Good news is that Martinez has 46 homers! Too bad about that trip, though.

Pregame Notes: We FINALLY go back home, where we face the BayStars. Blanco takes the hill, he'll be going up against fellow lefty Shogo Yamamoto. We've faced him twice this season, and we managed to hit him well both times. I expect nothing but positive results this time around.

Postgame Notes - Great start to the series, and a nice way to bounce back.

We got off to a great start as soon as we got our turn to bat, as back-to-back doubles by Collins and Henderson gave us a quick lead in the bottom of the first. In the next inning, Collins made it a 4-run lead by launching a 3-run shot to right-center, his 8th home run of the season. He would have a great day, only finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

We would pile on a bit more in the 3rd, thanks to a solo homer by James, his 9th.

The scoring stopped until the 6th inning, where Adam Henderson led off the inning with his 18th homer of the year. In the same inning, Efren Martinez hit his league-leading 47th homer, also of the solo variety, to center field. We would score one more in the inning to make it an 8-0 game. In the 7th, pinch-hitter Hans Gruber hit his first homer of the year, a moonshot off of a hanging curveball. It was estimated to have travelled 430 feet.

Blanco pitched 7 shutout innings en route to his 11th win of the season. He's really emerged as one of the most reliable pitchers in the league.

James Robinson finished the game off by pitching 2 scoreless innings.

One thing that jumped out at me was our improved patience as a team at the plate. Not only did we draw 6 walks, but we also took advantage of the pitchers' mistakes. This is a great attribute to see in such young players.

Pregame Notes: Wally Burton looks to maintain his perfect record today, as he goes up against veteran Daisuke Miura. We faced Miura once before and while he did receive the loss, didn't do too terribly against us. I have full faith in Burton to outduel him.

Postgame Notes - Another win, we're in great position to get the sweep.

The Baystars surprisingly scored the first runs of the game in the top of the 2nd, thanks to a double by left fielder Yuki Yoshimura that drove in Murata and Harper. Catcher Shingo Takeyama followed that up by driving him in with a bloop single.

However, instead of panicking, we made sure the lead would not last, and sure enough, in the bottom of that very inning, it didn't. Daniel Sarfate drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double, and Adam Henderson tied the game up with a triple that drove in Sarfate and Burton. Arthur Collins proceeded to give us the lead with an RBI single.

Burton ran into trouble again in the third, and found himself in a bases-loaded situation with 0 outs, and slugger Brett Harper up at the plate. How would he get out of this one? Well, I'll tell you.

A.

TRIPLE.

PLAY.

Yup, that's right, a triple play. How did it happen? Well, Harper hit a hard grounder to Walter James at second. James tagged the runner on first, fired home, where Mason made the tag for the out, then Mason threw Harper out at first to complete the triple play. It was magnificent defensive work, to say the least.

Both teams would not score until the bottom of the 6th, where Daniel Sarfate would hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Alex Weiss. Ethan Mason followed that up with an RBI double, scoring Sarfate.

Those runs would be extremely important because in the following inning, Terrmel Sledge hit a 2-run homer to bring the deficit down to 1. I yanked Burton after the homer, something I should have done after the guy before Sledge got on.

Thankfully, we have a guy named Efren Martinez who can easily widen those deficits with one swing of the bat. And so he did, going opposite-field for his 48th homer on the year.

Johnny Swagger closed the game out despite facing a few setbacks along the way. It's his 23rd save on the year.

2 things came to my attention after the game: 1) I was selected as an assistant coach for the upcoming All-Star game. I was very honored, it looks like I'll be putting that game down here in this journal. 2) Greene told me he'll be signing a new pitcher very soon. He added that the pitcher, despite most likely being older than most of our guys, will likely start out on the secondary squad.

Player(s) of the Game: Image <- William Chance and Ethan Mason

Postgame Notes - An easy win, thus giving us the easy sweep.

Ethan Mason kicked off the scoring in the 2nd with a 3-run shot to center field, his 15th. I'm surprised he's shown so much home run pop, I always figured him to be a gap hitter.

Speaking of guys with surprising power, Adam Henderson led off the 3rd inning with his 19th homer of the season. We tacked on one more in the inning thanks to an RBI double by James.

Not much of note happened afterwards, except for Chance giving up a homer to Terrmel Sledge and Henderson recording his 60th RBI on the season with a double. Despite giving up the homer, Chance dominated the BayStars lineup.

The Beef lost today, they dropped 2 of 3 in their series with the Tigers, so we moved up 2 games from the beginning of the series to now. We currently stand at 2.5 games behind them.

No long recaps until the All-Star Game (which is basically after this next series)!

June 22-24, 2011

Hopefully we make the most of our last series before the All-Star Break.

Game 1

Nagoya Aliens 4 - Hanshin Tigers 3
W - Bryan Wade (3-0)
L - Kyuji Fujikawa (3-4)
HR - Efren Martinez (49)

Game 2

Nagoya Aliens 10 - Hanshin Tigers 1
W - Zheng Ma (11-4)
L - Atsushi Nohmi (3-12)
HR - Efren Martinez (50, 51)

Game 3

Nagoya Aliens 4 - Hanshin Tigers 0
W - Andrew Nelson (10-6)
L - Jason Standridge (4-7)
HR - Efren Martinez (52)
Alex Weiss (8)

After the sweep, we are now just 1.5 games behind the Beef. Let's hope we can seize the lead soon and never look back.

June 26, 2011

It's time for the All-Star Game! Here's the Central League roster:

Lineup
1: Adam Henderson, CF, Aliens
2: Takeshi Ohnuma, RF, Beef
3: Jun Hisamoto, DH, Beef
4: Efren Martinez, 1B, Aliens
5: Takahiro Imanami, C, Beef
6: Terrmel Sledge, LF, BayStars
7: Alex Weiss, 3B, Aliens
8: Walter James, 2B, Aliens
9: Hayato Sakamoto, SS, Giants

Pitchers
SP1: Toshihiro Maru, Beef
SP2: Christian Tanaka, Beef
SP3: Maximo Nelson, Dragons
SP4: Zheng Ma, Aliens
RP: James Robinson, Aliens
RP: Ricardo Diaz, Aliens
RP: Shun Yamaguchi, BayStars
RP: Dennis Sarfate, Carp
RP: Takuya Asao, Dragons
RP: Yuya Kubo, Giants
RP: Tetsuya Yamaguchi, Giants
RP: Chang-Yong Lim, Swallows

Bench
C: Ethan Mason, Aliens
1B: Josh Whitesell, Swallows
2B: Shinji Morino, Beef
3B: Kenji Saeki, Beef
SS: Norihiro Takaguchi, Beef
SS: Rolman Perez, Aliens
OF: Ichiban Nakamura, Beef

The Pacific League roster doesn't interest me, except for the omission of Yu Darvish. However, he was injured for a substantial part of the season, and that's probably definitely the reason he didn't make it.
