off and the play was cancelled. I eventually grounded out to third, and fortunately it wasn't turned into a double play.

I trimmed the Padres' lead to 3 with an RBI single in the 5th, but I choked with the bases loaded in the 7th, lining out to end the inning. With the score at 5-4 in the top of the 9th and the tying run on second, I came up against my least favorite type of pitcher; a left-handed submariner. I did my best to focus on his awkward release point, but I struck out on a 2-2 change-up, and the game was over. I didn't get any more playing time after that.

Double update? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Week of June 3rd, 2012

I got a start in left field on Monday against the Round Rock Express.

Hey wait, I thought, Isn't this Ray's team?

I looked around for him, but didn't see him. When the game started, he wasn't at third base. Huh, I thought, maybe he's somewhere else now.

The game soon started, and I struck out in two of my first three at-bats. I felt really out of practice, like it had been a long time since I had played. I reached base in my fourth appearance, though, working a 5-pitch walk.

After the game, I called Ray, whom I hadn't talked to in months.

"Hello?"
"Hey, Ray, it's Colin."
"Hey Colin!
"Aren't you on the Round Rock Express still?"
"...Yeah."
"We played you guys today, but I didn't see you."
"Yeah... I'm back on the DL, Colin."
I was shocked. "Again?"
"Yeah, I got another concussion in April. I've seen the field for just 7 games this year.
"Oh... that's awful."
"I'm thinking of just calling it quits, Colin."
"No! You can't just give up!"
"I've spent more time on the DL than on the field in the last two seasons. I'm 25, and I feel like I'm 40. If I keep this up, I'm going to be an old man in ten years."
"But... but you're so close."
"Colin... I'm not as good as you are. I don't have what it takes to make the majors."
"Y-you can't say something like that! You're in AAA!"
"Colin..."
"What?"
"Good luck in the big leagues."
*click*

I got one more start, on Friday, but my head was somewhat in the clouds as I went hitless with two strikeouts. I then pinch hit on Saturday; I flew out.

Week of June 10th, 2012

I got a pinch hit appearance for the second straight game on Sunday, and took a deep fly ball to right field, but it was caught for an out at the warning track.

I started on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Redhawks. I walked and singled in my first two at-bats, picking up an RBI and a run in our 6-run second inning rout. By the bottom of the fourth it was 11 to 2, but we gave up 5 in the bottom half and then another in the 6th, bringing the Redhawks within 3 runs. With a runner on first in the 7th, I singled to right field after fouling off three straight 0-2 pitches. Nobody scored in the inning, but it felt good to get. I singled again in the 9th, and we won 12-8.

On Friday, we were down 12-0 to the New Orleans Zephyrs when I came in to pinch hit for the pitcher. I singled. Barias seems to be playing the numbers lately, putting me in against lefties due to my .368 average against them, despite my being a lefty.

Saturday's game went on forever, and I spent 17 full innings on the bench before coming in to hit in the top of the 18th. It was 5-5, and I grounded out to second base. We lost in the bottom half of that inning, dropping us to dead last in the PCL American North standings...

Week's Stats
4-7, .571, 0 HR, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Season Stats

Standings
1. Nashville Sounds - 37-26
2. Omaha Storm Chasers - 27-36
3. Memphis Redbirds - 26-37
4. Iowa Cubs - 25-38

Week of June 17th, 2012

I was penciled into left field on Sunday. Batting seventh, I singled in my first at-bat and grounded to short in my second. With the bases loaded and nobody out, I struck out chasing a curveball in my third at-bat, and flew out to center field in my fourth. I got one last shot in the top of the 9th. We were already up 9-4, so I decided to swing aggressively. I gulfed at a couple pitches before taking ball one and grounding to first on the fourth pitch of the at-bat.

I rode the bench on Monday and struck out in a pretty unimportant pinch hit appearance in our 9-1 loss on Tuesday. I was benched again on Wednesday and called home that night.

"Hi, Colin!" my mom answered enthusiastically.
"Hey Mom!" I greeted her, doing my best to sound happy.
"How are you doing?"
"Not bad, I guess. I haven't been playing that well, but I'm doing okay otherwise. I'm at least making a comfortable salary."
There was a pause.
"How's Jeremy?" I asked.
"He's doing great! He's enjoying 7th grade."
Seventh grade... I thought. That kid's getting old.
"Would you like to talk to Dad?"
I thought for a moment.
"No thanks."
"Would you like me to tell him you said hi?"
"No thanks."
There was an awkward pause, and I felt guilty.
"I mean, yeah, sure, go ahead."
"Okay! I will! I love you!"
"Love you too, Mom."
*click*

I started again in left on Thursday but struggled, ultimately going hitless in three at-bats with a strikeout. I didn't play in Friday or Saturday's games, but we won both.

Liam, not all bots are smart enough to tell when a thread is dead. Besides, the bot's post bumps the thread up so everyone will see it anyway.
