February 18, 2008 I spent the winter engrossed in a mystery novel that I still haven't finished. On thanksgiving, I gave out baseball equipment to kids who needed it. Maybe I'll face them in the big leagues some day. I played Santa at the mall one day near Christmas, and that was fun. Now it's time for spring training. I'm continuing to focus on my control, as I have a lot of room for growth there, and if I want to be the relief ace of this team, they need to know I can place the ball where I want, when I want. I met a personal trainer today. Apparently all he does is give massages. Sounds good, I guess. |

March 1, 2009 It felt great to get back on the field and compete today. I pitched 3.1 perfect innings, striking out 7 batters. Although they seemed a bit rusty, swinging at pitches way out of the strike zone. |

March 3rd, 2009 Dusty Baker addressed the team today. "Men," he began, "While I was having a cappuccino with Carlos Santana last week, we got to talking about what makes a team great. I had mentioned "Nobody to Depend On" as a great song by the original Santana band, and he told me how that's the antithesis of a good team. "On a great team", he said, "everyone can be depended on. Everyone." |

April 1, 2009 On the eve of Opening Day I spent my off day working out. As I was leaving the team practice facility, I was greeted by a middle aged man in a suit. He wore glasses that reminded me of my principal from my elementary school. He introduced himself as Michael Woods, and handed me a buisiness card that read: Michael Woods Agent of All Stars. Looks like Matthew just got some competition |

April 2, 2009 Clayton Kershaw has his way with us today, pitching 8 perfect innings--and shockingly being lifted in the 9th. Nonetheless, it was a combined perfect game and we struck out 23 times in 27 at bats. I threw four scoreless innings of relief in the loss. |

April 14, 2009 Philadelphia, PA Last night I was called on to face Victorino in the 8th, with a runner at third and two out. Recalling how hard he hit me last year, I decided that he would find a way to get a hit if I pitched to contact and this would have to be a strikeout. Working the lower strike zone to a 1-2 count, I brought high heat and he couldn't catch up. In my 8 appearances this year, I've got a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched, with one win and one save. That evening I took Zimmerman out to dinner after the game. We talked about how good this team can be, and how awesome it would be to make the postseason. Dreaming big. Feels good. This morning I played a round of golf with Denard Span, who shot a nice 73, but I had a 68! |

April 23, 2009 Miami, FL I pitched a scoreless inning last night, getting Han-Ram and Uggla out on strikes. After the game, I asked the store clerk, Emily out to see a movie. But she turned me down. Today I took Zimmerman out to the links. I shot a 76 to his 82. Stats for Lancasters last 5 appearances: 1.17 ERA, 7.2 IP, 1 loss Season Stats: 1.29 ERA, 13 games, 28 IP, 1 W, 1L, 2 Sv, 23 K, 1 HR, .146 BAA |

May 5, 2009. San Francisco CA I was a disaster today. Skip brought me in to put out a fire and instead I poured gasoline on it. With two on and two out, McCovey muscled a single up the middle for a run, then Marlon Byrd hit a two strike pitch way up into the bleachers. 4 runs allowed with two outs. I needed a tall cold one after that. Instead, I went to a charity event I'd been invited to earlier that day. I met a lady named Anna. She was nice, although her style was kind of odd. Pink hair? |

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 Los Angeles, CA I ended June with the worst back to back performances of my career. On Monday, I entered a scoreless game and promptly gave up two base hits followed by a 3 run homer to Justin Turner on a fastball, and we lost 3-0. Tuesday, we lost 3-0 again, and I gave up all 3 runs on a homer, Again. I'm really in Dusty Baker's doghouse now. Walking by his office after the game, I took a look at his "Chart of Trust", and I was only worthy of 4 out of 5 stars. Time to get down to business in the second half. Season Stats 42 games, 76.1 IP, 2.83 ERA, 3 W, 4 L, 3 Sv, 66 K's, 9 HR, .226 BAA |

July 6, 2009 It's trade season. And some blockbusters have gone down. Yesterday, in a head scratcher, SF traded Crawford to PHI for Werth. Today the Mets traded Syndergard to the Blue Jays for Tony Fernandez. And right before that, we had acquired Youklis from Boston for Pedro Alvarez, whom we had signed as a free agent and then left in AAA all year. We could use Youk on the big league club. We are hitting a dismal .203 as a team. |
