Post subject:  Pittsburgh Pirates- OOTP16

A franchise on the rise, the Pittsburgh Pirates are hoping to continue their ascension through the baseball world in the 2015 season. After a 20 season playoff drought, the Pirates finally got to the chance to play in October as a Wild Card in 2013. After beating the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card game, the Pirates fell to the Cardinals in a 3-2 series, missing out on a chance to play in the NLCS. 2014 was a similar year, as the Pirates once again claimed a Wild Card spot. Last season's playoffs were not as kind to Pittsburgh, however, as they lost to the eventual champion San Francisco Giants. Backed by a stellar young outfield and pitching prospects on the rise, this team very well could be a force for years to come.

The team goal for this season is to end the year with a winning record.

Below is a look at the primary lineup, rotation, and bullpen for the Opening Day of the 2015 season, which will be April 6th in Cincinnati.

It was a good opening series on the road for the Pirates, as we nearly swept the Reds. Brandon Phillips hit a walk off homer to break a 3-3 tie in the 9th inning of game three. Through these three games, the lineup has its ups and downs, but the pitching has been very solid in every outing. We'll be in good shape if that continues. We now swing up to Milwaukee for a 3 game weekend series.

League News
April 6: 1B Matt Adams of the Cardinals will be out for "at least a month" after shooting himself in the foot while cleaning his handgun.
April 9: Athletics send C Josh Phegley(45 overall/56 potential) to the Mariners for LF Justin Ruggiano(37/37) and 3B Yordi Calderon(21/23).
- 3B Pablo Sandoval(64/66) is heading back to San Francisco, in exchange for RP Sergio Romo(77/77) and C Aramis Garcia(20/22) from Boston.

It was a rather disappointing series for us in Milwaukee. After a battle to win Game 1, a major let down by Gerrit Cole sunk our ship in Game 2 despite a few impressive offensive performances by Josh Harrison and Neil Walker. Our offense was completely shut down in Game 3, mustering only 2 hits against Mike Fiers. One of those was by our starting pitcher Jeff Locke, who also pitched well despite 7 walks. We now head back to PNC Park for a home stand, starting with 3 games against the Detroit Tigers. We fell in at 20th place in the first power rankings.

League News
April 10: Blue Jays 2B Steve Tolleson(33/33) will miss 4 months with a broken kneecap.
- A heated argument with an umpire left 2B Logan Forsythe(35/37) of the Rays suspended for 3 games.
April 13: Indians CF Michael Bourn(28/28) won the AL Player of the Week award, hitting .545 on the week. Bourn was 12/22 with 0 HR and 3 RBI.
- 1B Yonder Alonso(23/25) of the Padres won the NL Player of the Week award, going 13/24 on the week with a .542 average, 1 HR, 7 RBI, and 4 runs scored.
- A ruptured tendon in the throwing hand of Phillies RP Luis Garcia(36/38) will keep him sidelined for 4 months.

We played Detroit pretty close, but still lost 2 out of 3. We were thankfully able to avoid a sweep thanks to Vance Worley. Josh Harrison is playing well to start the season, hitting .343 with 8 runs scored. We've now got a day off, then another 3 game series against the Brewers at home.

League News
April 15: The Twins dealt SP Kyle Gibson(22/22) to the Braves for LF Eric Young Jr.(46/46) and 3B Dylan Manwaring(20/21).

It was nice to get a bit of revenge on the Brew Crew, taking 2 out of 3 games against them. Gerrit Cole got back on track in game 1, and McCutchen and Marte started to hit the ball a little better, which we needed. You may have noticed that A.J. Burnett only pitched 2 outs of his game 3 start, but it was determined he only had a strained oblique and will thankfully be able to make his next start. We now host the Cubs, in a 4 game series. Their pitching looks pretty good, so hopefully our bats stay hot after putting up 8 against Milwaukee in game 3. We were also bumped up to 15th in this week's power rankings.

League News
April 17: Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista(78/78) will miss the next 2-3 weeks with shoulder soreness.

- White Sox send 1B Adam LaRoche(26/26) to the Mariners for RP James Paxton(60/69).
April 20: RF Kevin Kiermaier(61/68) of the Rays won AL Player of the Week for going 11/27(.407) with 3 homers and 10 ribbies.
- 3B Cody Asche(45/66) of the Phillies took home the NL Player of the Week, hitting .400(10/25) with 4 dingers, 9 RBI, and 5 runs.
- Braves SP Shelby Miller(50/68) will miss the next 4 months with a torn labrum.

We took 3 out of 4 games in a great series against the Cubs, only letting the last game fall through our fingertips after leading 2-1 entering the 9th. Our pitching has been great to start the season, which gives us a chance to win every game. The team as a whole is starting to hit the ball better as well. We now head west to face the 8-7 Diamondbacks in a 3 game weekend series.

We took care of business once again, winning another series, this time on the road. Game 1 was a bit troubling, seeing Burnett get shelled, but Worley and Locke pitched well in games 2 and 3, and the offense came around. A 5 run 9th inning in game 3 sealed the victory. At age 38, Burnett has started the season 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA through 4 starts. He may lose his job if he can't turn his season around. Looking ahead, we end the month of April in Chicago for a 3 game series against the Cubbies. A good showing here could really up us separate ourselves in the division after the first month. We continue to rise through the power rankings, falling in at 7th this week.

League News
April 25: Things got heated in the Subway Series this week, and a massive brawl erupted in the Yankees 11-2 blowout win over the Mets. 3B Alex Rodriguez(58/58) and SP Jon Niese(39/42) were both ejected and then suspended 10 games for starting the incident.
April 27: Rays LF Steven Souza(54/72) was named the AL Player of the Week for batting .444(12/27) with 3 HR and 6 RBI.
- Cubs RF Jorge Soler(29/74) picked up the NL Player of the Week award, hitting .481(13/27) with 3 HR, 7 RBI, and 9 R.

An all around disappointing series in Chicago, and we still have a chance to be swept. We gave up 4 runs in the 8th inning of game 1 to blow that one, and then lost game 2 on a walk-off single. Game 3 was no better, as we couldn't score through 8 innings, but thankfully still have a chance to win. This poor series has dropped us back into a tie for first place.
