Yeah, and the division is shaping up to be really tough this year (in contrast with last year, when we took the pennant with 88 wins). The Giants aren't even in first.

Two Blockbusters, One Day
July 2nd, 2007
Zachary Bluth

In a shocking development, Jorge Posada is no longer a New York Yankee.

The news of the trade came in at about 9:00 this morning that the Yankees had acquired 36-year old relief pitcher Paul Shuey from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for the veteran catcher. It's curious, given two things:

1. Posada, despite his age, has still shown that he can perform at the plate, batting .285 over the last three years, and
2. Shuey has not shown this same ability, spending most of 2007 thus far at AAA and throwing quite poorly there

Considering he's only appeared in 7 games so far this year, perhaps it was Posada himself who demanded the trade; he will likely start over Bengie Molina in Los Angeles.

A lesser but still major trade also occured this morning between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, who exchanged second baseman Adrian Thomas for catcher Crawford Myers. Thomas, 25, is batting .310 with limited power, and Myers, 25, is hitting just .238. For the Phillies, this trade will provide an alternative to the struggling Chase Utley (.225, 3 HR, 78 G) without them having to alter their starting lineup. For the Red Sox, it will provide an insurance policy to the aging-but-still-productive Jason Varitek (35) while expanding the role of 29-year old Marcus Giles (5-12, 4 G).

Colorado Rockies First Half Review
July 9th, 2007
Zachary Bluth

If 2006 was any indication, the Colorado Rockies, what with their young talent and near World Series bid, were in position to compete for the NL West crown for years to come.

The midseason standings tell a different story:

San Francisco Giants - 57-33
Los Angeles Dodgers - 52-34
San Diego Padres - 47-41
Colorado Rockies - 46-41
Arizona Diamondbacks - 39-50

The real headline of 2007 seems to be that California reigns supreme (Even the Anaheim Angels are leading the AL Wild Card), and the Rockies, a respectable 12th best in the Majors with a .529 winning percentage, are a sobering 4th in their division. The Wes Krukow-led Giants (the 24-year old right fielder is slashing .338/.427/.568 with 17 home runs and 12 steals) have returned to dominance and hold onto the MLB's best record, while the Dodgers' Danny McKnight (.332/.417/.580, 21 HR) and Jeff Weaver (10-4, 3.32) have the city of Angels in a frenzy.

Now, all this is certainly not to say that the Rockies have had no role in slipping from first to fourth. The team has been mediocre at best at Cathaway Field (19-22), and while offensive output has been well above average (404 RS[4th], .298[t-2nd], 102 HR[5th], 38 SB[5th]), the team's collective ERA of 3.92, while comparable to last season's 3.87, is 10th in the National League. The pitching rotation of Kennedy (4.06), Francis (3.02), Tsao (3.58), Jennings (3.15), and Brazelton (3.96) has actually been one of the best Colorado has ever seen, but the success of the starters has been overshadowed by the struggling bullpen, whose lone bright spots include Jason Young (23.2 IP, 2.28 ERA, 28 K) and Rick Bauer (34.2 IP, 2.86 ERA, 27 K). While Antonio Osuna (4.18, 19 SV) has not pitched poorly enough to be ousted as the team's closer, his current numbers are his worst since his rookie season in 1995, when he finished the year at a 4.43 mark. Meanwhile, Merkin Valdez, Javier Lopez, and Eddy Rodriguez all failed to remain members of the 25-man roster through the end of June. Another concern is the 22-year old Matt Cain who, despite tremendous numbers in AAA and nothing but praise from scouts at all levels, has struggled with his command and possesses a 6.29 ERA in a mop-up role.

In lighter news, the Rockies continue to hit. Todd Helton is hitting .333 (7th in the NL) with 15 homers, and Joey Acaccia is a shade under .300 with 19 dingers. Matt Holliday has adapted to sitting out against left-handers and is batting .320 with 14 home runs, Dustan Mohr (.329, 9 HR) is playing excellently despite a drop-off in power, Domingo Acosta (.287/.366/.466, 16/18 SB) has been a world-class leadoff man, Bret Nunez (.328/.405/.532) has continued to emerge as one of the league's best young outfielders, J.D. Closser (.260, 10 HR) has played solidly in his first ever starting role, Jorge Piedra (.284/.311/.428) and Mathias MacKenzie (.287/.314/.380) combine for a steady platoon in center, and, of course rookie second baseman Mac Fraser (.303/.344/.471, 8 HR, 8 SB) has taken the league by storm.

In AAA, the Sky Sox are leading their division at 51-40 thanks in large part to shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (.318/.400/.479, 11 HR) and the starting pitching help of infamous AAAA player Michael Morgan (5-1, 1.85 ERA).

The AA Tulsa Drillers finished the first half of their season at .500, but are in first place in the early stages of half number two, standing at 13-5. Some of their success can be contributed to the veteran contributions of players like Michael Tucker and Alfredo Amezaga, but plenty of young talent is to be found on that roster as well, including 1B/DH Tanner Lurie (.309, 15 HR) and 2005 5th-rounder, 1B Brian Jackson (.276, 10 HR).

With a team that looks just as good as last year's, the Rockies are in a position to compete; but, with the Giants holding onto a 9.5 game lead and the Dodgers and Padres in their way, Colorado certainly has their work cut out for them.

I'm sure I've already asked, how is Carter doing for the Giants?

Carter is slashing .311/.405/.525 with 16 homers and 55 RBI. He only had 79 at-bats in 2006, so I believe he's still eligible for Rookie of the Year.

Reeder Demoted, Valdez Recalled
July 15th, 2007
Zachary Bluth

27-year old relief pitcher Greg Reeder has been sent to optional assignment at AAA Colorado Springs.

Reeder, who threw 98.2 innings as a workhorse reliever for the Rockies in 2006, has struggled since his June 23 call-up, pitching his way to an abysmal 13.94 ERA in 10.1 innings. He'll be returning to AAA where, prior to moving to the Majors, he had a 2.97 ERA in 30.1 innings.

Replacing him will be 25-year old Merkin Valdez, the trade piece that came over from San Francisco in exchange for Freddy Guzman last year. He was demoted on June 11th after struggling to a 6.21 ERA in 29.0 innings at the start of the year, but he was excellent in AAA since that time, posting a 0.75 ERA and 9.75 K/9 as the Sky Sox' closer.

Rockies Record: 50-41 (5.5 games back)

Giants Acquire Seanez
July 18th, 2007
Zachary Bluth

At nearly the same time early Wednesday morning, the Giants and Devil Rays and the Orioles and Mets swapped players.

The Giants who, at 58-38, are holding onto a 1.0 game lead in the NL West, traded second baseman Duane Kuiper to the Devil Rays in exchange for outfielder Matt Seanez. Kuiper, 24, has batted .378 through an admittedly small sample size playing behind Quentin O'Connor; along with Ray Durham and former Rockies second baseman Aaron Miles, Kuiper was the smallest third of the three-headed monster of infielders displaced by the up-and-coming Irishman. Seanez, 26, is a toolsy center fielder that scouts have lauded since being drafted out of Toledo University in 2004. However, despite once being hailed as a top prospect, he has mostly played in AAA over the last three seasons, garnering 25 Major League at-bats in 10 games and collecting 4 hits. Still, he has the potential to improve should he shore up his batting eye and fielding ability, and if nothing more he should serve as a valuable pinch runner.

Shortly after this deal was completed, the Baltimore Orioles sent outfielder Jay Gibbons to the Mets, getting shortstop Antonio Perez in return. Gibbons, 30, has spent every year of his 7-year career with Baltimore, hitting .267 with 100 home runs over 886 games. In 2007 he's hitting .263 with 8 homers. He'll be replaced in by the 23-year old Nick Markakis, whose .294 mark (along with his 15 home runs) has convinced Baltimore's front office that he's the right fielder of the future. In New York he joins a crowded outfield that consists of Carlos Beltran, Victor Diaz, Mike Cameron, and Cliff Floyd (though they may be shopping some of their more expensive bats, as the team's 40-53 record has them solidly out of the playoff hunt). Meanwhile, Antonio Perez' position with Baltimore seems equally as uncertain, as Miguel Tejada and Jerry Hairston Jr. currently make up one of the league's best double play tandems.

Cathaway Shores Up Bullpen
July 27th, 2007
Zachary Bluth

Days before the July 31st deadline, Michael Cathaway has acquired Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez in exchange for third base prospect Randy Klann.

Baez, 29, has had experience as a closer in four separate seasons, 2003 with Cleveland and 2004 and 2006-2007 with Tampa Bay. He has 122 career saves and a 4.20 career ERA and is having a fantastic year, collecting 20 saves and posting a career best 2.25 ERA. He has a fastball that touches 94 and a plus curveball which he has used en route to an 11.6 K/9 this season.

The 22-year old Klann was one of the top prospects in the Rockies' system but was being blocked by 27-year old All-Star third baseman Joey Acaccia, who has expressed interest in remaining with Colorado post-2007, and with the Rockies 3.5 games out of a playoff spot, it was time to assess the team's biggest weakness. He will likely make his major league debut with the Devil Rays this season, as reports have indicated he will immediately receive a promotion to the big league club.

Dan Wheeler (22.0 IP, 4.50 ERA) has been optioned to AAA Colorado Springs to make room for Baez, and it looks as though Clint Hurdle and Michael Cathaway have come to a joint agreement to give Baez the closer role for the time being and move Antonio Osuna (24/25 SVO, 5.21 ERA) to middle relief.

July 27th to August 5th
7/27 vs. ARI - W, 5-4 (Cooper Thompson - 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3.66---Mike Stein - Game winning Grand Slam in 8th)
7/28 vs. ARI - L, 9-3
7/29 vs. ARI - W, 4-3 (Dustan Mohr sprains MCL, out 8 days)
7/31 vs. CHC - W, 7-3
8/1 vs. CHC - L, 8-4
8/2 vs. CHC - W, 6-3
8/3 vs. CIN - W, 11-7
8/4 vs. CIN - L, 8-4
8/5 vs. CIN - W, 8-5

Rockies Record: 63-48 (5.5 games back)
