And there it is. The 2014 regular season is officially o(gre)ver.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple things:
The game won't let me show the full stats for the September call-ups, but I think only 1 forum-created player (Tsuchii) is affected by it anyways.
Reminder that the deadline for the draft thingy I said I would do is coming up, it will be Friday at the latest. There's still 2 players left to go. Details are on page 7.
Also, if you want to know how a player around the league did, or if you have any questions about anything relevant to this log, don't be afraid to ask.
Gibbons Resigns
by Bob Elliot, Toronto Sun
Saturday, November 2, 2014
Image
John Gibbons has announced that he will resign from the managerial role of the Blue Jays.
Gibbons' reunion with the team lasted only 2 seasons, as he comes off a 2014 season in which he managed the Jays to an 82-80 record, their first season above .500 in 4 years. Still, it could have been a much better season had the team not faltered down the stretch, going 9-16 in September and missing out on a playoff spot.
Gibbons managed the team from 2004-2008 and 2013-2014, leading the Blue Jays to a +.500 record in 3 (2014, 2007, 2006) of his 5 full seasons as manager. His career managerial record stands at 461-473, good for around a .494 winning percentage. He is known for his fiery attitude, which has resulted in heated conflicts with some players, the most well-known case being his feuds with lefty Ted Lilly and infielder Shea Hillenbrand in 2006.
Gibbons' main reason for resigning is that he "needed a break from the game for a while."
It is also likely that most, if not all, of the Jays' coaching staff will be replaced along with Gibbons, as expected with the departure of a manager. Derek Dorian said that he expects to name the new manager "pretty soon, hopefully." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jays' New Manager Chosen
by Bob Elliot, Toronto Sun
Saturday, November 9, 2014
The Blue Jays have announced their new manager, as Rickey Armas will take over after the resignation of John Gibbons. The team announced that it will be a 2-year deal.
This will be Armas' first role as a Major League coach in any capacity, fitting the theme the Jays have going on at the moment. Armas, 61, bounced around between the minor and independent leagues during his playing career, being notable at the time for playing up until 1998, when he was 45 years young. Armas immediately made the transition from playing to coaching, landing the managerial role for the last team he played for, the Florence Freedom in the independent Frontier League. After leading them to a championship in 2000, he was hired by the San Diego Padres to manage the Lake Elsinore Storm, their new High-A club at the time. After winning a league title in 2001, his first year in the organization, and a division title in 2005, his last, he went over to manage the Marlins' AA and AAA teams until being hired by the Jays.
"Obviously there are concerns about experience, not that that hasn't stopped me before," GM Derek Dorian stated during the official press conference, "but I believe that Armas is a great guy for the job. He's extremely intelligent, both in general and in matters regarding baseball, he knows how to win, and he has a never-say-die attitude that I think will really motivate these young players."
"I think that what will set me apart from other managers is the behind-the-scenes stuff," Armas said. "I have been lauded by previous organizations I've worked with for being able to calm any angry player. I am also well-versed in many languages, so I can also help any foreign player that has been signed feel right at home. I may be an old guy, but make no mistake, I'll be the most youthful one in that clubhouse! I certainly enjoy a loose atmosphere, and I will try to avoid any harmful conflict with players, both mentally and physically."
With the main man signed, the spaces for the rest of the organization's coaching spots should be filled quite soon.
#3 Eury Perez, R/R, 25 years old (75 OVR)
#19 Jose Bautista, R/R, 34 years old (98 OVR)
This season is a very important one for the team, as they could very well have most of the team fall victim to the dreaded sophomore slump. It will be very interesting to see how the team will play under new manager Rickey Armas and a coaching staff composed of first-timers just like him. At least there should be a spike in attendance compared to last year. The Jays' first spring training game is tomorrow against the Yankees.
New additions Hicks, Worth, and Pena are all battling along with Michael Scott, Ryan Goins, and even Kent Murphy for infield spots, one of which was vacated once the team decided not to tender Munenori Kawasaki a contract (he has since signed a minor league deal with the Rockies). All of the aforementioned players have at least 2 options remaining.
Lastly, all of the 2014 draft picks will start the season out in Class-A Dunedin.
