Cain Optioned to AAA

Following the club's 8-5 win over the Mets, 21-year old pitcher Matt Cain was optioned to AAA.

Cain, widely regarded as a top prospect, has struggled in his first month as a big leaguer, walking 15 en route to a 7.45 ERA in just 9.2 innings. The final straw was apparently when he walked five in 0.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and nearly allowing the Mets to come back from what was an 8-1 deficit.

To replace Cain in the long relief role, Michael Cathaway has called up the 23-year old Michael-Sea Morgan, who was mediocre in the bullpen last year; however, in April, he picked up the organization's AAA pitcher of the month award, going 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA and striking out 25 in 23.2 innings. Hopefully, that success will carry over to the majors.

Brazelton Injures Leg
May 20th, 2006

25-year old pitcher Dewon Brazelton is out with a sprained MCL, team trainer Logan Evans reports. He was placed on the 15-day DL while Michael-Sea Morgan will take his spot in the rotation. Meanwhile, the Rockies have purchased the contract of 21-year old Matt Cain from AAA Colorado Springs.

Cain struggled in 9.2 innings of big-league work earlier in the year, but posted a 3.43 ERA in 4 AAA starts. He'll serve in the long relief role that was Morgan's until Brazelton is able to return.
