I'm glad, because I've decided that, other than Opening Day and playoff games, I'm going to update entire series rather than individual games.

I'd argue that 0-3 with a strikeout and a walk is notable for a bad *(censored)* like Quentin O'Connor.

Colorado Rockies First Half Review
July 12th, 2006
Zachary Bluth

It seems like no more than 81 days ago that I was typing up a report on the 41-48 2005 Colorado Rockies, assessing the team's performance and expressing optimism for their future. A look at the NL West divison standings sums up this season:

Colorado Rockies - 51-37
San Francisco Giants - 46-40
Arizona Diamondbacks - 46-44
San Diego Padres - 43-44
Los Angeles Dodgers - 42-45

Yes, that's right folks. Your Colorado Rockies are leading the pack, beating out last year's division champion Giants and all others to sit atop the division throne by a solid four games. Now, it's certainly best not to get cocky, as there's still plenty of baseball left to be played, but Rockies fans definitely have a lot to be happy about through 88 games.

The most notable improvement for Colorado is their pitching. A team ERA of 3.77 is greatly improved over last year's final of 4.34, and is good for a solid 8th place in the National League, despite the mile high city providing a boost to hitters. The starting rotation of Joe Kennedy (8-3, 3.55), Jeff Francis (5-5, 3.63), Dewon Brazelton (8-3, 3.22), Jason Jennings (8-5, 3.44), and Chin-Hui Tsao (6-5, 4.06) has consistently provided the Rockies with a chance to win every game. The bullpen, while a bit shaky at times, is lead by the efforts of closer Antonio Osuna, who has saved 24 of 26 opportunities, and set-up man Rick Bauer, who has a stellar 0.79 ERA. Justin Germano, the team's designated 7th-inning guy, has been solid (3.77 ERA), but the Rockies may be looking two acquire a reliever or two as we head into the latter half of July.

And of course, from a hitting standpoint, things have been wonderful. As a team, the Rockies are 3rd in the Majors with a .294 average, and 1st in the league with 121 home runs. The obvious star of the lineup is Todd Helton, who is hitting .338 and has hit an MLB-leading 27 homers. Joey Acaccia's hard work over the offseason has shown, as his average stands at .339 and his home run total at 17. Left fielder Matt Holliday (.293, 18 HR) has been his usual self, and right fielder Dustan Mohr (.298, 17 HR) has shown that his 2005 performance was not a fluke. Catchers J.D. Closser (43 G, .342, 4 HR) and Doug Mirabelli (67 G, .279, 6 HR) have complemented one another well in their platoon, as have outfielders Bret Nunez (40 G, .309/.389/.445) and Jorge Piedra (68 G, .302, 10 HR). Rounding out the lineup is the middle infield; All-Star shortstop Domingo Acosta (.302/.396/.505, 10 SB) and second baseman Aaron Miles (.277/.315/.409) have played well both offensively and defensively. Providing production off the bench are backup third baseman Chris McMahon (.227/.278/.348), first baseman and pinch hitter Marcus Davis (.267/.281/.400), and outfielder/pinch runner Freddy Guzman (6 for 24, 4 SB, 1 CS).

In AAA, where the Colorado Springs Sky Sox stand at 50-43, standout players include starting pitchers Matt Cain (3-5, 2.39) and Tim Roy (9-5, 2.98), relievers Dan Wheeler, Jason Young, Chuck Keisler and Case Royal, 24-year old left fielder Mathias MacKenziewithdotsoverit (.312, 8 HR, 5 SB), and 22-year old first baseman Pete Grossman (.281, 9 HR). 21-year old second baseman Mac Fraser has not fared particularly well against AAA pitching (.254/.298/.359), but his defense has been phenomenal as usual.

The AA Tulsa Drillers won their first half with a record of 40-30 and are already 14-6 in the second half. Among the prospects to watch are starting pitcher Julian Monette (7-4, 2.01), 2005 draftee Corey LeCroy (26 SV, 1.86 ERA), and first baseman Trevor Lyons (.311/.343/.548).

In the second half, the Rockies have 43 home games and just 31 road games left, while they're also without a single game against the 2nd place Giants. With any luck, the Rockies should continue their play and cruise into a playoff spot.

Big Trades
July 25th, 2006

Two major trades have occurred today, both of them involving an NL Central team:

Philadelphia Phillies send left fielder Pat Burrell (.306, 9 HR, 44 RBI) to Milwaukee in exchange for Lyle Overbay (.245, 11 HR, 31 RBI)
New York Yankees send 24-year old catcher Phil Johnson to Chicago in exhange for veteran first baseman Derrek Lee (.291, 17 HR, 47 RBI)

The Phillies (53-46, 3.0 GB in NL East) seem to be trying to make a playoff push, but it's unclear why the Brewers (40-59) are picking up a left fielder when they already have Carlos Lee and are all but out of contention anyway. Meanwhile, the Chicago deal is also puzzling, as Johnson is a largely unproven hitter and Derrek Lee has been a major factor in propelling the Cubs to their 56-42 record. Experts everywhere agree that the Yankees got the better end of that deal.

Game Two

Rockies Trade Guzman
July 25th, 2006
Zachary Bluth

Following the absolute implosion of the Rockies bullpen in today's loss to the Dodgers, Michael Cathaway executed a deal with the San Francisco Giants, giving up outfielder Freddy Guzman (9-33, 13 pinch running appearances, 9 R, 6 SB) in exchange for 24-year old relief pitcher Merkin Valdez (67.0 IP, 4.03 ERA). The deal displaces the 28-year old Scott Dohmann (61.2 IP, 5.25 ERA), who will be relegated to AAA Colorado Springs. Meanwhile, to fill the void left by Guzman as the team's 5th outfielder, Mathias MacKenzie (.326, 9 HR, 7 SB in AAA) has been promoted.

Valdez will serve as the team's second set-up guy, while Justin Germano (32.2 IP, 4.68 ERA) will be used in middle relief.

Tsao Drilled, Out Indefinitely
July 29th, 2006
Zachary Bluth

In a truly scary moment at Miller Park, Chin-Hui Tsao was nailed in the head by a line drive off the bat of Carlos Lee in the 4th inning of today's game. Tsao was down for about ten minutes and was eventually carted off the field, unable to leave under his own power.

Team trainers have announced the Tsao has suffered a severe concussion and the 25-year old pitcher has been placed on the 60-day DL. Tsao was in the midst of the best season of his young career, pitching his way to a 3.86 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 107.1 innings. Estimates place his earliest possible return at late September, but he may not be back in time for playoffs.

For the time being, Michael Morgan (25.2 IP, 5.26 ERA) will be the team's 5th starter and 21-year old Matt Cain (4-7, 2.55 ERA in AAA) has been called up from to pitch in long relief. However, Cathaway will undoubtedly be shopping around for another option before Monday's 6:00 trade deadline.

July 30th to August 2nd
7/30 @ MIL - W, 12-1
7/31 @ CHC - L, 5-4
8/1 @ CHC - W, 8-0
8/2 @ CHC - W, 8-3

Rockies Record: 62-47 (4.0 games up)

that kid Ryan Howard might be blocked. Wonder who's patrolling LF for the Phillies now.

Yeah, that was a really poor trade in my opinion, you'd just be downgrading from Burrell to Overpaid.

That trade was completely baffling. The Phils now have a huge hole in left field were some 24-year old scrub is playing. Meanwhile, Jim Thome is starting while the newly acquired Lyle Overbay and the up-and-coming Ryan Howard ride the bench as the backup and 3rd string first basemen. It made only slightly more sense for Milwaukee, who at least have a young Prince Fielder to play first, but they now have two above average left fielders in Burrell and Carlos Lee. In addition, they also have a 21-year old left fielder named Jamie de la Rosa who's batting .276.
