December 25, 2010 It was Christmas today, which means that 1. I will be celebrating the holiday with my family. 2. Finally get around to calling my eldest daughter and tell her where we moved to and wish her a Merry Christmas. and 3. Meet up with Preston at the Aliens' home field. I did numbers 1 and 2 on the list in the early morning, after watching the gorgeous Japan sunrise. I went to go do number 3 around 1:45 PM. I waited about 15 minutes before Preston arrived. This was the first time I met him in person, and he looked somewhat differently than I expected. For one, he bore a striking resemblance to actor Denzel Washington. But I digress. He walked up to me and gave me a tour around the stadium and clubhouse, telling me about the Central League opponents that we'll be facing", before finally giving me the sheet of paper that had the Aliens' roster on it. The roster looked a bit different than the ones you see on mlb.com. It went as such: Main Squad Hitters Position Name (2nd Position), Age, B/T, Skills (Agent) C Ethan Mason (SS, 2B) 18, R/R, 3EECEED (AgentP) Rex Morgan, 18, R/R, 2EEBAFE 1B Efren Martinez (OF), 18, L/L, 4EAEADD (SkittleMonster) John Simpson, 18, R/R, 3EBDDEE 2B Walter James, 18, R/R, 3DCBAAB (MrLiamcar) Hans Gruber, 18, R/R, 2CDEEDA 3B Alex Weiss, 18, R/R, 3CCCSCB (BrewersFuzz) Erick Robertson, 34, R/R, 1FFFFFE (dishnetkid) SS Rolman Perez, 18, S/L, 3DADDAC (BrewersFuzz) Justin Emerson, 18, L/R, 1EBECEB OF Adam Henderson, 18, R/R, 3DCSCBD (detroittigers15) Arthur Collins, 18, R/R, 2BCDDCD Daniel Sarfate, 18, R/R, 4CCBDDD Lee-Sook Cho, 18, L/L, 3DDAEDD Pedro Gomez, 18, R/L, 2DBDEEF Gregor Lopez, 18, R/R, 2GEDDEE Main Squad Pitchers Name, Age, B/T, Skills, Breaking Pitches SP Zheng Ma, 18, R/R, 150 B B, Level 2 Slurve, Level 5 Forkball Andrew Nelson, 18, L/L, 151 C C, Level 1 Slow Curve, Level 7 Splitter (detroittigers15) Alberto Blanco, 18, L/L, 148 D A, Level 4 Slider, Level 3 Curveball Wally Burton, 18, R/R, 148 B A, Level 2 Slider, Level 3 Curveball Geoff Taylor, 18, L/R, 140 B B, Level 3 Knuckle-Curve, Level 2 Original Sinker (dishnetkid) Shin-Ming Chen, 18, L/L, 130 S C, Level 3 Hard Shuuto, Level 1 Curveball (AgentP) RP James Robinson, 18, S/R, 146 C E, Level 4 Slurve, Level 1 Splitter (PPFan31) Bryan Wade, 18, R/R, 151 D D, 2-Seam Fastball, Level 3 Slider, Level 3 12-6 Curve Max Jones, 18, R/R, 145 D D, Level 2 Slider, Level 3 Forkball Ricardo Diaz, 33, R/R, 151 D E, Level 2 Original Slider, Level 5 Curveball Cristobal Rodriguez, 18, S/R, 148 E E, Level 4 12-6 Curve, Level 7 Forkball Johnny Swagger, 18, S/R, 166 E E, Level 2 12-6 Curve, Level 2 Vertical Slider (PPFan31) Note: You'll learn about the minor leaguers once I promote them, whenever that may be. I had a lot of questions in my head, and Preston knew it and did his best to answer them. He said that that his skills rankings were "a revolutionary scouting mechanism" that "would change the way scouts and GMs think." He went on to say that the skills were based off of a 0-100 scale, with 100 being amazing at that skill. He then lumped those numbers into letter grades, with it going like: G: 0-29; F: 30-39; E: 40-49; D: 50-59; C: 60-69; B: 70-79; A: 80-99; S: 100 After that, he told me that the skills for batters went in this order: Trajectory (how high the batter usually hits the ball), Contact, Power, Speed, Arm Strength, Fielding, and Error Resistance. For pitchers, it was like this: Top Speed (in terms of km/h), Control, and Stamina. Breaking Balls were listed on a scale of 1-7, with 7 having the most break. "Do you understand it a bit more?" Greene told me, in a somewhat snarky tone, as if I was SUPPOSED to know this already. I let it go and replied with "Why yes, I believe I do. I've just got two more questions. One, why the hell do we have a lefty-throwing shortstop? And 2, who is this Johnny Swagger kid?" "Well," he said, "when I was negotiating with him in Venezuela, I tried to get him to convert to the outfield. He wouldn't have it, and I didn't want to miss his talent. So I caved in. Sue me." "As for Mr. Swagger, well, I'll let you see for yourself what he's like. Anyways, I've got to go to a meeting now." "Alright," I said, "I think I have everything I need anyways. See you later." As Greene was walking up the stadium steps, he turned around. "One more thing," he yelled. "The Japanese media is in the team clubhouse right now. They're expecting an interview from you. Go get 'em!" Ugh..... |

December 25, 2010 I was told to wear my uniform to the interview. It was hanging up in my new office, with the #50 that I wore during my playing days. I then walked out of the office into the clubhouse after mentally preparing myself. I was first greeted by my translator, Makoto Matsumoto. He was a very cheerful person, he really looked forward to working with me. I felt the same way. Once the media saw me, I could hear their eyes just light up. Yup, that's right, I HEARD them. It didn't bother me as I sat in my chair with the cameras on my face. The interview was like a blur to me, and I couldn't remember a lot of the questions afterwards. Luckily, Makoto transcribed the interview for me, which I read. It went as such: Q: How do you feel about managing such a young team, with all but 2 players being teenagers? A: I like to think that I can make a very good impression on these young players. I also look forward to maturing as a manager while they mature as players. Diaz and Robertson should be nice mentors to these guys as well. Q: Do you think your team will receive a lot of support even though you have no Japanese players? A: This is probably a better question for our GM, but I certainly think the Nagoya public will be intrigued by these non-Japanese born players. They've also got enough talent to keep the fans coming to our games. Q: How do you think your team will fare in their first year? A: They'll make the playoffs. No doubt about it. Q: Which team do you think is the team you need to watch out for in the Central League? A: I'd say the Beef. They have a very high-powered offense, probably the best in the NPB. This is the last question I'll be taking, everyone. Q: What do you think of your guys' uniforms? A: They're...better than most in this league, I can tell you that. But obviously, uniforms are the least of my concerns. After looking over it, I don't see an answer I regret. If I came off as overconfident, so be it. I then proceeded to set up the things in my office, which took about an hour. Afterwards, Greene walked into my office and said to me: "Hey Huitt, I watched your interview. You handled it very well, especially since I told you on such short notice. Good to see a manager with some confidence." I thanked him, which is when he told me, "So, listen, you'll be meeting the players and handing out their jerseys for the first time on January 25, a month from now. I suggest coming up with some sort of lineup and pitching strategy in the meantime." I proceeded to go back to my office and do just that. |

1. I never said there wouldn't be agents. 2. I'd rather you guys pick after Huitt gives out the uniforms. Their personalities will be clearer after then. |
