I'm just curious - what's the point of hobbies, friends, cars, wives, etc? I've played half a season so far and as of yet they really haven't helped me much.

Hobbies seem like a waste of a week to me.

They become useful once you level the skill up enough. You can learn hard to get abilities like throwing 4 and rally hitter from fishing and the rpg video game respectively. Of course you also get stat increases just as mike94100 said. I haven't found a use for music or chess yet but I'm sure they do something.

music raises culture, which I believe allows you to read some of the more advanced books

But do any CDs offer any ability gains or boosts? I raised my culture to A just from reading books and most of those offer direct ability gains.

oh really i was unaware of that...

other than raising culture, i havent had anything else raise when listening to music, althought he game says it has various effects.... but then again i havent spent too much time with listening to music so i havent seen anythign raise other than culture.

perhaps there is a chance something else gets raised depending on what cd you listen to, similar to the stats raising dependant on what games are played on the console?
